I have a few more comments.

Anyone buying Coach needs to read the six Salearea Coach Guides published at Ebay. There's one just on the subject of "authenticy guides" and all the misinformation usually found in them:
http://www.ebay.com/gsr/i.html?uid="salearea"&rmvSB=true

BTW, the red bag you asked about is a 2002 remake of the classic Basic Bag.

Thanks so much!
I saved the link for the Salearea Coach Guides, and will definitely be using them in the future!

Thanks also, for the info on the red bag. I was iffy on it when I received it, because it felt different than my Coach vintage bags (which I thought it was). The leather didn't seem as sturdy. So that explains it!
I actually have a vintage bag of the same size and shape, with another brand of zipper, which is more 'heavy duty'.
Here's the creed for that one. If you could tell me the year for it, I'd appreciate it too :flowers:

Thank you so much for the quick reply! That was also my thought regarding 'shinyness'. I saw another bag that looked like it had too little wear and I asked if she had dyed it. She said no, she just polished it with some kiwi polish. I asked what kind because when I used mink oil on mine it didn't change anything! She said, oh just some black shoe polish. OH! THAT kind of polish! To me that is like dyeing it!

Yep, it never hurts to ask if a bag has been treated or conditioned. Shoe polish is a complete NO !!!!! and some oils, especially things like olive oil or other food-based oils, are just as bad. One of our Coach authenticators here reinforces that opinion with her forum ID, NoShoePolish.

I know some members also like mink oil but the only things I use it on are my winter boots, and my hubbs likes it for his hunting and biker boots. But that subject is gone into in enormous detail in the Rehab and Rescue Club thread at the main Coach forum under the Coach Clubhouse forum heading.

It's impossible to tell the exact year on vintage styles, especially the ones with the glue-in numbers or no numbers at all. It's probably later 1970s or very early 1980s. Coach didn't start putting year codes in bags until 1994.

AUTHENTICATE This COACH

Please post authenticity questions related to COACH in this thread.

Note: The PurseForum requests that only members with an extensive knowledge of the brand and authenticating who have over 500 posts participate as authenticators in this AT thread. The moderators reserve the right to remove authentications that do not meet these requirements.

Please follow the following rules:

  • Before you submit a request for authentication, please search this thread to make sure that the item has not previously been authenticated. This is not a thread to ask general questions about COACH, please refer to our main Coach forum for such information.
  • This is a free service, but it is imperative that you help our authenticators by using the following format:

    Item:
    Listing number:
    Seller:
    Link:
    Comments:

  • If the bag in question is not on an auction site, please use the following:

Item Name (if you know it):
    Link (if available):
Then attach any photos (all authentication must include photos.)
    • Please be sure to include a clear readable photo of the creed stamp and serial number from inside the bag or accessory if there is one, and the bag's measurements when the bag is an older or vintage leather Coach.
    • Since mid-2014, Coach stopped putting serial numbers on creeds so in newer bags where the creeds don't have serial numbers, we also need to see pictures of the labels/tags from inside the bag. They are either both in the main open part sewn into the seam of the lining, or one might be buried deep inside the zipper pocket. One shows where made and the other has a serial number.
  • Authenticators are not required to answer every request and it is their right to ignore a request that is not in the proper format.
  • Please note that comments on price and condition are NOT permitted.
  • Do NOT PM an authenticator or moderator to request authentication. Any and all such requests should be posted in this thread.
  • Should one of your items be questioned in this thread, you are welcome to provide additional pictures or materials supporting its authenticity.
  • Do not handle your disputes with other members in this thread but take your differences to Private Messages. Failure to do so can result in banning.

Could someone tell me if this is a true (product #) (sorry if that is not the correct wording, but I am just learning this) for this item I am considering purchasing. I'd prefer to not say from where. I am looking at The Coach Source Book Volume I from 1996-97 pg 43, the belted pouch in black. But I understand that some of the H numbers out there are fake. Is this a real one or a fake? The photo is faint. It is D7H 4156. Thank you so much!

Serial numbers from bags made in certain plants in certain years often have unique features. But blanket statements can't be made with Coach since there are exceptions to every "rule."

In answer to your question, yes, there are fake bags indicating they were made in the H plant. And there are authentic bags made in the H plant.

But......that doesn't imply or prove that the serial number you've shown is on a genuine bag. We need to see pictures of the entire bag including the full creed, text AND serial number. No one can authenticate a bag based solely on a serial number.

As you've quoted post #1 of the thread, I assume you read that post and looked at the posting requirements and format. We like to see the source of bags as it's helpful not only in determining authenticity of a bag in question but also lets us verify that the seller's pictures are her own pictures of the actual bag you (as buyer) will receive.

(There have been cases where we've authenticated bags listed by sellers who stole another seller's pictures of a similar bag. So although the bag shown in the listing may have been authentic, it's not the bag the buyer receives and buyers can receive a fake in the bait and switch.)

Sure, I understand. The seller is from eBay, the name is rosettawear8. Here are 3 photos of the bag. Please let me know if I can post authentication requests more effectively, as the directions are somewhat confusing as to where to exactly post it. Thank you.

You're posting in the right place but you need to use the format set out in Post number One and include the information we ask for and the URL to the actual listing. I just searched Ebay and there is no record of a "rosettawear8" as an Ebay seller. Please read Post One again. You should be able to Copy & Paste the required information from the listing to the post here according to the format below. Thanks!

I edited and provided the link to the Sellers listing. The name is missing a "t". rosetttawear8 . Then I attempted to delete the photos I had inserted . I did not realize I could not use those photos, so if anyone can delete them they may. I tried. So sorry. Learning much here.

Thank you. Well that is awesome. So that is what the 7 means then. I'll be reading all about the H history then soon. You have a good night Ladies and thank you for your help and education.

Following the format can save you work because as long as the listing has all the necessary pictures needed for authentications, you needn't save and post the pictures again in your request.

For for the record, the seller, rosetttawear8 has a listing for a dreadful fake Louis Vuitton tie!
