Both are authentic.The first was made in the US in 2000, the second was made in China in 2003.

Thank you so much for your help with this. I'm trying to research and compare the bags made in the US to the later bags made in China. I wonder if there is any truth to what I have read about the US bags having thicker leather... Are the US bags really more desirable?

It depends. I rehabbed a 1999 China made Willis and it was just as nice as my US bags. A 2000 China made briefcase had wonderful leather. I am currently rehabbing a 2005 China Rambler's Legacy and there are obvious differences. My 1999 US Rambler's Legacy has the best softest, supplest leather ever. The China one is stiff by comparison. It doesn't have the great leather smell. When wet, it smells like hair dye! The raw edges are covered with edge coating, while on the older ones they are left raw and can shed. I can't remember if I've seen a 2003 classic bag. What I can say is that the earlier China bags are generally as nice as US. At some date, after 2000 and before 2005, the leather changed. You could ask in the rehab or vintage clubs if anyone has a 2003 China made classic bag.

By the way, there were other plants in the 1990s besides US that turned out wonderful bags. Costa Rica and Italy are two of the best. I've rehabbed some bags from Hungary, Mexico, Turkey, and Dominican Republic, and I don't think they were of lesser quality. One of the advantages of choosing a bag made in one of these plants is that they are more likely to authentic since counterfeiters usually use US or China creeds.

Yes, it is definitely fake. The cartouche is wrong. The number has the wrong format and wrong font and size. I think that is supposed to be the city bag, and if it is, it should have a center bottom seam rather than the bottom shown.
