Why Do People Buy Fake Designer Bags Or Fake Designer Anything?

The reality, imo, is that folks don't see it as stealing any more than some students don't find plagiarism or cheating on exams a problem. The idea of intellectual property just doesn't seem to click for some people.

I absolutely agree!
my sister in law purchased a fake logo fendi spy and a fake LV last year and she loves flaunting them, honestly, it makes me a little nauseous, the worst of it is that she bought ME fakes of the exact same 2 bags thinking i would be as excited as she was- i'm not about logos or brands, i'd rather let the design speak for itself, and i'd never disrespect a designer's work that way, i went to fashion school and it's the worst thing you can do to a designer - i've never carried either bag and just removed them from my closet 2 days ago, they were taking up precious space and are now going to good will!

the worst of it is, is that some of these fakes cost a pretty penny and you can easily snag a coach or d&b or other comparable quality brand for the same price on sale, and it's authentic. i really don't get it.

wait, the story gets worse, both my sister in law and i are lawyers - talk about no conception of intellectual property.... sigh! :shrugs:

I really don´t understand why people buy fakes. If you don´t want to spend so much money on a bag there are really nice no designer bags with good quality to reasonable prices. And if you are yearning for a designer bag you can save your money for it or try to get a used one, cause in m.o. buying a fake is a bad compromise, even if it looks like the original it never feels like it :smile1:

The market is flooded w/ counterfeit Balenciaga bags!!!
I'm on the Balenciaga authenticate this thread often, and there are many counterfeits posted. :cursing:

We are pretty good at reporting / exposing the seller and having the counterfeits removed from ebay.

There are also some photos of counterfeit bal bags in my guide/link in my signature.

Also I'm just totally floored that there are actually fake Bal bags out there! This is another on my wish list...probably the city bag. I thought only the more popular ones like coach and LV were fakes although after becomming a member of the tPf and hanging out in the Jimmy Choo threads (my latest obsession-choo's) I found out these are also being made as fakes!

Also thanks for the TJMaxx tip. I'm gonna be going there often to look for Bal bags!! Hopefully it will be real though! Anybody run into fakes at a store like this? LETS KEEP IT REAL!

Just a note:

It is ILLEGAL to sell counterfeits.

Although it is not illegal to purchase counterfeits, keep in mind that if you purchase a counterfeit, you are SUPPORTING organized crime - PERIOD.

I live in Vancouver, BC and I swear every second person on the street has a fake LV or Prada or Gucci and for those of us who actually spend the money on the real product, our statement is lost because those very people who spend $5 on a purse think my $500 purse is just like theirs...a fake! And when they ask you what "little market" you bought your wallet or purse at and you tell them its real, they laugh at you and actually don't believe you. Whatever.

Oh I hate that! That happens to me aswell.

My roommate thought it was "ok" to pay $80 for a fake bag, I told her that if she waits it out eventually she will be able to find a real one for a little over $100 (it's a coach bag).

But, most of my friends think it's perfectly find to carry fake bags, they don't see why it matters or how it hurts the purse business. I showed a few an article in Harpers, they have since changed their mind.

I think it's just a mentality though, some people think it's great steal, and honestly most people won't be able to tell it's not authentic unless they know the bag/designer so possibly they don't see the problem?

I have had friends buy from purse parties though and try to convince me they got this chanel purse for only $45! I don't always know what to say but a smile makes them feel fine :smile1:

she bought a fake coach bag for $80!!!! :wtf:
you can get a REAL coach bag at the outlets for less than $80!!!

wow.. i guess one way to convince your friend against buying fakes is to help her realized that she just got royally jipped..

Status, prices, style aside, it's a form of stealing. Fakes are a form of stealing someone else's styles and designs. Inspired is a different thing, and I don't care if someone likes an inspired bag...I might like one too. But outright fakes are illegal, and I think it's wrong to discuss whether it's okay to own one if they are illegal to sell. That, imo, is the end of the story: illegal to sell.

It's none of my business if someone wants to choose to spend their money on a fake bag. I find it silly when these people buy fake bags and try to convince everyone it's real.

I'm not going to get in an argument or try to convince someone to buy real bags because they can't tell me how to spend my money.

Some people say over and over "save up and buy a real handbag" but I've seen so many cases where people live beyond their means and purchase real handbags on credit. In these cases I think these people are better off buying a less expensive bag or even a fake if they want to.

I've seen wealthy women and celebs wearing fake bags so you'd be surprised how common and normal it is to carry fake bags.

i agree with u

I live in NYC, land of the fakest of fake bags. I've never bought a fake and never will; like most tPF'ers I highly prefer to own something authentic and well made at whatever pricepoint I can afford. I also disagree with the whole enterprise for moral and legal reason, but I also only buy bags I love.

I always laugh when someone I know who has a fake tells me she bought it because she "likes the style" but doesn't want to spend the money, as if she's be carrying that plastic piece of crap if it didn't have giant C's or LV's all over it. Oh please, my behind, you like the style. It's funny, then, that it's always the logo'ed bags that they happen to like the style of, huh?

If someone was just buying it for the style they could easily find a non-designer bag with the same shape in Macy's or JCP, etc. You can find something stylish at ANY price! NY & Co. has some nice bags from time to time, usually for $30! This is also why I have no problem with bags like Melie Bianco, because they change enough of the design as to remain similar to the inspiration, but they never completely replicate it or claim to be something they aren't, like real leather.

Last week I was at one of the nicer malls in NY, and I was in Coach looking for a gift for my gf. The girl ahead of me had to be about 28/29 and was wearing a shirt that said "I Know Your Bag Is Fake" and carrying......a fake LV Speedy! I pointed out the irony to DH and he said "well, that's how she knows"!. :roflmfao:

I really do think a lot of people have no idea that a bag they are carrying is a replica or fake. If you are not into bags and don't know what a designer's style is, there is no way to know that the bag you picked up from the mall kiosk is a fake of a Jimmy Choo or a Prada (especially if it doesn't have a label on it). I know that I am not familiar with a lot of the different brands on these forums, since I frequent the Marc Jacobs, L.A.M.B. and Chloe forums. Until recently (because I have been in Nordstrom a lot), I had no idea that some of the bags I had seen faked were fakes of Jimmy Choo bags. I just never paid attention to them. There are a lot of those kiosks or stores that sell fakes, but don't advertise them as fakes, just as inexpensive, fashionable bags. I know there are a lot of people that were fake monogram bags and they usually know, but a lot of the others, I think that most of those people just think they are buying a cute, colorful bag.

Its funny one of my friends who does fraud investigation loves the fakes. She loves going down to Canal Street in NY and buying stuff. It's funny though as I have never seen her carry a fake bag. I think she gives them as gifts. Weird hu.

This brings up a question. What about bags like look vaguely like a designer's bag but is obviously different? I have a small pouch I got in a mall kiosk that has the basic shape of an LV pochette but the pattern is different (ampersands instead of LVs and the other little figures look different). I got it just for fun a few years ago (before I became aware of the issue) and I don't consider it a fake that is intended to deceive. It's just silly and now looks tacky and haven't used it in a long time.

So when is a bag "inspired" and when is it a fake? Just asking.
