The first designer bag I owed was a Dooney and Bourke domed satchel in peach signature fabric that I found at Marshall's. I didn't know enough to know, but it was missing its shoulder strap. I was really proud to carry it. Have since given it away as other designers took up space.

The first designer bag I ever coveted, the one that made me enter the purse worlds, was the Go Bananas bag by Isabella Fiore. The newspaper did an article on novelty bags and mistaken called it the Beaded Monkey and said it was pink. Their pic even made it look pink. When I finally tracked it down, I was shocked it was curry colored and, horrors, $350! Lol. I don't know how I began to see $350 as an average bag price since then, but I did. That bag out of my then college budget, I found others, but did later buy one off ebay. It is no longer the IT bag, but I do still carry it.

A Coach Satchel from the Outlet! After buying a fake that I absolutely loved (don't tell anyone I carried a fake for awhile!) I had to get the real thing. I finally did when I bought my bag from the outlet one Christmas. I actually hated it! Satchels are not the bag for me. I gave it to my SIL.

ETA: I didn't know my fake was a fake until I got it authenticated here. I actually saw the bag it was knocking off at the outlet but I didn't have the money to buy it. I really want a bag like that (I don't remember the name of it) but I think it'll be too small as I've moved on to humungous bags that can hold anything!

My first and only designer bag until now is the large 3.1. Phillip Lim Pashli Satchel in black. Bought it this summer and still love it. Now I'm planning to buy the Coach Borough bag, but I can't find a European online shop which sells it or even the price in Euro.

I was in the no name, under $60, carry it til it was worn out category. Then I worked a 2 week job with a woman who was a purse lover and changed bags every day. I was astounded. The idea of moving my things from one bag to another daily was beyond my comprehension. But she got me interested.

Then a particular client came in to the office. She was a surgeon with about $1 mil in income a year--the kind of woman with a beautiful clothes and a Porsche convertible. She put her bag on the conference room table and I was transfixed. It was my first experience with my eyes recognizing quality.

I went straight to Nordstroms and looked at everything. My limit was about $250. I went on a Monsac, Brahmin, and Brighton binge. I liked the leather of the first two and the organization of the Brightons. I still have those bags and still love most of them (well not the fake croc Monsac but all the rest).

Years passed and lots of long hours at work I had slipped into my old ways of carrying a no name lambskin and snake bag everyday and it was getting worn out. I also needed a bigger bag. I was craving real croc and combed ebay. There was a $1700 bag I loved, but I thought no way will DH not have a heart attack over that. I figured I needed to keep it under $1,000 and under $500 would be better still.

I don't know why the Fendi spy bag popped into my head, but it did. It was a combination of I loved the secret compartments and the unique shape and the tales of buttery soft leather. Thought I could get one for about $600, but it just doesn't happen in black. I spent 3 months obsessing over them on ebay until I found the perfect black one for $1k. I was madly in love and wanted one of every color. After it came, it seemed a little big for me and I was initially into the love it too much to carry it. I had the "on to the next bag" reaction. Without searching for the spy bag, the thrill was gone. And coming to TPF had become a habit so I started reading random threads of interest.

Reading here, there was this wonderful thread, with much. Enough food for thought to keep my brain busy for a long time...

And this thread helped me think about function.

http://forum.purseblog.com/handbags...ollection-5-bags-every-girl-needs-646293.html

These threads taught me to train my eye to what I like and works for me, which turns out to be lady like structured bags for work and edgy less structured bags for non work. All in black, gray, or shades of purple. I figured this out by every time I read about some bag that someone loved, I looked up pictures of it and started a picture file that I study obsessively. That has been the best thing ever. That makes it more about the bag than the label.

Another thread that was formative was

Now I have a wish list that includes a number of designers. I am trying to go for a collection of 10-15 high end bags that I think I will know what I am getting into very well before I buy. I don't think I will make mistakes with the possible exception of greed, which I am fighting.

Hope this is helpful to you in deciding where to start.

I know I'm a latecomer, but the advice in the links provided will still surely ring true...I'm off to read them after I post this!

I carried a black Perlina bag during most of my 20's and when it eventually wore out (after 8 years or so, and a couple of reconditioning treatments courtesy of Nordstrom) I got another black Perlina! At the time, I thought spending over $100 was such a splurge but told myself if I carry the new one for another 8 years, the cost per wear is almost nothing.

When I finally ventured into experimenting with new bags, I went through Kathy Van Zeeland, Tignanello, Juicy Couture, B. Makowsky, Hobo International, Michael Kors and a few others very quickly, finding out that they just weren't my style.

I never "loved" any of my bags until I happened to stroll into a Brighton store and fell instantly in love with the "Femme Fatale Glam Pouch" in black leather with studs and crystals formed in the shape of a large heart. I still love this little bag and it will be mine forever. :)

Brahmin mock croc bags were the next phase I went through, although the "really love" shortly turned into just a "really like". They are wonderful beater bags in disguise though, as they still look new even without being babied.

Fast forward to 2013, the year I bought my first premier designer handbags: Balenciaga, Chanel and Hermès. I love them all, but the one that makes my heart pitter-patter the most is my Cassis All Leather Garden Party 30cm. I've had her since Christmas and am still in bag lust...haven't photographed her or carried her outside yet, I've just been admiring her in the mirror. :)

Not sure if relevant but I'm new to the realm of designer bags and am thinking of making the furla candy my first! Does anyone have opinions/ advice regarding it's longevity several years down the road? I'm mainly concerned that since it's a jelly bag after all and kind of 'statement bag'-ish I might not get to wear it much at all.

Do you all think it would remain a classic bag (since it has the shape of a speedy)& which colour would be more practical trend-wise? I am leaning towards the white with leather bottom but at the same time considering darker colours as well. Any input would be appreciated!

My first high-end bag was a Gucci (fabric logo and leather combo) hobo that was all the rage back then. After several years I lent it to my mom, who somehow broke the handle (I still can't believe it happened). That was the end to that bag. But it definitely started the obsession with purses. I remember it was around $600 back then, to me an enormous sum. Now I look back and think, only $600!
