Why Do People Buy Fake Designer Bags Or Fake Designer Anything?

I'm relatively new to tPF, and found this topic and the responses interesting.

I've read through most of the thread (it's quite long!) and it's apparent that in terms of those who buy fakes, there are a number of types - but it's those who deliberately buy fakes to show-off as status symbols and brag about it that really irks everyone.

There is actually a study about the psychological costs of wearing knock-offs. The study posits that people who know they are wearing fakes have a higher tendency of cheating in other aspects in their life, even without them knowing it. This is the hidden psychological effect of wearing knock-offs. An excerpt can be found here.

Personally, as long as you are "quietly" enjoying your bag, I see no problem with it. Earlier, I was at a fair and saw this woman approaching - she was well dressed (I loved her whole getup) and she was wearing an LV Damier Azur Neverfull that really went well with her outfit. Then I saw it as she walked past me: the bag's handles' stitches had come off and were peeling  But I didn't think ill of her, or judged her for buying a fake, but I had to admit, the frayed bag handles ruined her really nice outfit :nogood:

At a family gathering today, my LV was sitting right next to my cousin's fake LV. My aunt went crazy saying how cute it was that we had matching purses. She asked where we got them and I didn't say a thing while my cousin replied that she got hers online. I just wanted to scream that hers is a fake! Look at the handles that are fraying and pealing! But I didn't say a word as it seems my cousin actually believes it is real! It must be sad if she believes it is real- then that is one poor quality bag if that is all the better it held up! :bagslap::noggin:

Its a mystery to me why many still buy these fake bags

Specially like when someone says how do you like my new bag... my hubby
just got it for me at Hermes for my birthday/anniversary..

Its so blatantly fake I don't know whether to laugh or thow up...

It's sad when it's posted in the H forum too. Everyone is always so quick to congratulate: "Oh what a sweet hubby" and "Beautiful bag" and all that.

I wonder how many of these posters sit back and laugh - thinking that tpfers don't know $@^#. Or how many tpfers seethe in silence at the gaul of tpfers who post fakes "posing" as authentic.

Does anyone ever not know that their bag is fake? Sadly, yes. Especially if they've never seen the real thing, or they've had very little experience with the real thing. Not everyone who buys a "designer bag" checks the accuracy of their research prior to making their purchases, and many conterfeiters have scammed legitimate "deal seekers".

But it's likely that many more women with fakes - know that they're carrying fakes - and they just don't care. For them, the joke is on those of us who pay retail.

In the end - it's pointless to invest any emotional energy on why people buy fakes - other than to do one's personal best to educate those individuals interested in this topic by informing them that the legally and morally responsible decision - when it comes to the temptation to buy a fake - is to not collude with criminal counterfeit enterprises - especially when there are a million and one "inspired" bags, legitimately sold under other "designer labels" that bear striking resemblance to popular designs often counterfeited - which, may raise the eyebrows of some diehard fans, at least don't line the pockets of criminals. :smile1:

My mom has a fake LV that she was gifted. It's not a good looking replica either. I don't understand why she wears it knowing it clearly looks fake. She said she doesn't care but it makes me nauseous lol. She has very nice taste in clothes, shoes, bags that are all name brand & authentic- purchased from dept stores. She could very well afford a used LV. I may just buy her 1 for her birthday as long as she throws that 1 away.

Apparently the whole - counterfeiting is illegal - blew right past you. ;)

Actually no, however, we are not talking about the production of fakes but WHY people wear them, and honestly, I never understand why grown woman could sit here and try to figure out why another grown person does this or that....I find it sadder and emptier that there is an actual debate on what people can't and can afford and why if you cant afford it you're not entitled to it etc.. then buying a fake bag or shoes or whatever will ever be. I think all of you who are angered by the thought of why people wear fake bags and why they "pose" like they have money should look inside yourself and figure out why you are so concerned about everyone else. What are you masking? Why are you so angry?

And yet here you are, participating in this very topic...
