I usually purchase all of my coach bags from the outlet or Macy's but I saw this at goodwill for a few bucks and had to have it. I am pretty sure it is a fake (cc on the inside and out and no serial number.) but could someone confirm that it's a fake. The hardware is heavy and the leather does smell like leather so maybe I am wrong?

Sorry it's fake. Can you get a refund? (It was illegal for them to sell it even if they admit it's fake.)

I'm not Whateve, but I'll do my best.

No, it's not a Classic Satchel, the top and zipper are different and I don't think the Classic Satchel was available with a long strap.. It's a Madison Satchel Large, style 9765, probably from 1986 or 1987.

MOST serial numbers changed from a 3+4 format to a 4+3 in 1990, but there were a few styles or perhaps just one plant that was still using the old format as late as 1993, so like everything else with Coach the only consistent thing is their inconsistency. However, the "Made In New York City" seems to have been discontinued by, or some time in, 1988. But like most Coach dates that one is also subject to revision if new evidence comes up.

There's a lot more about creeds and serial numbers in several of the six Salearea Coach Guides posted at Ebay, check the ones on Creeds, Serial Numbers and maybe Vintage and Classic Leathers.:

Amazing! Thank you SO much for your generosity in sharing your expertise, Hyacinth. I've read some of the Salearea Guides in the past, and I'll revisit them!

Smaller bags like Swingpacks sometimes don't have creeds or serial numbers, and some fakes use real leather or even a leather smell spray. Having or not having either one doesn't prove anything. Every detail - fabric pattern, colors, hardware, strap, lining, creed stitching - everything about that one is wrong. Get your money back.
