2023 Resolution: Shopping my Own Bags and SLG Collection

A long standing tradition in this thread is to remind ourselves of how wonderful our own collections are by showcasing them. We can see how far we have come, collection wise, and we reminded that we have all (or most of) what we need making it easier to shop our own closets.

• New theme weeks start each Sunday

• Don’t jump ahead but, if you miss a week, please do show your bags “late”.

• Show bags individually or in a group

• You do NOT have to wear the bags that week

• For added fun, show old pictures from previous years to demonstrate how you have curated it over time.

• This is completely voluntary. There is no pressure to post at any time.

So what are the showcases? In the Fall, we group our bags by makers! Feel free to show bags, small leather goods, or however it is easiest to organize!

I don’t think I’m old (although the Knight is rather quick to point out my grey hairs) but handbags make me feel old.

My current complaint? Hermes.

So I was reading the blog post about the best grab-and-go Hermes bags, and … they’re all ugly. I’m not talking about the Kelly Depeche. And the WoCs are … inoffensive?

But do you remember the Jean Paul Gaultier days, when bag experiments resulted in things like the Jypsiere, or the Massai, or the Lindy? Not like some weird halted fission reaction were two SLG half-melted into each other.

Back in my day, designers designed bags. Galliano for Dior and Tom Ford for Gucci and JPG for Hermes and Philo for Chloe and Marc Jacobs for LV and even seasonal Chanels would play around a little and … and handbags were fun… “back in the day”.
I think houses are so focused on having an of the moment “It” bag or on being “classic” that they are not taking the risks required to create something iconic. I get stopped every time I wear my Sac Camail, which was a Gaultier-era Hermes creation, but it would never be made now. It has too distinctive of a design. But that is exactly what makes a bag iconic. Iconic bags are risky bags that pay off and set a style that defines a house.

I had dropped off the mini papillon that came in the papillon 30 at the consignment shop. It went right away as a purse. Not sure how I am going to count it in my outs. It was never used. I am glad it went to someone who will actually use it.
Congratulations! When something like this happens to me, I count it as reducing the cost of the bag, if you keep track of that.

I do keep track of the ones I paid for as far as the original price, I don’t do cost per wear. Though I did immediately think how much less the mother bag now cost me all these years later.
I don't do cost per wear either but I do keep track of what I paid and calculate profit/loss when I sell something. A few times I've bought a set of several items on ebay, sold the things I didn't want and ended up basically keeping the thing I wanted for free.

You are my hero. Very rarely do I make a profit. I bought a fun NWT metallic mz wallace for almost full price and sold my barely worn anthracite metallic one for a lot less to make room for it. The old Lv are the only ones I find you don't you don't take a loss on. The ones I still have, I am not selling. I don't own any Hermes.

Amazing bags all around. I especially like the Kate Spade - it’s very charming. This is the kind of ‘inspired by’ design that still manages to be its own thing. Like I feel it’s influenced by the Birkin, but the double spades are interesting and different, while at the same time being decidedly ‘Kate Spade.’
