Traveling has most influenced my style. The women in large metropolitan cities (e.g., New York, Tokyo, Sydney) generally dress much better and are definitely more cosmopolitan. I get great styling tips just from watching them. My head was practically spinning in Paris---the women there were the most stylish I'd ever seen.

I typically wear a dress everyday and very rarely wear shorts or jeans. If I wear jeans, they're always dark wash with a blouse, never a t-shirt. I don't wear slippers outside the house (I live in Hawaii. "Flip flops" is the more common term.).

I love scarves, but I only wear them when traveling because it's just a little uncomfortable to wear them in Hawaii.
Very interesting! I'd have to agree that travel has also influenced me. (And I'm super jealous that you live in HA)

I'm a dress girl too! They are the best of everything - sooooo easy and immediately chic.

Massaccesi Soulmate, my largest handbag. I am done with large handbags, but I'm keeping this one because the leather is so gorgeous. It's quite heavy with my things inside.

What's this color called?

The scarf was fab and was tempted too but I already have the most beautiful McQueen chiffon seasonal scarf. Brilliant bag too and so inexpensive

The bag is a great purchase!

That's a great coat papertiger. Love the McQueen tote.. is it comprised of flora? I've always wondered about all the skulls, his trademark..but do you know why!

Yes, all floral. I have the Koi Carp and floral chiffon seasonal scarf that goes well with this bag in Summer. The normal skull scarves are much flimsier material but mine is on par with H and my Chanel.

They explained MQ's relationship with skulls by his observation that between life and death there is a very fine line (if a line at all). At the Savage exhibition we were greeted by a projection of McQueen transmuting into skull (if I remember rightly). I have plenty of McQueen RTW, from before and after 2000 (when Gucci Group/Kering took over the running of the company) and at Givenchy Couture. The brand only came to become synonymous with everything skull later, though there was always an obsession with death, decay and 'remnants' of the corpse man and 'beast'.

As I was getting dressed today, I thought about how I physically look nothing like my mother and that her fashion sense has had only the barest influence on my style - we both tend toward the feminine but have veeeery different takes on that. In contrast, my daughter is almost a literal physical mini me and her style is 90% reflective of mine - with twists for her younger age and at times a slightly sportier approach.

That led me to wonder... if my mom didn't influence my taste and style, who / what did? It wasn't friends or relatives or even the people I know. It seems to be an amalgam of media inputs - mostly fashion magazines and fashion coverage (runway shows) but also other pop images like pictures of celebrities my mom adored such as Grace Kelly to selfies from current fashion bloggers. From that mix, I think I adopted my personal style as a way to communicate who I am. It's like my packaging. I picked the approach that I think says "me".

So, my question for everyone today is: Who or what has most influenced your taste and style? And is that approach most reflective of your personality, your career choice, your life stage, your culture or perhaps something else?

I'm not sure. Someone once described my style as "somewhere between a Gustav Klimt and Francis Bacon painting" (both I admire greatly, though I don't see Bacon in my style as his figures are usually nude so I took it to mean bravery LOL perhaps he meant grotesque). I love the lines of the 30s movies, the easy glamour of the sweater girls and pencil skirts of the late 50s / early 1960s and the full-on magnetism of 1968-73 high-fashion. I can't say any one person though.

I've had to put London on hold for now. Apparently most of my family will be coming here throughout the year! Haha.

If you could go shopping and sightseeing elsewhere in the world, where would you go?

(Where should I take my pocket friends this year?)
I actually don't do a lot of "brand" shopping when I travel, so take my answer with a grain of salt, but my pick is Florence, Italy. It's so stunning, and there's so much history there with plenty to do and explore. I'm an art and architecture lover, so the whole city is eye candy. I'm a terrible photographer (as evidenced on this thread, haha), but nearly all of my trip pictures were gorgeous. Florence is known for its leather, so I got some very pretty bags and my husband got a belt that still looks nearly new despite him wearing it every day.

Plus it's wine country. :-D

This is fascinating. Thank you for sharing.

Spark,

My style and taste I got at early age from the women I'm my family. My paternal grandmother worked at Saks so needless to say I've literally been dressing in Saks since I was baby. My mom and her sisters had great style so that just naturally translated to me. I live by rule better to show up overdressed than under dressed when going out. My personal style is reflective of personality, culture and life stage.

Paris is my favorite city......I would say Italy as I haven't been there yet
