Off the topic, but I remember, when Costco or was it Sams? was selling fake Prada purses and my sister got a letter from Costco saying if she ever purchase Prada from Costco, to bring it in to Costco for refund. This was years back and apparently, Costco was not aware of purses not being authentic.

I hope you are able to get everything taken care of to your liking but I have to say I don't care how much I loved the style of the ring/great deal, etc. it would be going back with a request for full purchase price return. That is horrible from every angle you look at it. Good luck!!

It's a little gadget that you touch to the diamond and it can tell what the material is, diamond, cz, other. Usually by heating the stone. They come in various varieties, and I do. I tested everything of mine, and if I were ever to go near a pawn shop (or apparently a chain now) I'd be testing everything.

How awful, Ghost! I've never shopped there and will never set foot in that store!
Do you have a GIA report on the other stones in your ring? I'd wonder if that report would be accurate, too.

I do not have a report on the setting I purchased. It was just a setting with small diamonds throughout in shared prongs. It was purchased at a Zales Outlet store and I received 35% off..I was an excellent deal at a cost price. It is not the rings fault...LOL~ Simply someone beat up my ring and committed fraud. My personal jeweler checked every diamond on the ring after finding the one screwball. I do have a report on my new diamond that is being put on as well as laser inscription of the report #...Thank Gawd!

It's not just Zales. I purchased a necklace at Macy's in 1995 and just scrapped it for the gold--half the stones were CZ's. It really seems like buyer beware these days.

Horrible!!! Years later...that is horrific! I am so sorry for you~ I have a horror story about Macys too...I will share in a bit as I have to go to soccer practice. :p

Dear, please update us. This is the horrible nightmare of me not wanting to take my jewelry fixed anywhere, sometimes I have my own doubts even from the place I got it from, your story is one of the reasons why. I was at a mall jewelry store with a friend and looking at their stuff and they offered to clean my ring, I said no thank you.

Oh, I had no idea about BBB wanting people paying for top rating. That's trouble right there in of it itself! How discouraging!

Again, I'm sure it's a local thing done by some crooks that work for Zales, and Zales is not aware of it. It'd be good to write to Regional, local and Central Zales.

Funny~ I just called Zales as I did not get a call back. I asked to speak to the manager and she said she was it. It was NOT the same person I spoke to 2 days ago and the woman who I was currently speaking with said she was the only manger for 13 years! ????? Crazy!

So I had to tell the story all over again, as nothing had been done about it obviously. She told me to bring it in...I said "sorry but I will never be bringing my ring back into Zales again".

talk soon...late for soccer!

I wonder if one could do that before buying in a jewelry store, or would they go ballistic?

I bought a cheap kid's microscope awhile back, so I could determine if my rubies were fracture-filled or not (the set I bought for my birthday in July). They are natural (may be heat-treated, though, which is very common now), and don't appear to be fracture-filled. With a microscope (I paid only $40 for it!) and a few good books on gemology/good websites w/pics, you can learn a lot about your gems. It's actually quite fun. For example, you can sometimes tell the origin of a gemstone by the unique inclusions that are not visible to the naked eye.

The only problem with a standard scientific microscope is that it's not made to hold gems/jewelry under the lens. I found I had to do some creative masking-taping to a glass slide, and lots of pushing the slide around under the lens to get the pieces situated.

Don't even bother with the BBB. They called us wanting us to pay for a top rating. We've never had a complaint. Crooks. People can buy their high ratings.

If you can prove it, call your states Attorney General. Call the Federal Trade Commission. If Zales committed fraud its huge, since they are a national company.

That's what I also recommended. I think it's the best option with this.

An even better way to deal with consumer fraud/complaints/credit card company complaints, in my experience, is to contact your local county Dept. of Weights and Measures. It's a FREE (unlike BBB), little-known way to get consumer issues taken care of, and free of charge. I've used it several times. Each time, I submitted, in writing (you may be able to do this via email), my complaint. They just take care of dealign with the merchant, etc., and then, when it's resolved, send you a letter telling you so. They may need to contact you for more info, thoguh that's neever happened in my case. When they were finished with my case, I always sent them a thank-you letter--you don't need to, but it would be a nice touch.

I hope you get this resolved in your favor!

I should have added to the title of the agency: Office of the Attorney General. Dept. of Weights and Measures. Sorry!

^^ thanks so much! I supposed to fax the repair bill to the store tomorrow. They are then to send me a money order to pay for the service.

At least maybe this thread will help some people "check" their diamonds before purchasing an item. I may invest in one of those diamond checker things.

I have never bought an item without a tester being used. Either by myself or a jeweler. If a jeweler has a cow about it, then I won't be buying that item.
Ame do you do this at the store? Bring your diamond tester and all? I mean, I need to take you with me diamond shopping!;)

I do and I have. I also loupe the hell out of my stuff and fakes generally are pretty obvious under magnification. So if I don't bring it with me, I do it when I get home. So far so good.
