I'm glad you like the tsavorite! I have a ring w/ it and it is beautiful. For larger sizes, I have seen people on Pricescope buy from here:

http://www.swalagemtraders.com/search-gems/results.php

as well as here:

This site has quite a few too:

and here:

http://www.africagems.com/tsavorite-standard.html

I've never shopped with any of them though, so I can't say if they are good to work with or not, but it is a good starting point.

I've also seen loose stones that are custom cut by a guy named Bob Kast on Diamond Bistro too. He has some stuff finished as well.

Most jewelers will not have tsavorite jewelry in stock. It is a bit more unusual.

You can also look at a demantoid garnet (only 6.5 on hardness though, so you'd have to be more careful) and green tourmaline (7.5 hardness) too for something that would hold up to daily wear.

This is a picture of an estate ring from 1935. It is very art deco 1 carat gorgeous emerald, 1.2 carats of mine cut diamonds set in platinum and the emerald is mounted in 18k yellow gold. It is one of my favorite rings.

My local jeweler just called me and told me about a lab-created emerald called a chatham emerald. It would cost $450 in the 1.25 carat size. What do you think of that idea? Or a green amythsyt would be a little less. She is looking into that mint green garnet stone and will call me later this afternoon.

Tsavorites are pretty.....Leon Mege set one that is outstanding on his website. Love it.

Green garnets are another option.

Still, if asked to choose between sapphire or emerald, the sapphire would win!

I have a lovely emerald ring (I'll try to take a picture today), but my mother's sapphire scratched it when she grabbed my hand at a restaurant. It is a beautiful stone, but I don't think I would want an emerald in a daily use ring.

it's up to you whether you want a lab created vs natural stone.

green amythests are beautiful...they are not very expensive. I have a green amythest with tsavorite garnets set around it. I'll take a pic for you...

Thanks everyone for your help, advice, and pictures coming! I want a new stone in this setting so I can wear it! Too many choices but I will definitely get something. People seem mixed on emerald vs sapphire. I have a sapphire and diamond yellow gold ring that I received when I was a teenager. I know the sapphire in platinum looks totally different. But wondering if the emerald might be nice too.

I really don't think you can go wrong with sapphire, emerald, or any gemstone. You could even go with less expensive stones like blue topaz or amethyst and it would be stunning.

Just my preference, but I am not really a fan of lab-created stones. The color is superb on them, but I'm a little creeped out by them. Test tube stones.....I'm weird though.

here is my green amythest set in 18k WG with graduated color tsavorite garnets around it

what does your setting look like? if it's a high prong setting like a typical engagement ring, there is no way in the world I would recommend you putting an emerald in that setting. emeralds are too soft to be exposed like that. again, I also caution you about having an emerald for every day wear. I think you'll have your heart broken because the stone will chip, crack, &/or break. the safest green stone to use in a high prong exposed setting for daily wear is a green sapphire...period.

I have an emerald set in 18k WG. the side stones are green diamonds and white diamonds. I'm also posting a pic that shows the inclusions in the stone (just as every natural emerald has).

F&F - the setting is no higher than the one in your 2nd ring picture. Is the chatham (lab-created) emerald harder than a natural one? The 1.25 size of a chatham emerald would cost me $450. Should I go for it? BTW, your rings are beautiful. And for those of you following my other threads, this ring is just a side-track. I will be back at Tiffanys in April - LOL!

F&F you have the most amazing jewelry! I am in awe ... you have incredible taste.
^thank you!

^so your setting is not super high (like a tiffany 6-prong), but I still wouldn't wear an emerald for an e-ring. that is my opinion/recommendation, but you will have to make your own decision.

I googled & found that chatham emeralds are 7.5 - 8 on the Mohs scale of hardness...about the same as a natural emerald.

I forgot about green diamonds (my emerald ring reminded me :shame:). a green diamond would be the hardest most durable green stone to wear as an e-ring since it's a 10 on the Mohs scale. as you can see from my pics, green diamonds are more of an olive green...closer to the color of a peridot.
