I am honoured to have stumped you :D

Unlike most green garnets (which are also gorgeous) they are slightly more yellow-green and is better with my colouring. They were traditionally very popular in Russia. I do have ring - off to find it :search:

I found some basic info on good ol' Wik

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demantoid

But what I like about them is they have that sparkling brilliance.

yes, garnets have a VERY high refractive index, so they're great in rings...mega sparkly! now you've got me wanting a demantoid (although the yellow isn't good on me)...;)

I did it!!!!!
I went to a wonderful jeweler that made me a customized initial pendant last spring. It is a little mom & pop store that has been in existence since I was a young girl. I totally trust them. Anyway, I ordered and it will be ready in 10 days! It is a 1.68 oval (but lookes rounded) green tourmaline. It measures 7.5mm and fits in my setting perfectly. The stone was there for me to see. I LOVE it. The cost including labor was $225. The jeweler said that if he had to bring one in (special order) that the stone would cost 50% more than the one I'm using. I looked at an extremely dark blue sapphire that I did not care for. There was also a stone that began with a letter "i" that was a blueish-purplish. It was pretty and only cost $175 but this green tourmaline is TDF. So it will go into my platinum ring with tapered baguettes on each side. So excited!!!!

Iolite? Hehe, Hokaplan I am so happy for you!!! I am also really surprised at how fast you are. I can't wait to see the ring! And I'm glad you went for the tourmaline - I love them!!!

sounds pretty...you'll have to show us pics when the ring is ready!

the "i" stone you looked at in the store is probably an iolite.

Omg! So exciting.. you have to share the results with us!!!!!!

Congrats Hokaplan! With the prasiolite all prasiolite is heat treated no matter how saturated the hue, which is not a bad thing, but quartz almost never comes out of the ground green. I was going to suggest Chatham synthetic emerald but it sounds like you've found a great natural stone at a great price. Green tourmaline is beautiful and durable, and most attractive green stones - chrome diopside, prasiolite, emerald - just don't hold up in an e-ring. Great choice!

Thanks tiffanysilver. I saw the stone in person and sat it on top of my setting. I love it so much. My jeweler said 10 days if we don't get any snowstorms! But we're getting a big snowstorm this Tuesday into Wednesday so he might get a little behind schedule. It is ok though - well worth the wait!
