Mansur Gavriel A funky smell to the new batch of calf MG bags

In the minority, no complaints about my moss calf lady-slight smell but it is going away slowly, I've had calf prior to this-white, cobalt, red, rosa - and this is equally as nice.

I'm there with you, +1! I got my Rosa crossbody last week and I love it. I've been using it daily albeit carefully

it's hard to describe but perhaps this photo will somewhat show what i mean...

LEFT = March/May launch (glossier, richer, smells of expensive calfskin) , RIGHT = July launch (matte, slight rubber/tacky hand feel, smells of bleach)

Thanks for the pics! I totally agree on your descriptions. I have the royal blu mini bucket from March and a blu lady bag from a couple months ago and the leather qualities are totally different. I hope they bring back the calf coated from before! But the smell does go away, and using leather conditioner makes it go away faster.

One word comes to mind when I feel the leather on my moss lady: Spongy. It feels like it is coated with a thick layer of something...like wax, or dye.

Looking at this moss bucket on NAP, the same colour bucket looks shinier.

Definitely not the same leather as my moss lady which is very matte and reflects only diffused light even when photographed with flash.

I noticed this difference too! the calf shown on pictures is like the calf from previous batch! it looks more sturdy - the flap in ladybag, the bucket shape.. it's nothing like that.. I just don't understand why [emoji20] I don't mind the matte, or even the smell, just hope it will keep its shape better.

I definitely have not seen the calf that shiny, ever, only veg tanned. The calf always has been more matte. It looks like it was somehow modified for NAPs photos.

I am posting a picture of my flamma from last year and the original runs. My other calf-rosa, and sold off cobalt and white were not shiny either.

My moss is different in texture that my previous calf but I also think the structure of the lady bag is part of the issue as it falls differently.

Spongy? Not sure what you mean by that. Do you mean porous?

I've seen some of the newer calf bags start out even more matte than before, but equally sturdy. The calf will develop a slight sheen at it patinas. It won't be like the veg-tanned though.

this looks EXACTLY like my mini bucket Blu from the March relaunch! I suspect this exact bag was a "salesman sample" made for showroom market appointments and for loaning out to photoshoots approx. 6 months in advance of the true production batch (I work in fashion so I am very familiar with product cadences). Too bad they did not follow through with the same quality leather in production as the earlier batches.

just one more thing i noticed is that the new batch definitely scratches a lot easier (the leather tends to pull much easier from nail scratches VS the March version leather thanks to having a glossier and richer wax coating).

Hmm, that makes sense. I know some retailers simply re-colour the photos when they need to make separate listings for different colours.

Just want to check, is your Mansur Gavriel imprint on the front of the bag slightly set in / embossed in the calf? Or just printed on the surface?
On my veg tanned bucket, it is set in, but on the moss lady, it is on the surface.

I'm not sure how to describe the spongy feeling... Yes porous can describe it too. Maybe rubbery too?

Ohh the calf patinas? I like that! I would like to see it develop a little more variation and look more alive.

Interesting! Now I'm curious to see a full shot of your shiny Blu mini bucket.

Yes, I already have 1 fingernail scratch on the side of the bag, from lightly brushing it while trying to keep the bag in its dust bag. I couldn't believe it scratched so easily. And the rubbery surface attracts dust which settles and cannot be easily swept off. I can imagine if I use a paper tissue to wipe it, it's going to turn snow-flecked.

I received that bag from them and in reality the bag wasn't shinny at all as the pictures. I was so disappointed! I finally sent it back.
Here's a picture with flash.

Yea the rubbery surface definitely attracts more dirt than the smooth calf leather from earlier stock. I used leather conditioner to get the dirt off and it also helps with the surface scratches.

Definitely looks very different compared to what was pictured in the sale photos. Your Moss looks even more matte and much darker than mine.

here's the "old" mini bucket in daylight, so much shinier and richer even WITHOUT flash.

elainie13 pls share the amazing comparison photo you took for your blog over here (the royal vs blu).

I am not sure I see shiny as being better. None of my other bags from different brands are what I'd describe as shiny. I think they're definitely trying out a different way of treating it but not necessarily worse.
