Apple Garde v. Patina Champ - An Experiment!

Here is my bucket bag, which is about 5 months old. Used patina champ method multiple times and then also sprayed with Appleguard. No water stains. I do love the slightly warmer color of the vachetta. I’ve been caught in the rain with it multiple times. No spots. And I should say when I I used the patina champ method my cloth was more than damp.

Beautiful patina!

I have used Apple Guard protectant on all my handbags including LV. For my Speedy 25b, I only sprayed the leather and interior. For my Felicie and Rosalie, I sprayed the interior. Based on online research, I shielded the canvas from the spray with paper towels. Any canvas hit with AG resulted in a sticky feeling/residual...which I wiped off with a cottonelle wipe followed by drying using a microfiber cloth.

I sprayed the canvas and the leather of my Neverfull, but didn’t find that it left a sticky residue on the canvas. Maybe because I used very light coats? The hardware was a little sticky, but I just wiped it with a damp paper towel and it’s fine now.

I would wipe canvas to remove any spray from it. I think it can cause cracking. I use Apple Guard only on the leather parts of my bags.

Today was the day! I wiped down my Speedy! That was VERY nerve-wracking, but I think I did OK.

Here’s a pic showing the just-wiped back handle (on top in this pic) versus the unwiped front handle (on the bottom):

And the whole bag, immediately post-wiping:

I’m planning to let it dry for the rest of today and then buff it this evening since I don’t think I’ll have time to buff it tomorrow morning. Pics to follow when that final step is done!

I just polished the Speedy! The leather looks and feels great! No water spots, but I think it is a tiny bit darker than it was before the Patina Champ treatment (as I expected).

And here’s a pic comparing the two bags now, after the Apple Garde on the Neverfull (and carrying it three times) and after the Patina Champ method on the Speedy (haven’t carried it yet):

So far, I’ve been pleased with the results of both methods. I don’t think either method appreciably changed the color of the vachetta. However, I’m guessing that the Speedy will develop a patina faster than the NF, since the Apple Garde will probably slow the patina process on the NF and the Patina Champ method might slightly accelerate the patina process on the Speedy.

But the real test will come when I get caught in the rain for the first time with each bag! Will there be water spots or not? If so, will they be permanent or will they fade away when the bag is dry? I’ll definitely post updates when that happens (because we all know it WILL happen eventually)!

This topic makes me happy, I'm looking forward to seeing the results! I've been thinking about purchasing apple garde for my new Pochette Metis! I think I will, after seeing this topic, and try what you did.
So glad I could help! And good luck with your PM! I hope the Apple Garde works out as well for you as it did for me and my NF!
