2023 Resolution: Shopping my Own Bags and SLG Collection

TPF may earn a commission from merchant affiliate
links, including eBay, Amazon, and others

A long standing tradition in this thread is to remind ourselves of how wonderful our own collections are by showcasing them. We can see how far we have come, collection wise, and we reminded that we have all (or most of) what we need making it easier to shop our own closets.

• New theme weeks start each Sunday

• Don’t jump ahead but, if you miss a week, please do show your bags “late”.

• Show bags individually or in a group

• You do NOT have to wear the bags that week

• For added fun, show old pictures from previous years to demonstrate how you have curated it over time.

• This is completely voluntary. There is no pressure to post at any time.

So what are the showcases? In the Fall, we group our bags by makers! Feel free to show bags, small leather goods, or however it is easiest to organize!

Don´t say "tinker around" please! This term makes me so mad.(*)
Oops! I didn't mean to offend. I'll never use the term again, I promise! :drinks:

Having my work being called "tinkering around" drives me mad!
I'd never refer to anyone else's projects that way. The forum is filled with such skilled artists! Your paintings and sewing projects are some of the highlights of my time here.
This new curb couch bag will be stunning once you've worked out the little details. You have a natural skill and flair that people train their whole lives to master! Don't be discouraged. The end product will be divine.

Hope the family health issues resolve themselves soon,

May your, your family´s and your kitten´s health problems be solved quickly! I´m sending positive energy!
Thank you both for the well wishes. :hugs:

edit: caught a very big typo! PSA: don't post before dawn and wait until you've had some coffee.

If you start to paint with acrylic paints it won´t be any childplay, because you will put skill, love and determination into it. Please give it a try!

*speaking of tinkering around: my man managed to totally discourage me tonight. I´m on a new me-made handbag project. As usual it´s an attempt to polish poo or in this case a very special kind of leather: curb couch!
It´s a challenge, a learning curve, nothing is straight forward and certainly nothing will turn out perfect. Plus my own attitude is changing between "I can do it and love what I do" and "I hate handmade- I want shop bought in a posh box" all the time. Still I put time, effort and my limited but developping skills into it. Having my work being called "tinkering around" drives me mad!
I wish I had your skill and determination. There are things I kind of want to do but I don't have the energy or motivation to devote to them.

Oh dear, sorry! You did not offend me! I feared you were offending yourself and as I am very good at doing this to myself I felt the urge to stop you from going down this painful road.

Please use any wording you like any time!

Thank you so much for the wonderful encouragement! It feels amazing! ❤️

Aww, thank you! I usually doubt my skills, because I am perfectly aware that everything can be done better, neater, more professionally, but determined I am... taking on a challenge means to fight to the end! Haha... On these cold dark days I need a project to keep my brain alive and stop me from mindlessly watching YouTube and snacking too much.

Please tell us about your project ideas!

Do let your husband discourage you. You have so much talent and vision.

I’m a bit behind on this thread. So many topics to catch up on!

@Sparkletastic, @lill_canele, thanks for the scoop on sneakers. I wear mostly Vans myself because they work for me, but I have a pair of Converse high-top and two pairs of Gucci that join the rotation.

@Sparkletastic, @880, denim is my nemesis! I swear I just don’t have the right body type. I have about 10 pairs of skinny jeans from LOFT that are six years old and those are about the best I can find (their newer versions have too much stretch). I love white denim, even in the winter, but it gets dirty really easily, so requires care. I like a darker wash in blue denim and I’m a mid-rise person all the way. This is part of the reason why I live in athletic wear, as it’s so much easier to get bottoms to fit!

@jblended, @cowgirlsboots, @880, I also find decluttering, organizing and cleaning to be a form of relaxation. There might have been times when I took a day off from work to do just that! But I agree with whoever mentioned it that you have to be careful not to go overboard!

I am still working on cleaning out some stuff and am once again posting to our work site, as well as taking items into consignment and donating, or giving to friends. More work to do, but I’m pleased with the progress.

This is probably beyond my skills but we had our couch recovered several years ago and I still have fabric left over. The back needs recovering again. The original upholsterer has retired.

A few of our dining room chairs get hit by the sun during the day. I want to make fitted covers for them. I have thrown a piece of cloth over them for now.

Also we are getting new carpet installed and I intend to cut and bind pieces to make throw rugs to put in front of our chairs to keep the carpet from wearing out in those places.

I used to make quilts. I loved quilting by hand but the piecing was done by machine and I didn't love that as much. I much prefer projects I can do sitting on the couch. Lately I've been crocheting blankets we don't need but they are easy to do without too much attention to instructions.

Hello everyone
Like others, I’ve been having a tough time so I’ve been more MIA than I had anticipated. Not health related. Got laid off over the summer & have not been able to find another job. It’s not a good time to be in STEM.

Trying to not be too depressed about it. Going to start doing things I’ve wanted to do but have not had the time for before.

I’ve caught up on the thread & have enjoyed seeing everyone’s lovely bags. Since I’ve missed most of the brand weeks, I won’t spam the thread with pics. I’ll share some pics of my favorites though.

I find it relaxing too. I try to do it a lot before the holidays.

Oh, just go for it! There are tutorials for kinds of handiwork on youtube that will teach you the basics.
Upholstery for example is no brain surgery. Usually it´s nothing more than tacking fabric (with padding underneath) on a frame and then hiding the tacks underneath some kind of border or decorative upholstery nails.
For chair covers you can certainly buy patterns to adjust to your chairs or simply construct your pattern by sticking together pieces of paper.
The binding on pieces of carpet sounds the most challenging to me, because it usually needs a strong sewing machine. Depending on the type of carpet you might be able to do it by hand. You´d have to find a nice wide ribbon that´s fit to be folded over the edges. I´ve bound our old oriental rugs before where the fringe had gone missing.

Quilting will always remain a magical craft to me. My mind can´t process the neat piecing and I have no clue how to get the wadding neatly sandwiched between the top layer and the back to then quilt the whole thing. Of course there are tutorials too, but I stopped where the basting glue spray came into action, because I have no clue where to buy the right kind from.

I love the idea of crocheted blankets. They are so nice and cosy!

I never used basting glue spray. I'm not sure it existed when I used to quilt. I discovered that I loved hand quilting by accident. The piecing wasn't as fun as I thought it would be but the hand quilting was relaxing. Putting the layers together wasn't difficult. I used preformed batting. I can't remember if I basted it or just pinned it.

I don't really use the crocheted blankets but I love making combinations of colors and patterns. For myself, I like using an electric throw. Most of the knitted or crocheted clothing I've made myself I don't like as well as things I've bought from stores, mostly due to fit, but I crocheted some booties that I love. Nothing keeps my feet as warm as they do. I put on a pair when I first get into bed until my feet get warm, then they are easy to kick off.

OMG, one of my favorite purchases of all time used to be these bed socks, which I can’t find anymore. Clearly I need to learn how to crochet!
