i have to say, it does strike me as odd that he keeps saying he doesn't have a career strategy. Of course he does - he is aware of the industry, what drives it, why he'd be involved in a tv show where he's a hunk vs balancing with roles where he's not relying on his looks (ie seeking indies and comedies) and branching out into product endorsement. Last someone ran his imdb profile, he does have a commercial (endorsement and product) agent. So, those people at his agents office and his publicist aren't sitting around entirely waiting for an inspiration, and neither is he. I think he's trying to make it not look like he's over engineering things and that he cares about the quality of the material (which i do think he does), but anyone who is in hollywood and getting parts who say they don't have a plan or strategy about their career...i don't buy it. But then i never believe anyone who says they don't read things about themselves either, so go figure.

Ok, don't all jump on me at once over this post but...

I'm willing to give Alex a bit of leeway here, because I kind of get what he was trying to say. I think he mangled his words by saying a definitive "no I don't have a career strategy", but perhaps he was saying that that was not the driving force behind it, ie "the strategy" vs "the roles/directors/art". I think he feels that he likes to make artistic choices and do things he hasn't done before, whilst also earning a living and making some headway up the lists of actors noted directors want to work with. And, in a way, that's a career choice all on it's own.

I also think that's the Swede in him coming out - he doesn't like to appear showy, but quietly get more successful and have more paths open up to him, including fragrances etc. I actually think he might feel uncomfortable talking about his successes and so phrases it that way. It seems like the internal Swede vs The Big F**king Movie Star argument verbalised.

Anyhow, as usual, I rambled :amuse:..and probably didn't articulate all that ^ very well. But after actually going back and listening to the interview, that comment seems to be much ado about nothing.

Thanks for the Standard interview Santress :smile1:. Not sure they had their facts straight with some of it: The part about working with Lara Stone sounded to me like it was taken from a piece about working with Crystal Renn for the Interview shoot where he got his BDSM on.

Well, he's got to have some sort of career strategy, even it's only 'do more comedies'.

He mentioned in the GQ interview 'it's important that I make good choices now', right?
So yes, he's actually probably doing some career planning, but I doubt he's fully mapped it out, even if his agents/managers probably are trying to.

^^^ Lol I wish I could be that succinct. Sadly that appears not to be in my DNA.

Hah! Usually I'm not (must be the possible sinus infection causing me to be concise).

I have a friend, possibly the smartest person I've ever met, who apparently literally can't think in anything but complete paragraphs. It's rather amazing to watch/listen to/read.

And yes, I find Alex's Porsche to be enjoying his success, not flaunting it. He's a single wealthy male, were some of us expecting him to drive around in a Yaris or a minivan? Why begrudge him a sports car?

^^ Because it's pointless. He bought a fast sports car in a country you can't even drive fast. I could've understood the enjoying part in Europe because you can drive fast but USA? There it's just flaunting, the car isn't even practical. It's a waste of gas and since we're just emphasizing on Alex's Swedishness it's not very eco-friendly and the Swedes are known for this. Also for some people it's just not comprehensible how you can switch from an Audi to Porsche. And lastly, it's just a big D-Bag-mobile. Lawyers and arrogant business men buy Porsche. :shrugs:

If I had the type of money that he was making I would damn well buy what ever car I wanted and I think there are worse cars he could have gone for. I mean he could be running around in a big a** Hummer, or have 20 cars stashed somewhere like some do.

Speaking personally, I like cars. Always have. I like them even more if they go fast! If I have the option between a fast car and a green car sorry, I am going to go for the fast one. Even if I can't do more than 110km/h legally in most states here, I like the option that if I get into trouble that when I put my foot down, the car I am going to drive is going to respond and if I had the option of buying any car I wanted, I would probably be tooling around is a friggin Maseratti with a big grin on my face! Let him have his Porsche!

Even by the standard of the house he has bought, it is nice but not over the top so I think he is pretty low maintanence kind of guy...... who likes nice cars.

As for the whole career, I think the Calvin Klein thing was a great move! They are paying him a large chunk of change to do something that like the idea of. The end result was was classy, the fragrance is nice and he gets a very nice pay day. Win Win. Sounds like good business accume to me. At least it wasn't a cheesy campaign. If you want an example, check out the latest Brad Pitt debarcle.

As for the career strategy or not, he is a working actor. At the moment with such a large chunk of his year taken up with TB, he is probably making the best of what is on offer that fits with his schedule. I agree that while he does talk a lot about creative reasons for taking a project, it would not be the only one. It is easy for us to sit back and wonder why he did this or did that, but we don't have all the facts. Sure, Battleship may not have been the best move, BUT, It gives him a part in big budget movie, he gets to work on a more techincal shoot which gives him more experience if he wants to go in this direction. Who knows maybe he took it as a learing experience to see how a movie with this kind of budget works in preperation for his own projects?

I am not saying that he can do no wrong, he is human, it happens. What I am saying that there are many reasons that would influence his decission to do one project over another.

So for what it is worth, I like him as an actor and as a human being he doesn't seem to be an totally arrogant douche. I am not his manager or his agent or his publicist, or the man himself. If I don't like a project that he does, simple I won't go see it!

End rant brought to you courtesy of a very early morning, a late night and possibly one too many vodkas!

I'm just gonna be one hunned and say that I don't even read his interviews anymore. And it's because I feel like he's not being one hunned; he's mostly either ironic(with the same answers ova and ova)or pandering to the stans by giving them what they want to hear. And of course I know that he has to play the game but he's just not savvy at it, IMO. As far as the porche, I say: Do him. Make your money, spend your money, I personally don't hold this guy to any sort of higher standard so whatever he does, it's on him and it doesn't affect me in the slightest. I also don't believe for a second that he doesn't read about himself because his attempts at self-deprecation sound exactly like the certain criticisms I always read about on him. Having said that, he doesn't seem like a general azzf*ck in life, so there.

I guess I should start doing that too. It's not like he's saying anything new anyway.
