Hello everyone! I need help authenticating a bag. It was an impulsive purchase and wasn’t expensive but I’m concerned it’s not authentic. I googled the serial number and the same bag didn’t come in the images tab and the inside lining kind of set off a red flag as well as I noticed there’s some over lapping in the bags design.
Here’s the link and I have attached photos

It's fake. I hope you can get your money back.

The reason that you got a different photo when you searched for the number is because that style number -5659 has been used in literally THOUSANDS of fakes, and the genuine one looks like this and only this - click on the thumbnail to enlarge it:
5659_Scribble Mini Tote_March2005.jpg

If you searched Google or this Coach forum for "Coach 5659" you would have seen numerous posts about that fake number along with photos of the genuine bag.

Impulse buying is never safe especially if you're not familiar with commonly used fake numbers and the classic red flags indicating a fake Coach, like the shiny gold mini-C lining in the bag you bought and that Coach NEVER used in any genuine bag. There are other problems with it too but that's the most obvious. If you don't have that kind of knowledge or experience, don't buy. And never buy from any source such as garage sales, estate auctions, Craigslist sellers, etc, who don't allow you to return the item for a full refund if it turns out to be fake.

There's also an older but still useful list of some of the most commonly used fake Coach serial numbers posted at Ebay's UK site that's referred to as the Daria48 Fake Numbers list:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/gds/Fake-Coach-Serial-Numbers-NT-4903-and-more-/10000000002744619/g.html
Daria's list states:
"The counterfeiters also use many legitimate-looking style numbers (the 2nd half of the serial number) in the serial numbers but on the wrong style bags or accessories - THESE HAVE BEEN USED IN THOUSANDS OF FAKES:
-5659 which should only be on a Scribble Tote, about 11x7 with bright multicolor Cs

-6094 which should only be on a small Signature Demi, and

-1417 which should only be on an East-West Leather duffle. These three numbers are special favorites with counterfeiters and have appeared on thousands of fakes."

I also posted a similar list with Daria48's permission here at tPF a few years ago, here are the links and updates:

Selling any counterfeit item in the US is a felony. The seller owes you a full refund.

And welcome to tPF, I hope you'll start to use the resources of this site so you don't risk losing your money again. Good luck with your refund.

Thank you! I really do appreciate it and will be more cautious in the future. I’ll be contacting the seller and letting them know.

Just a little more ammunition in case the seller gives you a hard time and the always-fake lining and known often-faked serial number isn't enough - the C pattern on standard Signature pattern Coaches isn't correctly centered. The right and left halves of at least the front of the bag should be mirror images of each other.

And if you look at the creed statement very carefully, the last sentence has a spelling mistake only found in fakes - it reads "enOuring quality" with an "o" instead of "enDuring" with a "d".

That's FOUR major red flags, any one of which would be more than enough to prove the bag a fake. Lining, serial number, fabric pattern and spelling mistake.

Oh dear, I'm afraid I have fallen for a fake. I just wanted to acquire a relatively inexpensive bag to practice rehabbing on, but this just arrived and it looks awful. I would like to add that since purchasing I have read more (quite a bit more!) and now know the dangers of Poshmark. Live and learn - now that I know better, I'll do better! I do believe this is fake, it just arrived today so I have 3 days to report the inauthentic item.

Item: Tan cowhide coach cross body
Listing number: Not sure where to find this on Poshmark
Seller: ravenelld

Comments: It is now in my possession and I have tried to take a better picture of the creed. I've also included a picture of some wonky stitching.

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Purchased at local consignment store at a price worth the risk. Looks great but something feels off and I can't let it go. Maybe it's the lack of a turnlock that gives me doubt. Thanks in advance!

Yes, it's fake. I hope poshmark doesn't give problems in returning. Their authenticators aren't the best.

If you need specifics, it has the wrong style number for the style. The font of the creed is wrong. The 'o' in No. is too big and the underline is too long.

In my opinion, it is fake. The font doesn't match creeds from the same time period. I can't tell in your picture, but I think the front plate looks off. The strap is fake. I wonder if the outlet stamp is there because Coach accepted a fake as a return and resold it.
