I was in the no name, under $60, carry it til it was worn out category. Then I worked a 2 week job with a woman who was a purse lover and changed bags every day. I was astounded. The idea of moving my things from one bag to another daily was beyond my comprehension. But she got me interested.

Then a particular client came in to the office. She was a surgeon with about $1 mil in income a year--the kind of woman with a beautiful clothes and a Porsche convertible. She put her bag on the conference room table and I was transfixed. It was my first experience with my eyes recognizing quality.

I went straight to Nordstroms and looked at everything. My limit was about $250. I went on a Monsac, Brahmin, and Brighton binge. I liked the leather of the first two and the organization of the Brightons. I still have those bags and still love most of them (well not the fake croc Monsac but all the rest).

Years passed and lots of long hours at work I had slipped into my old ways of carrying a no name lambskin and snake bag everyday and it was getting worn out. I also needed a bigger bag. I was craving real croc and combed ebay. There was a $1700 bag I loved, but I thought no way will DH not have a heart attack over that. I figured I needed to keep it under $1,000 and under $500 would be better still.

I don't know why the Fendi spy bag popped into my head, but it did. It was a combination of I loved the secret compartments and the unique shape and the tales of buttery soft leather. Thought I could get one for about $600, but it just doesn't happen in black. I spent 3 months obsessing over them on ebay until I found the perfect black one for $1k. I was madly in love and wanted one of every color. After it came, it seemed a little big for me and I was initially into the love it too much to carry it. I had the "on to the next bag" reaction. Without searching for the spy bag, the thrill was gone. And coming to TPF had become a habit so I started reading random threads of interest.

Reading here, there was this wonderful thread, with much. Enough food for thought to keep my brain busy for a long time...

And this thread helped me think about function.

These threads taught me to train my eye to what I like and works for me, which turns out to be lady like structured bags for work and edgy less structured bags for non work. All in black, gray, or shades of purple. I figured this out by every time I read about some bag that someone loved, I looked up pictures of it and started a picture file that I study obsessively. That has been the best thing ever. That makes it more about the bag than the label.

Another thread that was formative was

Now I have a wish list that includes a number of designers. I am trying to go for a collection of 10-15 high end bags that I think I will know what I am getting into very well before I buy. I don't think I will make mistakes with the possible exception of greed, which I am fighting.

Hope this is helpful to you in deciding where to start.

What a great post... thanks for the links to all of the threads!! I'm off to read through them now :D

What was your first designer handbag (post a pic!)?
How did you decide what to buy?
Did you have your heart set on a designer? Or did you fall in love with a specific brand?

My first designer bag was a andrew marc bag I found at TJMaxx. It was on sale for $199 the leather on this bag was amzaing and the lining was so soft you felt like you were putting your hand into a cloud. I never even heard of andrew marc but I couldn't take my hands off this bag, I later found out that he's more well knowen for his leather jackets than handbags. I still have this bag to this day and love it just as much.

My second designer bag was a Coach hobo nylon bag(it didn't have the C's all over it or even really look like the typical coach handbag) I want to say it was also in the same price range. I expanded into a few more coach bags most of which have been given away to friends and family members.

High end designer bags my first was a Burberry, then a Balenciaga, then LV, PS, and Givenchy. I started out really liking Bbags but the more I go into them the more I became disapointed with the quality of them and I expanded to other brands. I originally signed up on TPF because I wanted to find out more info on Bottega veneta bags which I love. As much as I love them and the leather on them none of the styles really appeal to me or "fit" me.

While I do have certain brands I like more than anything I go for a bag that I love/feels right. When it comes to buying handbags I don't settle for something I kind of like if I feel like I have to sell it to myself it's going back.

I'm stuck!
Can't decide between LV, Gucci, or Balenciaga... all have so many beautiful options :S

Out of those 3 brands I'd probably go for the LV or Gucci for your first bag. Don't get me wrong I like Bbags but they show wear really quickly. Some of the colors have fading issues, the edges show wear really quickly, the tassels split or get damaged easily. If you go for a Bbag I'd say consider getting a used one made out of chevre (07 or earlier) as they are IMO better quality leather and more durable. My LV's look as new as the day I got them the only wear they have is the leather patina and on my azur galleria I have some light color transfer on the back of it. Which is kind of expected since it's white. I don't own any gucci bags but I know people who do and they look great and are very well made.

Good to know. That is a really helpful piece of information. Thanks.

NP the holiday hamitlon bags are also made out of chevre but very limited colors and styles. The one color I would have splurged on chestnut was not ordered by the boutiques and the only store I know of in the US that did get teh color I want is barneys and I have issues buying bags sight unseen lol. The hamilton bags have the mini GH on them and the leather is pebbled which some ppl do not like.

Mine was a Juicy Couture when they were the 'in' thing when I was younger. Now it's nothing but Louis Vuittons. I can't get enough of them! I'll never stop collecting I dont think.

My first designer handbag is LV Damier Hampstead. I bought it because I love being treated like princess and the sales person didn't force me to buy one, she asked me to think about it and come back anytime. I decided to get Sarah wallet too in the end. Yeay! Oh this one at Collin St. Melbourne :)

Mine is a ferregamo black patent Boston. It's so practical. I sometimes can't believe how much I can fit in the bag! My second is a ferregamo Sofia in fusia, such ad lovely color, but I got it slightly too small - can't fit iPad in it :(

My first ever named bag was a Betsey Johnson messenger bag.

It was so ugly and I dont know what I was thinking!! I still have a pic of it on my PC.

Here is the offending item.....
