2023 Resolution: Shopping my Own Bags and SLG Collection

TPF may earn a commission from merchant affiliate
links, including eBay, Amazon, and others

A long standing tradition in this thread is to remind ourselves of how wonderful our own collections are by showcasing them. We can see how far we have come, collection wise, and we reminded that we have all (or most of) what we need making it easier to shop our own closets.

• New theme weeks start each Sunday

• Don’t jump ahead but, if you miss a week, please do show your bags “late”.

• Show bags individually or in a group

• You do NOT have to wear the bags that week

• For added fun, show old pictures from previous years to demonstrate how you have curated it over time.

• This is completely voluntary. There is no pressure to post at any time.

So what are the showcases? In the Fall, we group our bags by makers! Feel free to show bags, small leather goods, or however it is easiest to organize!

My black bag collection (at least some of it).
Black was my default neutral for the longest time. Even now, although I may stray to other colors, I always eventually come back to black.

Ferragamo Vara Bow bag. I usually don’t like woven leather or bows, but something about them together in this bag I just love.

Coach Chaise, the small crossbody I didn’t know I needed until I bought it. Used it quite a bit last year. Plain black Coach Rogue, the one Rogue I didn’t want yet it’s the one I use the most.
Wow, I'm in love with those Ferragamos!

L to R: MJ tote in jacquard, MJ tote in denim patchwork, black leather MJ tote. I know they’re not everyone’s cup of tea, but I love mine and use them all the time.

Love that Vara…every bit as pretty and ladylike as a Lady Dior, but less “precious”

Had some (online) store credit that I had to use or lose, and got this lovely Olivia hobo from Khaite.

 both!

Well done on store credit being put to good use, on-trend (twice-over) and a total classic style too. And it's black. I hate getting stuck with store credit even at H. The only place I don't mind is Gucci because I know they'll always be something.

For those of you that have experience with this kind of leather, I could use some feedback on it.
I have a milestone birthday later this year. And I don’t want a bag. I want a BAG! This Mark Cross Madeline has caught my eye.

The exterior leather is listed as 100% Dover box calfskin, the interior is red nappa leather.
Is this a delicate leather? Easy to scratch? Sensitive to water? Other issues?
Thanks in advance for any insights.

The bag is so smart, with a little 'hidden' drama. I think it will be most perfect milestone bag. Totally up my alley too. If it's like H Box it's polished and rolled leather, a treatment that was supposed to improve durability of leather.

Before you buy, just ask what MC's after-market maintenance policy is. Once in a while it's good to have the bag cleaned and conditioned by professionals, it would be even better if it were in-house.

Joseph Box was a cordwainer (shoemaker) in London that served the British Court mid-19C (the Sly Co was renamed Joseph Box 1862). One of the reasons why so many vintage Hermes bags exists today is because the leather builds a patina that itself protects the leather. A pair of boots from 130 years ago (co later called Box Kinghams) are at the V&A museum in London.

The reason why Hermes can use the trademark name 'Box' in terms of naming/marketing the heritage leather is Box Kinghams was eventually bought by Gundry & Sons (I think 1920s) and then John Lobb in the 1950s, Hermes in turn bought John Lobb in 1976 therefore Hermes now basically own all the companies' archives and 'recipes'.

Thanks, hadn’t thought about after care service.

Ha. I love zippers. (Of course they must move smoothly, have an easy-to-find pull, and not be in complicated-to-reach places.).

Looking at my bags, all of my daytime bags have zippers. They all also hold together pretty well even unzipped, but I am the mistress of accidentally turning my bag upside-down, so zippers are a lifesaver.

My evening/event bags are a random mix of press-release, snap, magnetic, kisslock, drawstring, turnlock, and one zipper - on the fur muff with convenient zippered compartment. I guess in bags carried for pure prettiness I'm more forgiving. Or they're tiny and if I do dump them upside-down I have less to pick up.
For zippers that are tough, use wax paper and rub it along the inside and outside of the zipper. It makes a huge difference.
