Thanks for sharing! I love visiting Chicago! I used to go there once a year and miss it very much! I loved the purse...Morgana Varu Allison you bought! I will look up the shops on my next visit. Thank you so much!

This has been very important to me for a very long time. I have made it my mission to support independent designers that use quality materials and make all their bags here.

I fell in love with a couple bags from this designer, Brynn Capella.

She is based in Chicago and proudly makes all handbags here in the USA.

I have the Italian Morgana Varu Allison bag and I have to say it is the most gorgeous leather of any handbag I have ever had, hands down, the scent is heavenly and the bag very well made. I love that the strap adjust so that you can wear it cross body or shorten the straps and it fits perfect over shoulder ro arm. She imports these fine leathers and makes everything here in Chicago.

Wait...I think I love the Mogano Varu Edie....I think you just found me a new designer! =)

been on a tour recently and the Italy local tour guide is telling us that locals dont buy Chanel, Hermes, LV etc.

TO them, they can pay a decent amt to get genuine leather bags. Dont have to be high fashion.

AND....... the brands need to have 'Made In Italy' but the factory are now employing lots of Chinese too for the work.
I have actually read up an article where the sewing are done elsewhere (not China though) and the items are shipped back to another Country (not sure if its Italy). The company removed the 'Made in XXX' tag and replaced with 'Made in YYY' tag.
In actual fact, almost 90% of the items are made in country XXX

The money they charged are way too high for the quality and we are paying for the commercials, the buildings and the high flyers salaries.

I cant imagine the amount of $ Hermes earn just from bags alone when I saw how big their building is from Youtube.

And yes, I kinda regret not getting some of the normal price leather bag at Italy. The design is nice and price too. Full genuine leather.

But I do bought this French brand Le Tannier or something at Paris. Not sure where they are made in but the leather are good and they costed much less than a LV or Chanel.

I, myself, would prefer to carry a bag completely made in the United States of America, but those things are hard to come by these days. I would love to support the country in which I live. It's like being "green" to me. You try to do as much as possible personally, to make a difference, that's all. I don't try to make my purchases to bash other countries.

I'd love to carry bags made entirely in Italy. :smile1: I love living in the USA but I think Italian craftsmanship and design is da bomb.

Julia Duren is a USA-based designer who works with drum-dyed nappa lambskin. All of her bags are made entirely in the USA:

I love her bags. They are thick smooshy leather and the last and last, much like old Coach bags. You can have them customize strap lengths and make other modifications.

Hi luvbag1 ~ Sadly Botkier now has some bags made in Indonesia.

Hi yegray - wait until you have the Brynn Capella in your hands, you will love it. It is just a fabulous line by a fabulous designer. You will use it every day and consign out all your old bags in order to purchase another. And, the Spring 2010 line is only a moment away! Enjoy!

Tano bags are made in India, and Ignes bags are made in Uruguay. I have an Ignes on the way so I can't speak for them yet, but I have about 15 Tano bags and they're all very well made. The leather is Italian and they are assembled in India.

^^It's called "the manufacturer is being informatively honest" BS! :lolots: Bags that are made by hand in Italy cost a fortune! Close to the 3K mark and the majority of handbag customers could care less. (Myself and many on TPF not included!)

I just bought an $800 dollar Michael Kors (not Michael) clutch from Nordstroms and the label said "Handcrafted in China". What kind of BS is this? This is going straight back!

Unfortunately, some high end bags are not made in Italy as you would expect from the brand/price such as:

Some Burberry bags are made in China (specifically the Nova Check ones-not all, just some), some Michael Kors collection bags are made in China, and I know for a fact that a lot of Miu Miu bags are made in Turkey.

What I noticed shopping on line is if it says "Imported" it usually means China, otherwise it will say "Italy".

You know what else upsets me is some Burberry coats are made in Malaysia, the Phillipines, etc. but they still charge so much $$.

but they still charge so much $$

They will charge however much people will pay, and they do. Many women here are testiment to that.

The local store is no longer just in our 'backyard', but the WORLD. I'm one of those who really doesn't care where my goods are made, so long as they are made well and made to last. And I'm also one of those who read the book "Deluxe: How Luxury Lost Its Luster", and it sickened me.

I'm a slow learner but am slowwwwly catching on. When I ask some of my very affluent friends (live in an estate and own horses, etc.) why they don't carry a premier designer handbag their response is: "what for?" I equate that as they care more about furnishings and/or clothing but when conversing with them it goes deeper. They can afford all three they just choose to spend their money wisely and they told me to be more informed about where things are produced; quality vs. marketing; and spend wisely!

I got disappointed when I saw that the Mulberry Alexa I bought was made in Turkey instead of England where that brand is supposed to be made. I don't have anything against products made from Turkey, China, etc and I suppose that the quality is pretty much still the same given that these brands do have to preserve their reputation in producing QUALITY handbags...but I do have a problem when products that come from these countries are still priced too high since the price of labour in those countries are very low. I think if you're buying a bag with a label that says MIC, the price of the bag should reflect that KWIM? Consumers choose to get premier designer brands and are willing to pay enormous amounts for these brands because they know that not only are the materials used for these bags expensive, but they also know that labour is expensive because each bag is painstakingly produced by hand with Italian, English, French etc craftsmanship. Seeing MIC or MIT, etc just gives us the impression of mass production and lack of exclusivity. JMHO.

These are very true facts that everyone needs to remember.

Made in Italy
is not about the little shop where each bag is being made by hand by one person who has perfected his/her craft over the course of decades anymore… It's the same mass production as in China, Indonesia or elsewhere, people are being paid sh** for 12, 14 hours days of work, most of them came to Italy to work from countries like China. It's crucial to stop imagining Italy as this fairytale country that you see in the movies! It's not at all.
