Comment: what bag is this and why does it not have numbers?!
It appears to be a late 1970s #9445 Zippered Clutch (aka Basic Bag) from the period when COACH first started using numbers in addition to the creed (which was introduced earlier in the decade). There are running debates over the exact years that these features were introduced/implemented. The earliest incarnation of the system employed registration numbers that were imprinted on leather tags that were then glued-in an aperture window embossed below the creed. These glued-in tags had a propensity for falling off over time. The bag you've cited appears to one (of many) where that indeed happened.

ETA: Again, someone else's fingers (in this case Catbird9's) appears to have been faster than mine.

Hello Authenticators,
When your time permits, may I have a response to post #17128, item number 1 on page 1142.
Thanks again!
It appears to be a #5190 Envelope Portfolio, and one obtained at a very nice price too. Everyone, correct me if I'm wrong, but the style I believe dates from the mid 1980s. The MADE IN NYC USA below the creed certainly indicates prior to 1988.

Comments: Is it possible that French leather was used to make this bag?

Thank you! :flowers:

I just won an auction(for about the same price) recently for this same bag that RLB identified for me as well. It is a great size and very comfortable. Mine is a light shade. I'm still working on rehabbing before I can wear it. Hope you are pleased as I am.

Your timing is right on the money. It seems to have been introduced in mid to late 1986, it's not in my Summer 1986 catalog but shows up as "NEW" in the Holiday 1986 book, original price $168.

Comment: this looks good but there's that extra dash. Authentic?

Comment: gotta make a choice b/w this or the one above. This one is newer right?

The serial number prefix of the first one is actually K0D- so it was made in 2000 (or maybe K9D- which would still be genuine and make it a 1999 bag). The J8P- is from 1998, so the first one is newer. They're both genuine, that extra dash was sometimes seen in serial numbers from the D plant during that time period. Think of it as a Millennial Dash.

The second one is also genuine. A few other creeds for other styles have mentioned French calfskin so it's not a problem. Again, I don't have any confirmed names for any of the bags from the 1997 Manhattan Collection.

Thank you so much? Did you think one was in better condition than the other or the same? I forget who said it that Costa Rica bags leather were pretty nice?

I'm not comfortable commenting on condition based only on photographs. That decision has to be left up to the buyer, and in fact under the Rules posted in the first post of this thread, I'm not supposed to.
  • Authenticators are not required to answer every request and it is their right to ignore a request that is not in the proper format.
  • Please note that comments on price and condition are NOT permitted.
  • Do NOT PM an authenticator or moderator to request authentication. Any and all such requests should be posted in this thread.
If anyone else wants to point out anything, they're welcome to do it. And Costa Rica bags have always been very highly thought of by Coach collectors.
