Why Do People Buy Fake Designer Bags Or Fake Designer Anything?

Heather!!! Come back!!!!!!! I need to know!!
hia, i live in london and i loooove tk maxx, last weekend i spotted prada (yes, in tk maxx!!) price tag was amazing - £250 but i really didnt like the design and the leather. but if they do bbags as well... im gonna check them out every week! lol i think they get delivery 1 a week (wednesday) so i better get ready!!

I know a few people who carry fakes and find it perfectly a-OK to carry a fake and they think that I'm the stupid one for spending so much on the real thing. And it's the same reasoning as someone said on page 1 of this thread - why spend €1,000 when I can get the bag for like €100 or something. Now I think spending €100 on a fake bag is crazy because €100 is a lot of money like! It's just a waste, you'd be a lot better off buying a good leather bag from a high street store for the same price of €100 rather than wasting it on a fake.

Someone once tried to convince me that "all the super rich of the world don't waste their money on the real bags, they buy fakes" - I was like err what? It was the stupidest thing I'd ever heard!

This is why I  tPF! At least I have people here that I can talk to about designer bags and I don't have to spend so much time justifying buying the real thing.

dear, I'm very sorry if that sounds rude .. but how much did u pay for your balenciaga twiggy? i'm dying to get one (dont want to pay full retail price) and i love tk maxx.. :) hope u dont feel ofended by my q, if so - just ignore my post :(

Hi, my bag cost 179 euros! I was absolutely flabbergasted. This gorgeous Twiggy was just lying on the ground. I recognized the hardware and picked it up. Later I wondered if the price tag was a mistake, but I didn't say a word to the girl at the cash counter! It's a magnificent bag, but I'm sure my 'find' at TK Maxx is far from common. Nevertheless I'll be going back!

I live in the south...and I don't know about everywhere else...but this area is abundant with fake Coach bags. Everywhere I turn I see one. That is why I've just kind of gotten out of the Coach Signature line.

Same for me, we have a Coach outlet 20 minutes from my house and it seems everyone has a Coach bag. I see a LOT of LVs too and although this area does have it's fair share of wealthy people I just wonder every time I see one in the grocery store.

My mom carrie a fake LV she bought for $30.She truly believes that she is far smarter than me because I paid full price for my real Speedy and she saved xxx amount of money. She and my Dad both love to bring up how I could've had the same thing as Mom and saved soo much money.:rolleyes:They don't get it,and they never will.

The diverting of sales is one of the worrying things abut fake bags. I can easily imagine the makers of authentic bags coming under pressure from counterfeits to cut corners, so as to maximize profits. I sense this state of affairs from some of the posts I have read here about X, Y, and Z brands (that they have paid fortunes for) not being such good quality as they used to be. I can also imagine that if this continues, some fakes might actually be of a better quality than the original!

I'll never understand why people get so steamed up about fake bags. They'd do better to keep an eye on the morality of their own behaviour, outside of handbags. I'm far more concerned about counterfeit food products, especially after seeing a documentary in France last year about counterfeit food and drugs. A few days ago my husband picked up some 'counterfeit cheese' in a discount grocery store in Ireland. I don't know if people in US know a brand of cheese called 'Laughing Cow'. It's called 'La Vache Qui Rit' in France. Anyway, the packaging was so similar the cheese was obiously a knockoff but he didn't notice till I pointed it out and tasted the cheese (which was of course different from the original). But at least this fake cheese was probably safe as it came from a German supermarket and would have passed EU health and safety legislation. So I wonder how vigilant the EU really is about counterfeit products. This one was blatant.
Well this IS a forum about handbags so you will find a great deal of discussion here about fake bags. It doesn't mean that anyone is not keeping an eye on their own behavior outside of handbags.

hi ladies im a newbie to this forum and i thought i might put my two cents in this thread.. i buy BOTH real and fake bags. i own Coach, Marc by MJ, DB, rebecca minkoff real bags BUT i own fake a fendi spy, MJ stam and balenciaga motorcycle.. BUT THATS ALL!! i will explain why.. i am a college student and in my defense i can't afford to spend more than $500+ on a handbag when that can pay for a semester of books i really NEED. i enjoy the quality of well made handbags but sometimes i have to sacrifice until i get a real job. i love the style of high end designers but its just not possible right now. but i will also add that i cant stand and dislike fakes such as coach, DB, LV and chanel bc usually girls who carry those fakes usually just want labels all over them. im not sure if i make sense or sound like a hipocrit but i hope that helps some of you who wonder why girls might carry fakes.
It's still no exucse. It's very simple... if you can't afford it, then buy what you CAN afford. Don't buy something that infringes on someone else's ideas.

And I feel very comfortable saying this because I think it is less a matter of telling someone how to spend their money and more about following the law and respecting designers and their labels. I think people trivialize the matter because it's handbags and they consider that frivolous. However, as someone else pointed out, when you get into stealing someone's drug or book or something like that, then it becomes a problem. Well, it's not less serious just because it is a handbag. It's illegal and no one should promote or ignore illegal behavior by saying that it's their money.

I don't agree with fakes because I value intellectual property rights.

That said, if people want to buy status ... then they will get the "status" associated with a fake bag....

Too many people around me carry fakes...I can always tell. I don't buy fakes because I like to know I have the real thing, but sometimes I can't stand the fact that everyone thinks mine are fake because they have fakes. :/ I buy what I can afford. It is better to save your money for a real bag that will last than waste your money on 10 fake bags that will end up in the trash.

Junebug and Kate- I also live in the South close to Orlando and it seems like 3 out 4 women have a coach bag and the fourth has a LV. I'm sure most are fake, especially with so many cruises going to the Bahamas in our area. I bought my wifes first coach bag well over 10 years ago and have bought several of the logo bags over the past several years but refuse to buy any more. I still buy her an occasional coach but ones that are all leather and not mainstream. There are two coach outlets close by which is where I have bought most of ours so I'm sure there are many real ones from here as well. The LV's seem like they have become as popular as the coach as well. One of my next bags for her is a LV Tivoli. I'm sure this bag will eventually go into fake production if not already. It is disappointing to buy her such a beautiful bag only for most people to think "Oh it's a fake". But then again I don't buy bags to impress other people, only for my wife so....

Also I'm just totally floored that there are actually fake Bal bags out there! This is another on my wish list...probably the city bag. I thought only the more popular ones like coach and LV were fakes although after becomming a member of the tPf and hanging out in the Jimmy Choo threads (my latest obsession-choo's) I found out these are also being made as fakes!

Also thanks for the TJMaxx tip. I'm gonna be going there often to look for Bal bags!! Hopefully it will be real though! Anybody run into fakes at a store like this? LETS KEEP IT REAL!

I've run into fake bags at well known department stores twice, and it seems that people buy the real bag and return a fake or perhaps the employees are switching it.

Nothing surprises me anymore, but I do find it funny when I see celebs wearing a bag and it's a good fake yet some people break the bank to get it assuming it's real and insist that it must be real. It depends on the individual because if someone is concerned with quality then they will always get real but if someone is concerned about image then they will get a fake.

Don't believe me......... Read for yourself

"It was only a matter of time before ex-pop star Britney Spears was added to the pool of celebrities who wear fake designer handbags. Joining the list with tennis pro Anna Kournikova who sports a fake Louis Vuitton Multicolore Speedy, reality t.v. star Nicole Richie who owns a few fake Balenciaga’s, American actress Michelle Trachtenberg who totes a replica Chloe Paddington Satchel, and now Britney Spears with her white-ish-pink bag that’s suppose to be Chanel "

I visited my local branch of TK Maxx today, and there wasn't one Balenciaga anywhere in the shop. Mind you, the discounted Max Mara woolly tights were nearly sold out. I got the very last pair. So maybe other people just beat me to another great Bbag!
