Woody Allen Responds to Dylan Farrow's Sexual Abuse Claims

On Saturday, Nicholas Kristof's blog at the New York Times published an open letter by Dylan Farrow, the adoptive daughter of celebrated filmmaker Woody Allen. The letter describes, in horrifying detail, sexual assault she claims to have suffered at the hands of Allen—when she was seven years old. As Kristof notes, this is the first time that Farrow has written about this in public.

Woody Allen is a living testament to the way our society fails the survivors of sexual assault and abuse.

Allen's representatives did not immediately respond to Mother Jones' request for comment regarding the letter. I will update this post, if that changes.

Update: Allen's attorney Elkan Abramowitz sent Mother Jones the following statement on Sunday afternoon:

It is tragic that after 20 years a story engineered by a vengeful lover resurfaces after it was fully vetted and rejected by independent authorities. The one to blame for Dylan's distress is neither Dylan nor Woody Allen.

Update 2: Allen's publicist Leslee Dart emails the following on Sunday afternoon:

Mr. Allen has read the article and found it untrue and disgraceful. He will be responding very soon...At the time, a thorough investigation was conducted by court appointed independent experts. The experts concluded there was no credible evidence of molestation; that Dylan Farrow had an inability to distinguish between fantasy and reality; and that Dylan Farrow had likely been coached by her mother Mia Farrow. No charges were ever filed.

Accusations of the abuse surfaced in the early 1990s, shortly after the relationship between Allen and long-time girlfriend Mia Farrow ended after she discovered Allen had been having an affair with Soon-Yi Previn, the adopted daughter of Mia Farrow and composer/conductor André Previn. Allen denies the allegations, and has never been prosecuted in this case. Allen and his defenders say that Dylan was coached to make the allegations by Mia Farrow. Discussion of the alleged assaults was renewed following a recent tribute to Allen at the Golden Globe Awards.

Because aren't you the first one to talk about how stuff in the magazines, tabloids etc is all spin?

Surely you can tell the difference between Blake Lively leaving the Nespresso store with a huge Nespresso bag and the logo facing out, or Megan Fox in Hawaii, where she 'secretly' got married and the paps just happening upon her husband kissing her pregnant belly?

I'm talking about the '70s and onwards, when Mia was hugely popular, but doing some odd things. I remember how she was prone to hysterics and the newspapers wrote about things she did in public.

There's a huge difference between press actually reporting what happened and celebs staging photos and pretending to have candid photos taken… like Mimi just happening to get her perfectly photo-shopped bikini body picture taken, while frolicking on the beach…

Ronan Farrow has come out in support of his sister, Dylan, since she made claims of sexual abuse against her adoptive father, Woody Allen, in an open letter to The New York Times on Saturday.

But then I think back to the way Mia looked in the '60s, so pretty and waifish, with those big blue eyes and eventually short cropped blonde hair… and I realize he looks just like his mom. She did some bad plastic surgery at some point. But back then? Everyone wanted to look like her, she was so attractive.

When Ronan Farrow was younger he looked much more like his mother than he does now IMO. As he's gotten older the curve of his mouth and the way he smiles really reminds me of Sinatra. I also really want the rumour to be true, he's much cooler being the son of Frank Sinatra than being the son of Woody Allen.

Yeah there is always a chance that allegations are fabricated, but it's in incredibly poor taste to accuse an alleged child sexual abuse victim of lying, imo. Sends quite a message to others who have been abused by beloved public figures...

If she's lying, let Allen sue her... I will never defend the guy, he has enough money and power to do that himself. His history speaks for itself. If he wanted people to give him the benefit of the doubt, he should have lived a better life and not been a revolting lech with no conscience.

Well, it is trivialization at its finest. There is NO cross-correlation whatsoever between Mia Farrow/Frank Sinatra and Woody Allen/Soon Yi(sp?), there was NO child abuse/child manipulation/pedophilia involved, clearly you missed the point greatly.

And btw as messed up as he was also in his relationships with women, Frank Sinatra stayed loyal and threatened to send in his associates (read : Mafia) to break Allen's legs, but Mia Farrow told him not to do such a thing. But the uproar over the split with Allen had the media spiining things around and left Mia's image tarnished irretrievably. Because he is the "genius filmmaker" and Mia Farrow is the bitter woman... Oh.
Not only Mia Farrow has flaws and her relationship with Woddy Allen was a mess, it doesn't undermine by any means that Dylan Farrow was molested. However, Hollywood and the public simply seemed to ignore Mia Farrow "rantings" as that of a scorned woman going through a divorce and other bitterness.
So even if the public didn't initially believe Mia Farrow's accusations, the fact that Woody Allen married Mia's adopted daughter that he also had raised should be a red flag thus like or not, Woody Allen groomed that child into thinking it was ok to have such a twisted relationship and the he rationalized his actions by saying “The only thing unusual is that she's Mia's daughter. But she's an adopted daughter and a grown woman. I could have met her at a party or something." ...
So no, it's not a "fortunate coincidence" as some tried to rationalize it. Not only Woody Allen is sick for sure, but those that support and praise him are just beyond my understanding. So what if he has contributed to films, that doesn't give him the right to be above the law and deprive young children from their human dignity at the expense of his desires and other pulsions.

Generally speaking, people get it twisted when it's convenient. Under any other circumstances, people realize the obvious...artist put themselves into their work. But when they want to defend a pedophile, they want to claim that you can separate the art from the artist. So good on Dylan Farrow calling out those people.

Allen has had three wives: Harlene Rosen (1954–1959),*Louise Lasser*(1966–1970) and Soon-Yi Previn (1997–present). Though he had a 12-year romantic relationship with actress*Mia Farrow, the two never married. Allen also had romantic relationships with*Stacey Nelkin*and*Diane Keaton.



Mia Farrow

Around 1980, Allen began a relationship with actress*Mia Farrow, who had leading roles in most of his movies from 1982 to 1992. Farrow and Allen never married and kept separate homes.[112]*They jointly adopted two children, Dylan Farrow (who changed her name to Eliza and later to Malone)[113]and Moshe Farrow (known as Moses); they also had one biological child, Satchel Farrow (known asRonan Seamus Farrow). However, in a 2013 interview with*Vanity Fair, Farrow stated that Ronan could "possibly" be the biological child of her first husband*Frank Sinatra, with whom she claims to have "never really split up."[114]

Allen did not adopt any of Farrow's other family, including Soon-Yi Farrow Previn (adopted daughter of Farrow and*André Previn, now known as Soon-Yi Previn). After Allen and Farrow separated, a long public legal battle for the custody of their three children began. During the proceedings, Farrow alleged that Allen had sexually molested their adopted daughter Dylan, who was then seven years old. The judge eventually found that the sex abuse charges were inconclusive.[123]*In February 2014, Dylan Farrow repeated the allegations in an open letter published by*Nicholas Kristof, a friend of Mia Farrow, in*The New York Times.[124][125][126][127]Allen strongly denied the charges, calling them "untrue and disgraceful."[128][129]
