Am I the only one who doesn’t use my Kelly 28 Sellier?

I have to say that I adore kelly sellier bags in 28 and 25, but don’t use them much bc these days I carry a card case, hand sanitizer and a phone. I don’t need the weight or bulk of a kelly. I’m also an outlier opinion bc I prefer to carry Kelly bags by hand, not cross body. These past few years, I’ve reverted to a picotin.

I did buy a 28 BB retourne K that I loaned indefinitely to a friend. I don’t really miss it bc I use my Black barenia 30B in ITA place. Both have brushed hw and burnished patina/weatherized by @docride. I can just chuck stuff like umbrella and iPad into the B30. The barenia can withstand a bit more rough weather. i actually use it in the rain, and it is also less scratch prone than the box K. I wipe the water off, and it remains velvety and gorgeous lol. Basically, I think of Birkin 30s as the perfect retourne bag.

I do prefer the B25 sellier to the B25 kelly. IMO it’s just cuter. But, I’m not the most practical person.
I also prefer to carry my Kelly by hand as well. Maybe I can be a birkin girl.

* ETA: IMO a larger kelly 32 is much less unwieldy when you carry it by hand and it makes you look thinner
i most likely will not rehome the K28 retourne permanently bc I certainly don’t want to wake up one day and decide to try another K28 retourne

How is the weight of the Black Barenia B30 compared to regular Togo B30?

@absolutanne , I tagged you in the link above with some weight comparisons I had made some time ago. The weight of a 28K box leather is 765 grams in case that is an argument for or against carrying one in this thread.
I can weigh my 28 retourne whenever I call it back from my friends closet, or perhaps someone here has that info.

It’s taken me years to come to the conclusion that my first H bag is just not for me. A beautiful Kelly 28 Sellier noir Epsom ghw. Originally when my SA presented me with the bag, he said that I shouldn’t turn the offer down as it is a classic that many of his clients would kill for. It’s now 7 years later and I probably have only worn the bag 15 times. I find it boxy and difficult to wear. On the other hand, I have a Kelly 25 Sellier in etoupe Epsom phw that I find much easier to wear in comparison. However, more and more I am finding myself wishing for a Kelly 25 (or even 28) in retourne Togo. Has anyone else had a similar evolutionary journey with moving away from Sellier to Retourne? Now I am undecided if I should keep my first H bag as it is beautiful even though I don’t wear it much.

@Swedishstyle You're not alone. I find my Gold K28 PHW very hard to wear. It was my first H bag. I love it and think it is insanely chic. I would die for a K25 in the exact same combo.

Luckily for me, I am not a bag person, so I I have happily turned down several bags before I was offered something I actually wanted. (Including the classics that ‘many would kill for’). I would never ever use a black Epsom bag, no matter how desirable it to by the rest of the world. I am even less likely to use an Etoupe bag (talk about an unpopular opinion). I think you should only ever spend money on what you really want. Your SA probably thought he was helping you make up your mind, but he did you a huge disservice by introduce a moral judgement to the purchase.

It’s a bag. It’s a very expensive bag to have sitting around and collecting dust (hopefully, not literally). Sell it and use the money to buy what you want.

I have the same Kelly as you @Swedishstyle plus a vintage one in box if one wasn’t enough. LOL Both black both gold hardware. Basically I wear them with long black coats in the winter or a structured tweed jacket in early spring /autumn. Pretty much any outfit that works with a long black coat will work with the bag. I use it for work, travel and smart lunches that sort of thing. Definitely too big for evening, unless I go out straight from work in which case it comes with me. Never had any complaints…
It is hard to make them work for late spring/summer. It may have something to do with the colour as well.
I get as much wear as Possible from October to april and then they are packed away. To my eye these bags look strange with floaty summer dresses (although I have seen them styled like that in photos and in real life with twillies and charms making them more casual)
Retourner now is another matter altogether - much much easier to wear. Most of us now have casual lifestyles and smaller/less structured bags seem easier. Having said that - black Kelly sellier 28 is probably the best looking bag ever made- not that I am biased or anything. The proportions are perfection.
Like the photo, I wear mine with no twillies, no clochete, no charms and mostly carry by hand, but I keep the strap inside for travel. I hope that helps and would love to hear from other owners how they wear theirs.

Edited to add: will look for some photos with outfits if that helps but there are lots in the casual kelly and the wildlife threads. For me it’s a winter bag plain and simple.
I live in California and we don’t have ‘winter’ per se. I have multiple Kellies in different colors, but for me it’s about the outfit, not about the season. Very honestly, if I felt I can only wear something with a specific garment in a specific season, I would find it hugely limiting. I think these bags are too expensive to be limited to such a small time window every year.

I have the exact same dilemma about the exact same bag, which was my first Kelly. It has been stored in my closet for about four years now, largely because of the pandemic, but also because of a massive change in my lifestyle. Like you, I find it boxy and not user-friendly at all! Unless you have children or someone else you might like to give it to in the future, I would sell it. I’ll likely do the same, but I have two daughters in their late 20s, and I keep wondering if they might possibly cherish it down the road. If I were you, I would buy something that makes your heart sing.

I had the exact same bag, black epsom kelly 28 sellier w ghw. Sold it after owning it for a year. To me, it's very difficult to use. I hate to bump into others, and it's hard to get in and out. It's 28 but cannot hold much. So I had to let it go. Now I use 25 sellier/retourne, and 32 retourne as well.

I am in a similar situation. I think a k25 sellier would suit me much better. I use my k25 retourne every day. I don’t know if I can let the k28 go though even though I have only used it once since I got it. I keep telling myself I will use it when I am older or when big bags come back into fashion.

On the other hand, you might consider selling it and getting something you actually use all the time. That way your daughters will have sentimental attachment to it bc of you versus “a bag mom never used”.

Just wondering, are you able to wear the Kelly 28 crossbody? I think that may help in terms is usability as it will keep the bag more protected. Has anyone tried this and succeeded?
I wear mine crossbody and I’m 5’2”. Def agree that makes it easier to wear and protect. Also got an additional longer strap which makes it even easier to wear this way. Good suggestion to try before abandoning I think! Also makes it less formal and more chic I think
