Will my Tiffany e-ring be big enough?

I would ask her whether she would like a big ring with high quality or pay the huge mark up for a smaller ring but Tiffany brand. If you buy from Christies or Sothebys auction houses, you know you are buying quality as it often includes the GIA report and mentions color, clarity, etc. A high quality is D or E color and cut at least a VS2.

Used to feel like you did. Was at their auctions in December. Most of the stone were over 7 cts & no bargains to be had. They now have a 25% buyers fee which doesn't help. If you are looking for a 30 ct D IF (they actually had one!), you'd probably do better here than Graff.

Diamonds with 'Tiffany standards' can be found many places.

I guess this is the part that I don't get. I mean, many of us can appreciate the blue box, but you're not wearing the box, you're wearing what's in it. Also, do people really come right out & say, "it's from Tiffany" when they are complimented on their ring? If they do, that would seem very odd to me. I have Tiffany jewelry that I've gotten compliments on and I would never blurt out where it came from. I guess I've never heard a single person say to me that there e ring is from Tiffany, which means that some of them may have rings from Tiffany, but they're not bragging about it.
I will say though that Tiffany's customer service is excellent and I have always been pleased with their quality :)

I can tell just by glancing at a e ring if its from Tiffany's.

See that's it. I know that a diamond is a diamond... but the *style of the setting* is worth paying for too IMHO. I looked at many many copies of the classic Tiffany setting and none of them were perfect. And to some people that just isn't an issue so no worries! But there's just something about it. Honestly... I don't tell many people (unless they ask) where mine is from ... I just love knowing that it's from there. :) I can't explain it. Mine is 1.26 and I definitely could have gotten a 1.5 + for the same money but to me, the gorgeous setting and knowing that it's well made and ethically sourced was worth it to me! It was a good trade-off. The prongs/knife edge are hard to get perfect (if that's the one you wanted to have imitated).

To be honest I walked into Tiffany's (to pick out my replacement ring) thinking a) we wouldn't be able to afford anything there and b) that I just wanted to see what the 6 prong setting looked like and have it made by an independent jeweler... I even had her researching Canadian diamonds. But I just FELL IN LOVE with the setting!! And I wanted it to be perfect. And the one I got is SO recognizable I just knew I'd know (and some people would know) that it was a copy. My friends are NOT into labels (I don't think any of them know what my Van Cleef jewelry is!) so for me it's so not about that. Mine ended up being a couple thousand more than if I'd had it made at my local jewelers (about 20% more I guess) but over the rest of my life of wearing it, I decided that it was worth it. And to me it's perfect! I love that it's from a design house that has history... that is romantic... that I can go in anytime and have it sparkled up for free... yes, I'm falling for the hype but I don't care! :)

I'm just trying to tell this adorable guy that if she's like me, she might like a smaller Tiffany's one... but if she'd rather have size, go elsewhere! :)

It IS excellent quality and amazing customer service... but above that, it's the design of the classic Tiffany ring though that I just can't describe - I couldn't find anyone who did it perfectly. I agree with another poster - you can tell. At least, you can tell it's beautifully made... my old ring had a bit of a "homemade" feel to it? I had an eternity band made for my set and it was so rough on the edges that it tortured my hands... My Tiffany's band is SO smooth and beautifully made I don't even feel it. I guess it depends on how good the jeweler is. And it also depends on the style you choose... personally I'm not sure I'd know a princess cut Tiffany's ring b/c I haven't studied them, but I could pick out a Classic Setting solitaire in a minute.

I shouldn't say I "brag" about it... because honestly I don't. I'm tickled pink inside that it's from Tiffany's but I pretty much keep it to myself and smile when I happen to look at it. IF someone asked me I'd tell them... but my friends are all quite modest and though they can certainly appreciate Tiffany's, it's so not an "issue". I certainly have NEVER volunteered the info... it's just not me. And I would NEVER tell anyone what it cost under any circumstances (it's not outrageous - mine is 1.26 - not small but not huge by TPF standards!). I guess I'm kind of the definition of their ad campaign, "She'll always know." :) I'm a Tiffany's girl!

I think when deciding what type of ring and where to buy it, you have to look at what type of other jewelry she is wearing on a regular basis. Is all or most of her jewelry from Tiffany? Is all or most of her jewelry real? Is her jewelry large and flashy for the most part or smaller? Is her style traditional or more contemporary?

If most of her jewelry is Tiffany and you know that is important to her, you probably should get it at Tiffany. If most of what she wears is smaller, than a smaller stone is probably fine. However, if she's more into the larger scale pieces than she probably won't like a small stone that is under a carat. I know I wouldn't like it, but then I also don't like Tiffany and wear a lot of costume jewelry that is large and flashy. I would not even care if my ring was fake as long as it looked decent, I just would not want it to be small. But that is just me, I think most other people don't feel that way.

OMG Vegas Long Legs a 30 ct D IF! It actually exists! Extreme eye candy.

Yes lots of places sell diamonds with 'tiffany standards' so it really boils down to 'does size count more than the designer label?'

Tiffany has a great return policy on engagement rings from my understanding. So buy what you can from Tiffany and then give her the choice of keeping it or getting a larger diamond. If you decide to purchase something else, stay away from Kays and look online at some reputable sites. Visit pricescope.com for an education.

Thank you for all of the replies so far! :smile1:

She wears jewelry from T&Co. every day. I haven't done much snooping through her jewelry box, but I believe she only has Tiffany jewelry. She mostly wears white gold necklaces and bracelets with different white gold earrings. Plus she has T&Co. things like an alarm clock, wine glasses, pens, etc. So I guess T&Co. it should be!

But another issue is that she already has a huge (1 to 2 carat) e-ring from T&Co. that her mom gave her. It is so big that she often snags it on things. So I know my e-ring will be smaller and therefore less awesome than a ring she got for free. :shame: I'm leaning towards the biggest rock I can get in F color for my budget (5k and I have been saving my pennies for some time). I don't care too much about the clarity because all of the rings I have seen are very nice. Her middle finger is smaller than my pinky, and she wears a size 5 ring. I actually put a size 5 0.61 carat on my pinky yesterday and it looked fine to me. I could not even get the ring on my pinky because size 5 is so small. I recently started my career, so I can get her something bigger in a few years.

I think it is very thougtful of you to ponder this question, but maybe you might just want to ask your gf what she would prefer, what cut diamond she would prefer and if she would want an engagement ring from Tiffany's.

I loved Tiffany jewelry and for my first engagement ring, received one from that store. I loved that he wanted to get a ring from Tiffany's but did wish that he consulted me first bc it was a very personal decision. Although I loved their jewelry, if you're financially strapped like he was at the time (i.e., he was a medical school student so didn't have much of an income), I would rather have chosen a good quality ring thru pricescope or bluenile and chosen my ring setting. Although the ring was pretty, for the same price, I could have gotten something much more stunning. The thing that is really special about Tiffany's is that they have a patent on their classic ring setting so if she loves that setting she won't find it anywhere else. However, you can find the same quality diamonds at a much lower price elsewhere (please don't go to Kays or any of the jewelry stores in the average mall). So maybe just consult with her as she'll be the one wearing it.

After my ex-fiance gave me the ring, I didn't have the heart to return it since he took such care to pick it out. I do wish that he had consulted me - it would have been fun to shop for it together.
By the way, my first engagement did not last and I gave the ring back.

Get her the Tiffany ring. It sounds like that will make her incredibly happy, and that's what matters.

My ring is not from Tiffany but my husband visited the boutique to see what they had to offer when he was ring shopping. He chose to custom design and purchase the ring elsewhere and I'm happy he did.

The ring you get her will be awesome because it is from you, so don't worry!

Just something to consider... Without going over your budget, WF has a .83 F/VS2 ideal cut diamond for approx $4k. That leaves enough left over for a very nice custom setting.... :graucho:
