I really hope for his sake that the devil in him hasn't won. I thought it was great that he entered the rehab very quietly to beat his addiction, but now with the relapse, it's going to be even harder on him.

Zac Efron 'Bodyguard' Claims Zac Saved My Life

EXCLUSIVE

Zac Efron
was a hero who risked his own life to save the life of his "bodyguard" -- so claims the bodyguard.

We spoke to the "bodyguard" who says he and Zac were "cruising" around downtown L.A. Sunday at 12:30 AM, when they suddenly ran out of gas and rolled to a stop at the bottom of a downtown L.A. off-ramp.

Later in our conversation, the man -- we agreed not to use his name -- said it wasn't so much "cruising" as it was going to a restaurant in Little Tokyo in the downtown area.

TMZ broke the story ... Zac told cops they had run out of gas and for some reason threw a bottle out of the car which shattered and angered some nearby transients. Zac claimed the transients attacked the man and as Zac went to help him a transient viciously struck Zac in the face.

He tells us ... the transients actually went after him with "a spear" -- like a shank -- and stabbed him in the face, stomach and chest. He says Zac then got out of the car and swung a vodka bottle at the transients to fend off the attack. He says Zac actually thwarted the attack and saved his life.

So the man says the bottle Zac claimed to have thrown out the window wasn't really thrown at all. He says Zac used it as a weapon during the attack.

BTW ... we checked, and the "bodyguard" has a criminal record for drugs and violence.

Zac Efron 'Obviously Intoxicated' After Downtown L.A. Brawl: Report

Zac Efron Punched During Brawl in Downtown L.A.: Report

zac-efron-300.jpg

Zac Efron was punched in the mouth Sunday night during an altercation with a group of homeless people in downtown Los Angeles after the actor and a bodyguard ran out of gas, TMZ reports.

No one was arrested in the incident, as police believe the fighting was mutual while the actor waited for a tow truck, according to TMZ. Los Angeles Police Department officials contacted by PEOPLE say they have no record of the incident.

The That Awkward Moment star, 26, was "obviously intoxicated," a source told TMZ. His rep has not yet commented.

Sources close to the actor, who told fans at the SXSW Film Festival premiere of his new movie Neighbors on March 8 that he feels "blessed", say that Efron has worked hard at staying sober since a stint in rehab last spring.

"He has temptations," an industry source who has spent time with Efron told PEOPLE.

Efron himself has told friends that recovery is "not easy." When he broke his jaw this past November and had to have his mouth wired shut, insisting he had slipped on a puddle at home, some worried he could be having a post-rehab relapse. Efron vehemently denied rumors that partying caused the Nov. 11 injury.

"He cut most everyone out of his life who were part of the party scene," a source in his circle told PEOPLE.

Friends say Efron has been focused on reading scripts, working out, going to 12-step meetings and honing a new support system.

"He's made a remarkable effort to straighten up and concentrate on staying that way," an Efron pal said. "He wants to be healthy."

While at SXSW, a low-key Efron promoted Neighbors at a Facebook Live event alongside co-stars Seth Rogen, Dave Franco and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and mingled with the crowd at the film's fraternity-themed afterparty, but insisted at a later event that his favorite beer was nonalcoholic O'Doul's.

"It was an interesting year," he said in January. "The best part of it was being able to reflect upon that experience and realize how much I have learned about myself – and the kind of man I want to be."

It's really very hard to beat an alcohol/drug habit and easy to convince yourself you can go here and hang out with this or that person and it won't be a problem and that you don't need to keep up with your counseling and meetings etc.

Hopefully this wakes him up and he gets back into treatment.

The suggestions for sobriety are the same for him as they are for the average person with drug/alcohol problems. He needs to hang out with healthy people and not go to sketchy places. He's sabotaging any chance at recovery when he does this stuff. And in denial to be telling everyone he's sober when he's not. I think he needs some long-term help. I don't believe their story for a second.

I hope a girlfriend can do him some good, she's a cutie! :)

What a dapper couple! Zac Efron and rumored girlfriend Halston Sage cuddle up at Neighbors premiere

They are reported to be 'an item' after meeting on the set of their new movie Neighbors.

And Zac Efron and Halston Sage certainly looked rather cosy as they cuddled up on the red carpet for a photo at the film's premiere in Westwood, Los Angeles, on Monday night.

Despite arriving separately, the 26-year-old High school Musical star happily wrapped his arm around Halston, 20 during a group shot.

Stand by your man: Zac Efron looked dapper at the Neighbors premiere in Los Angeles in a three piece grey suit and black tie, as he cuddled up to reported girlfriend Halston Sage for a group photo

Zac looked particularly dapper in a three piece grey suit, black tie and white shirt, while his rumoured girlfriend sorted a strapless black lacy midi-dress and strappy sandals.

The new film should hopefully prove a turning point for Efron who spent time in rehab after struggling alcoholism and substance abuse last year and recently got into a scuffle on Skid Row.

Halston, who was seen flirting with Efron at a Los Angeles Lakers basketball game earlier this month, has apparently already helped him through a tough time.

A source told E! News: 'They are definitely an item. They were seeing each other a bit during filming of their movie together and ever since he went to rehab they got a lot closer.'
'Her friends love him and say he is so sweet,' the insider added. 'He's really good to her.'

The pair joined co-stars Seth Rogen and Dave Franco on the red carpet, with the Superbad star happily signing autographs before the screening.

'It's a never-ending struggle': Zac Efron opens up about drug and alcohol addiction, reveals he has joined AA and is in therapy

He shocked his fans when he was admitted to rehab for alleged cocaine addiction in 2013 but Zac Efron, 26, insists he has gotten his life back on track.
The once squeaky clean High School Musical star had two rehab stints last year in order to deal with his addictions and although he was involved in a brawl in LA's notorious drugs mecca Skid Row just last month, Efron says he has things under control and is now in Alcoholics Anonymous and seeing a therapist.
Speaking about therapy, he told the Hollywood Reporter: 'I just started going. And I think it's changed my life. I'm much more comfortable in my own skin. Things are so much easier now.'
But he added: 'It's a never-ending struggle.'

Never ending struggle: Zac Efron says he has gotten life back on track following drug and alcohol addiction and is now in AA and therapy

While Zac did not go into details, he acknowledged his drug taking to THR and added: 'I was drinking a lot, way too much.
'It's never one specific thing. I mean, you're in your 20s, single, going through life in Hollywood, you know? Everything is thrown at you.'
And despite the drama of the past year, Zac doesn't have any regrets.
'I wouldn't take anything back,' he told the publication. 'I needed to learn everything I did. But it was an interesting journey, to say the least.'
One notable incident which occurred last month saw Zac and a friend involved in an altercation with a homeless man in a sketchy area of Downtown LA, known to be frequented by drug abusers.

Troubled past: Zac insists therapy and AA meetings are helping him to put his addictions behind him

Despite fears he was in the area to purchase narcotics, Zac - who lives in Los Feliz with his 22-year-old brother Dylan - is adamant it was simply a case of wrong place, wrong time.
'I had a friend come pick me up late at night - we were looking for a place Downtown to get a bite and catch up.
'We were having trouble finding somewhere - a lot of places were closed - and the car ran out of gas off the 110. It was ridiculous. We had to pull over, and I called Uber.
'A homeless guy, or vagrant, tapped on the driver's-side window. Before I knew it, he [the friend] was out of the car, and they started fighting.

First sighting: This was the first picture of Zac following his mysterious attack near Los Angeles' Skid Row last month

'I saw that [the homeless man] was carrying some sort of a knife, or shank, and I got out of the car to disarm him. At some point, he dropped the knife, and I got hit pretty hard in the face - and almost instantly the police were there to break up the fight. [It was] the most terrifying moment in my life.'
Zac's version has subtle differences to those reported by TMZ after the incident.
The 'friend' was identified by the gossip site as his bodyguard who claimed Zac 'got out of the car and swung a vodka bottle at the transients [rather than just one homeless man] to fend off the attack, Zac actually thwarted the attack and saved his life.'

Happy and healthy: Zac says he has never felt better and blames overwork for many of his problems last year

However, after the interview TMZ later alleged Zac's bodyguard is a convicted drug dealer, and was not injured in the attack despite claiming that he was.
It's a strange area to find an affluent actor in; Skid Row is the last train stop in the U.S for those travelling west and became a makeshift community for indigents from all over America.
Although attempts at cleaning up the area and helping those in need are in progress, it's still a deprived area filled with drugs, violence and poverty.
In the THR interview, Zac blamed work for the drama in his personal life.

Clean cut: Zac shot to fame in High School Musical but his clean cut reputation took a hit after it was revealed he had been to rehab

'I had done films back-to-back-to-back. I was burnt out. Work started to become the reason to go anywhere, the reason to talk to anybody... my hobbies went out the window.'
He didn't go into details but Efron hinted at trouble with his parents in the past, saying: ' I've turned a corner with them in a big way, and we're coming back into each other's lives. I had a great dad; my parents were fantastic.'
He is also trying to reconnect with friend and insisted he is now 'happier and healthier' than ever.

Hard at it: Despite blaming his troubles on work, Zac has been keeping busy promoting his new movie Neighbors
