2023 Resolution: Shopping my Own Bags and SLG Collection

TPF may earn a commission from merchant affiliate
links, including eBay, Amazon, and others

A long standing tradition in this thread is to remind ourselves of how wonderful our own collections are by showcasing them. We can see how far we have come, collection wise, and we reminded that we have all (or most of) what we need making it easier to shop our own closets.

• New theme weeks start each Sunday

• Don’t jump ahead but, if you miss a week, please do show your bags “late”.

• Show bags individually or in a group

• You do NOT have to wear the bags that week

• For added fun, show old pictures from previous years to demonstrate how you have curated it over time.

• This is completely voluntary. There is no pressure to post at any time.

So what are the showcases? In the Fall, we group our bags by makers! Feel free to show bags, small leather goods, or however it is easiest to organize!

I don’t always do stats, or updates on my goals, but I have some time and the inclination, so here we go!

I was off to a good start in January, for those who might remember, but then things fell apart and I did more shopping than I had planned in February and March. But! I’ve been pretty good at sticking to my goals, and I cleaned out many items that weren’t getting use, or didn’t work for me, so that’s been good.

In early February, I sold a bunch of old, fine jewelry and traded in a few pieces, too. Most of what I sold was from my mom when she cleaned out after divorcing my dad, but it wasn’t my style, so it just sat. While I didn’t get as much money for those items as I was hoping, the money I did get helped to defray the cost of the trades, since you have to spend twice the amount of what you’re trading in. For the trades, I got a smaller pair of diamond studs so I can once again wear my earring jackets, a dainty pair of diamond hoops and a diamond tennis bracelet, all in white gold. Nothing is big, or fancy; they’re more every day pieces, so I’m wearing the items a lot more.

I replaced a bunch of lululemon that wasn’t working for me with pieces in some lighter color ways in styles that do work for me, which makes me happy. I also got a dress, pants and top for spring from Lilly Pulitzer. I also bought an ombre sweatshirt from Lilly, but that might go back since it’s a more voluminous style than I usually wear.

Now I’m working on adding a few more fine jewelry pieces I’ve been eying and I picked out a new Louis Vuitton bag for spring. I wanted a carefree crossbody style and found one I love!

I took something like 80 items to my local consignment store, a mix of clothing, costume jewelry and other accessories I’m just not wearing. I set aside about 20 home items to donate the next time a local charity comes through my neighborhood. I have a number of items I’m hoping to sell to Yoogi’s or Fasionphile since my local consignment store keeps 60%; I just need to submit them for quotes. It’s a mix of bags, SLGs and Tiffany silver jewelry. I’ve moved them out of my bedroom, though, and I’m loving the extra space.

My horrible boss stepped down from her position as of this past Monday, so my stress level at work has plummeted. She’s been going after me for over a year and, while I could have changed organizations and stuck with the same employer (it’s a big place, there are plenty of options), I love what I do and decided to stick it out. That won’t fix all the work problems, but it’s a good first step.

Great to see all the updates from others here! @jblended, glad you and your mom are on the mend, and @Katinahat, I was just wondering the other day how you’ve been, so I’m glad things are improving for you!

I remember begging my mom for a pair of skinny jeans in the 2000s.
Previously I always wore the straight-leg jeans of the 90s, which I didn't mind because I didn't care when I was younger.
I wanted the low-rise skinny jeans too and I remember just hopping around in them to get them on.

I used to be super into jeans in my teens and college years. At one point in think I had 20 pairs of jeans (that was a lot for me).
It wasn't until I went to professional school that we all wore business casual and I just stopped wearing them. And I was also on the East Coast, and in the city, I didn't really see that many people with jeans in my area. Especially not the distressed jeans that Californians love. And then when I came back to California I wasn't as into them anymore.

Now I have 2 high rise skinny jeans (one plain, one distressed), 1 mid-rise skinny jean (black/gray, slightly distressed).
And then 2 pair of baggy jeans (one high rise, one low rise).
I mainly wear the skinny ones in the fall/winter, and the baggy ones in the spring/summer. I do enjoy being able to wear skinny jeans with heeled boots, I think it gives a very sleek look.
I can't stand wearing skinny jeans in the summer, I don't know how I did it back then. :P I even played soccer and basketball in them!

I'm not a legging girl. I'm part of the group that believes leggings are not pants. I don't mind wearing a very long top or a skirt over a pair of leggings, but that's my limit.
I actually really like tights. I think it's something brought over from my time on the East Coast. I wore them to not get bitten by mosquitos lol but I found them a great season transition piece. And if I'm wearing a shorter flowy skirt, I just feel safer with tights (nude or black).
I attended college on the East Coast in the Boston area. A lot of us lived in jeans & hoodies.

I usually wear leggings with my sweater dresses to keep my legs warm in late fall/winter.

The one bag I have that leans closest to white or cream (kind of blends in with the wall color here). I had classified it in my mind as belonging to the taupe/beige family, but am not so sure it's a good fit there? Anyway, I own this exact bag in deep blue as well as dark orange. The dark orange one sat in my closet of departing bags for a while, but I might just add it back to the collection. Henri Bendel Waldorf satchel in a color called Safari. I wish I had fresh flowers for this pic, but we haven't been to the grocery store in ages (that's where I get my flower bouquets.)

Beautiful bag!
You could classify it as light taupe too…it’s where you best think it fits.

Thanks! I agree it could be light taupe too -- this color seems to fit into more than one color group. Of the trio, this one is my most used bag (used more than the blue and orange satchels), which speaks to the versatility of this color.

Nice to read your update! Sounds like you've done a great job of sorting through and letting go of things that are not working for you. I am glad to hear that your work stress levels have reduced -- it must be a relief! Your new jewelry pieces sound lovely and classic. I have a dainty pair of diamond hoops in white gold that I like to pair with my tennis bracelet, but the bracelet is in yellow gold, and since I prefer to not mix metals, I have to figure out what to do about it. Maybe I will have to look into getting a pair of hoops in yellow gold at some point to match the bracelet. Would love to hear about the jewelry pieces you're eyeing, if you're comfortable sharing, and the new LV spring bag!

I'm looking for a crossbody bag too, but in no rush. Ideally something in softer leather with a top zip closure and no chain strap. Something more suited for travel, or a day around the city kind of thing. Something like the Celine trio, but I don't want a trio (three zips are too much!)

Circling back to the jean conversation, I watched a video about hem lengths by Your Guide To Style, and she did a nice job of side by side comparisons of straight leg and other styles. Not affiliated in any way. I don't know how to post a link but if you're interested, you can type the name of the channel in the youtube search bar and click on her videos to find it. In one of the examples she showed, I actually liked how the straight leg jean looked uncropped versus cropped.

You can ask a jeweler to rhodium plate your yellow gold pieces. It will have to be redone at some point, but lasts a long time. If it gives you more wear out of an item, it is totally worth it!

I actually like yellow gold more than white gold though -- I realize I forgot to say that in my earlier post! The bracelet is a bit loose for me so I am planning to take it in to the jeweler so will ask for ideas when I do that. Seems like more people like white gold than yellow these days.

I much prefer the Vegas boutiques to the DC one. SAs are more helpful, for one thing! Stock is hit or miss there, too, but I find it better in Vegas than in DC. And not just at Hermes…

Agreed, in my past experience, most designer shops in Vegas have good stock. I may now be going to Vegas in August, if so it will be fun to stop by. I never thought I would get hooked on scarves, but I watched a video on styling them and am now already stalking my next one.

Congrats on all your cleaning out of stuff! What LV bag are you looking at?

Hi @Purses & Perfumes, Thank you so much for your interest in the new pieces I’ve added to my collection! I don’t mind sharing. So few of my family and friends have an interest in bags and accessories that it’s great to have so many like-minded souls here.

First up is the Louis Vuitton Croisette in Damier Azure. I’ve been wanting a carefree, light-colored summer bag and this fit the bill! My lovely CA helped me accessorize it with a fun bandeau. I’m just shy of 5’6” for reference (the strap is not adjustable, which is a pet peeve of mine, but the length on this is good for me). And even though I didn’t purchase anything from the Kusama collaboration, my CA loved that the bear in my avatar is sporting a Louis Vuitton ribbon, so she gave Bear some goodies from the packaging for that collection so he can accessorize, too.

I also purchased a Chanel card case in pink; I’ve been on a pink kick.

I did fulfill a few of my jewelry wish list items. I’ve been wanting the Hermes Farandole pendant in rose gold, but I read so often on this site that H jewelry doesn’t hold its value, so I was skeptical about purchasing. However, I also learned from this site that H fine jewelry is a pathway to a quota bag and women often flip what they buy on resale sites, often without ever wearing the item. Enter Yoogi’s Closet, where I was able to secure this $2K pendant for $1,100 and I had a discount code for an extra $75 off. It came with the box, ribbon, shopping bag, copy of the receipt (bought in Texas in July 2022) and receipt holder, and was in boutique condition. Score!

I’ve also been wanting a piece from the Bulgari Serpenti line, but I wasn’t sure how I felt about the full snake. I saw online that there’s a band version without the head and tail, and I loved it when I tried it on, so purchased it. This is also rose gold.

My Burberry SA moved over to Cartier last year. Yes, that’s super dangerous for me! Luckily he (like most of my SAs/CAs) is located in Las Vegas and we only go there once, or twice a year. I save up most of my luxury shopping for those vacations; most of the pieces here were bought on our most recent trip. After spending about two hours chatting and trying on all sorts of fun pieces, I settled on the Trinity ring, which has one band each of yellow, white and rose gold. I was actually surprised at how smooth it is to roll on and off.

To continue with my pink theme, I purchased the Tiffany Mini Double Heart Tag pendant in silver. This piece has been discontinued, but is still available for purchase. The first SA I asked (Bellagio Las Vegas location) couldn’t seem to be bothered, so I tried next door at Forum Shops and they had one (plus that SA was super helpful).

There are still some items on my wish list for future visits, all from Louis Vuitton. One is a ring, while the other two are essentially small trunks that I would use as display pieces. The trunks also come with red and beige interiors. Maybe some day!

I’m with you on three pouches being too much! My preference has always been an open concept, if you will, with zip and/or open pockets; the Croisette has just one interior open pocket. It’s not leather, but if you like canvas… Not to enable, or anything! Are you looking for structured, or slouchy?

On jeans, it took me a long time to embrace the skinny trend and I’m now having a hard time going back! I do miss the styles from the aughts, though, where jeans were long and bootcut. Pants, too. I had a couple of great suits. Low-rise, which was really popular then, never worked for me as a short-waisted pear, but I do still love a mid-rise.

Vegas has three H boutiques, so you’ll have options if you go! They all have different stock, too, which is a good reason to hit up all three. Are there any other designs that caught your attention? I find the website doesn’t do them justice, so it’s great to see them in person.

A photo should be in the post just below yours, but I got the Croisette in Damier Azure. I liked it on the website, but often don’t like bags once I see them in person, so was pleasantly surprised this one worked for me. I wanted something light, carefree and easy, so am happy with this purchase.

Oh wow, fabulous goodies! I love every single one of your choices! As a fan of structured top handle bags, I have long admired the Croisette, and it looks perfect on you. Also love your bracelet stack in the mod shot of the Croisette! And awww, how sweet that your bear got some goodies. What a sweet SA!

That's a great deal on the Farandole pendant! I have eyed their bracelets off and on (haven't tried them on), and love that the styles are easy to put on and take off. Good to know that the resale sites are a good place to look for them; thanks for the info. Love the Trinity ring and the Serpenti ring, both perfection, and the pretty pink goodies.

I was thinking slightly slouchy leather for my crossbody bag. The Croisette is more on the structured side, but I might just have to take a trip to the store to try it on. I think it's also available in damier ebene, if I am not mistaken.
As for jeans, from what I can see, bootcut and flare styles are trending now too, alongside straight leg styles. I prefer a mid rise over high rise too, but yeah, I am happy to have these other styles trending (although I will still wear skinnies with tall boots in winter).

Thank you on all the lovely comments! The bracelet stack is the Lagos Caviar Rope Station Bracelet, the David Yurman Madison Chain Bracelet and the Return to Tiffany Heart Tag Bracelet (the beads are silver, but the heart is some discontinued metal they used called rubedo, which is gold in color); I wear this trio a lot!

H bracelets are great, too. Are you considering fashion bracelets, or something from their fine jewelry line? I have several of their Click bracelets and love them.

Good memory on the Croisette! Yes, it also comes in Damier Ebene. Truth be told, I prefer DE over DA, but that would have defeated my desire for a light-colored neutral that I could wear in the spring/summer. It was hard to resist, though.

Do you have a go-to jeans brand? I used to love the LOFT curvy fit, but the newer versions have too much stretch and the waist is too high for me. I’m carefully taking care of the ones I have since I have no idea what I could replace them with. Would love some recommendations if you have them!

For some reason your description made me think of this bag. Not designer, but I’ve always been intrigued by how simple and straightforward it is. They have a smaller version also that would be a little closer to the Celine Trio in scale.
