Why does Bal store need drivers license & credit card copy?

The other day I placed a phone order from the Las Vegas Balenciaga store. In addition to filling out a form (on which I would not put my cc number to send it through e-mail, I gave it over the phone instead) they have asked me to fax copies of my drivers license and credit card.

Is this standard procedure? What do they do with this info? Do they retain it or destroy it?

The more I think about this it makes me very uncomfortable and I don't really want to send them copies of my DL & CC.

I think they only do that for phone orders to confirm that you're the owner of the credit card.. I doubt they keep it, they only need it to complete your order

They only do this the first time, at least at BalNY. It's totally normal.

All the bal boutiques do this. It is time saving in the long run to have your charge send information already in their system.
