The strap and lock actually look ok and match the other ones in that small cluster of styles . The serial number font isn't right, styles 5356, 57 and 58 are very similar and there may have been some confusion, but in my very small set of photos they all have the same old-fashioned Times New Roman-type font in the serial number. It's possible that they were using a temporary stamp in the questionable case since the month code is 3 months earlier than the examples in my files.

Here are thumbnails of the one in my files - style 5358, Hamilton Portfolio

It MIGHT be OK. I wouldn't buy it but I wouldn't report it either.
Please clarify about the strap. Did Coach make straps with rivets near the clasps at this time? All the examples I've seen are sewn straps like we normally see.

Correction - SOME of the Sheridans had riveted ends. These are from the same period.

Those 3 styles DID have that strap with riveted ends, here's a 5357 I've never found a name for:

Here's the 5356 Candidate:

This one has a sewn strap: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Co...h=item1a3b62f9b5:g:YscAAOSwCQtZ0Vzb:rk:1:pf:0 Either it was changed or some were sold with this type. The other two currently on ebay have the riveted strap. I don't know how I missed that.

That's probably not the original strap. The shoulder pad is a different design and the leather isn't completely dyed through. I don't remember seeing that type of shoulder pad on Coach briefcases from that time period. The black color is only on one surface, check out the last photo. The strap also has a dog-leash clip.

The metal red Heart charm was added by the owner. It's some kind of Hamptons Herringbone Hobo style. The year code 2004 is the year of release.

Well that explains why I can't find a Hamptons bag with a heart charm, thanks!

Do you happen to know if the heart charm was standard on a different bag, or was it a special purchase? Or maybe it came off of another fob?

Thanks!

It came on something else. There was a heart keychain. It really looks like the bottom charm. I don't have any pictures of a purse or wristlet with the heart. There was a wristlet with a similar star so there might have been one on a wristlet.View attachment 4303714
Actually, I owned a bag and wristlet from this Herringbone line when they first came out (yes, I feel old now), and the heart came with the bags.

I owned the pink "satchel" bag (#1409) and matching wristlet, both of which had the hearts on the hangtags when I purchased them. I thought it may have just been that satchel, but found the pink version of the black hobo you posted and that also had the heart. I sold them a few years back in a big purge of my collection, but I clearly remembered the hearts and had major flashbacks in reading this thread! Just thought I'd chime in

These are not my images but the first 2 are the satchel i had, and the 3rd is the wristlet. The last one is the pink hobo. These had pink hearts while it looks like the black ones had red hearts to go with the red leather.

Thanks for the correction and the photos, I hope you don't mind if I keep copies for my files? Those are really cute bags.

Absolutely! The bag was so cute... but the light pink suede (on the corners, of all places!) was just too hard to take care of. Between that and the vachetta leather on the handles I feel like I only carried it a few times ;)
The early 2000s were such a different time for bags... glad to see some of them making the rounds here, though!

Both are genuine and from the early to mid-1980s. The first is a Stewardess style 9525, the second looks like a style 9170 which was called a Classic Shoulder Bag during most of that time period.

Thanks so much for the information and pictures, I will definitely leave the heart fob on the bag when I rehab it! :hugs:

Do you recall when the line was released? The bag has a 2004 manufacture date but I can't find the herringbone bags on the wayback machine.

ETA: I still haven't found it on Wayback but I see that similar heart fobs were featured before Valentine's Day 2005.
