I agree with many of the sympathetic sentiments above.
I think the success of design is that it creates something beautiful- an aesthetic that most people can't help but want. To appreciate and want to engage, emanate, participate, and OWN something beautiful is only human.
It is just a fact that most people can't buy designer. The whole purpose of lots of designer marketing is to price it exclusively. By definition, it becomes inaccessible to many people.
As a result, I just can't blame people for buying fakes intentionally sometimes. These are often people who are unlikely to have bought the real thing in the first place, and I am totally sympathetic to the desire to own something beautiful.
There are similar styles of bags to the real designers in lower end brands as well. They could chose that instead of making a fool of themselves.
There's this girl that I met a few times, but I barely know her. I was friends with her on Facebook and she would always post pictures of her designer items. Gucci sunglasses & bag, Hermes bracelet, a couple of LV items, MK watch, etc. She dresses really nice too.
One day a friend of mine who is really good with computers hacked into her hotmail account. That was wrong of her to do, I know, but that's not the point. She noticed a lot of emails from "iOffer" and checked it out. She realized that she has been buying fake items this whole time, showing off to her FB friends and trying to pass her "designer" items as real ones! This whole time, I thought she was spoiled by her dad, as she gives the appearance that she is rich.
Do you know someone that shows off fake items? I don't understand how someone can live with telling / showing people lies. You can easily buy fashionable non-designer stuff and no one would be like "OMG, she's wearing aldo sunglasses". I guess some people buy fakes for the "status".
oh i am loling at this. Soooo wrong to hack the account, but.... Hahaha! She's so busted.
Honestly, though i can't stand show-offs. Whether they're showing off authentic or fake it just irks. Either way it's pretty sad and pathetic, but when it's showing off fakes its damn near tragic.
And then if you're not even showing off things you bought with your own hard earned money, but stuff your parents supposedly bought? Ummm, so you were born into a family with money and parents with poor parenting skills... Hmmm... What's so impressive about that?

I don't like knockoffs personally. I know that the counterfeit bags are often made in sweatshops and the money is funneled to terrorist organizations or organized crime units. Unfortunately, the people who get arrested for selling counterfeit goods are the guys (and gals) on the street who are just trying to make a living, often in the US illegally and have no other way of supporting themselves.
That being said, I would never not "respect" someone for having a knockoff bag! Respect - or lack thereof - is due to someone's CHARACTER, not their material possessions. I have friends who have tons of knockoffs because they like the style and cannot afford the real ones. The fact that someone else would not respect them as people because they cannot afford the fancy bags that others carry makes me kind of disgusted.

Well said! And, ahem. Hello everyone. As one who works in the biz (sells Coach handbags) I have noticed that people buy fakes because they really want to attain the level of ownership that buying designer goods gives you. You can walk anywhere with designer goods on (shoes, bags, recognizable brand clothing) and a great deal of people will treat you differently than if you were walking around in your no name items. I have noticed this when out shopping, and I have even had this happen to me, (gotten better service than friends who don't carry designer goods in various shopping situations). It is a sad fact, and I feel sorry for people that think it is better to have a cheap knockoff of a designer brand, than a well made non-designer item. It's a crappy commentary on the world, but it seems to be true: the appearance of designer goods = better service and respect from people in a variety of situations...
Well said! And, ahem. Hello everyone.
I've been a long time lurker on this site, and have been researching counterfeit and fake luxury for the last couple years. You response accurately describes the social milieu, yet it is only one face of a multi-faceted phenomenon. To explain it in more detail, the root of counterfeits(and replicas) and their demand lies with the celebration of a really expensive brand/product. The product and its characteristics are what motivate people to buy them. Each luxury brand has its own intrinsic value and each type of value appeals to certain people (durability, design, material quality, exotic nature, etc.). They also have a common, baseline extrinsic value, which is of exclusivity. This air of exclusivity is what prompts people to really treat others differently the moment a luxury product is shown off. It is just the way it is.
For people who want exclusivity and intrinsic value, but can not afford to own many originals, usually end up buying high quality replicas.
For those who want exclusivity only, but cannot afford it, end up feeding the demand for cheap fakes.
I hope to discuss this and more in a separate thread.
By the way, for a 30 year old male that (as someone on this thread mentioned), doesn't have a CLUE about bags, this forum has been a revelation of sorts.![]()
