Honestly though, his comments don't seem to be aimed at getting a reaction from the audience.
It's like one of those moments that are painfully awkward but the person just doesn't seem to know how or when to STOP.

On some intellectual level people understand Hitler/the Nazi era and might be able to play devil's advocate about the positive(?) merits of that regime (the meteoric rise of Germany after losing WWl then having to pay reparations which lead to it's financial depression and low morale of the German people) but they don't condone the atrocity of 12-13 million people being murdered in the concentration camps.

Cannes over reacted IMO.

Good point... I don't know how I would begin to deal with a family ancestry that condoned Nazism...
Everyone is entitled to feel pride in their family history, but how difficult it must be to reconcile that pride with concentration camps and persecution...
LVT is perhaps still not fully reconciled with his family history...

And I agree with you that Cannes overdid it...
Trying to set an example maybe...

Sounds like a lot of folks but on this thread, Saywatpepo is banned (forever? for a while? too long in any case) and Lars von Trier is banned from Cannes. But hopefully the film stays.
