Why Do People Buy Fake Designer Bags Or Fake Designer Anything?

Good choice! I love the azur, I have one in a messenger style bag.

And btw, I saw in your signature you were looking for a Burberry headband. If you live by an outlet Saks (Off Saks), I always see them there on sale!

who cares.

just...who cares.

so let's say that hypothetically yes, i want others to think i'm rich. i want to be a poser. i want to buy a fake bag. great, what does that mean about me? i want to be seen as rich, i'm insecure, etc. so? that's my problem. there are a million other examples of insecure people wanting to be like others and would glady do more than buy a fake bag for it - people who desperately want to lose weight, people who would get plastic surgery, heck even most people who buy designer bags. who cares? if they're insecure it's their problem and why would you judge them on being insecure. it's a period that everyone goes through and will eventually come out of. i'm sure that everyone here has been insecure at some point in their life. just know that you're lucky you weren't insecure about your financial security, whilst others might be.

some might say that people who buy counterfeits are "bad people" morally because they are promoting a laundry list of every crime known to mankind. you know what, everything you do will promote a laundry list of a million crimes. so many places you shop at use child labor. target, walmart, they all do. coach bags and LVs that are made in china use child labor. and do these children get to go home just because you've closed down their shop? no, they either go work in a farm or go work at a worst place. they don't work in a sweatshop because it's the worst choice for them. they work there because it's the best choice they have.

this morality police attitude is disgusting. if you truly care about the state of the world, pick something else to be passionate about. and you will truly make a difference in the world. don't think that just because you buy real handbags instead of fake ones, you are contributing to society positively. why don't you take that money and donate it to third world countries instead? then you can judge others on their moral use of money.

and about the idea of intellectual property, well do you know how many people around you copy music? pirate movies? books? a lot. do i judge them at all? no, do you know why? because i'm not perfect, either. anyone here who wants to judge others because of a handbag should look at their life and only do so if they are absolutely perfect. i'm going to guess that you're not. do i judge people who steal things from stores? maybe, but that's because it's a bigger crime, and considering that the punishment is harsher, the government agrees with me too. and i have heard people say on TPF that they have habits which are considered much more immoral than carrying a fake handbag. i won't judge people who cheat on a math test, i won't judge people who carry fake bags, and i won't judge people who run red lights. in fact, it looks like running red lights are considered heavier crimes than carrying fake bags, as there's actually a punishment and it's ACTUALLY illegal! the insane lack of perspective here amusing at best.

my point is, if you have the money and the time where the argument of fakes vs. real bags is a big issue with you, then consider yourself lucky to be so blessed and then invest your energy with other issues. you know, issues that actually matter. like we've all learned since first grade, it's wrong to judge others based on what they're wearing. that goes for real handbags AND fake handbags, too. it's wrong to say someone who's wearing a real handbag is a classy, wealthy, morally upright person. it's also wrong to say the opposite to someone who's not wearing a real handbag. reverse racism is still racism.

That is an awesome perspective. Carrying a fake bag is not the end of the world, and most people are more happy about the hundreds of dollars they saved, than what others think of their choice. It is still a beautiful bag, and thats what the wearer cares about. We need to turn our attention to a bigger problems to solve.

There are more important crimes out there but this is the purse forum so it is appropriate that we discuss this issue. Judging others is judging others and by posting here in this thread, we are all doing that whether we are judging people who carry fakes or posters who happen to agree or disagree with the practice.

Narcissa,

Relativist arguments don't really work when you pin them down....I mean you can relativ-ize things to death....people have different things they are passionate about. Don't preach to people who think buying fake handbags is wrong...as if you are so much more worldly and better than they are. That isn't fair ;)

Seriously...if you think everyone who thinks buying fake handbags is so disgusting, why are you on THE PURSE FORUM? I ask that in all seriousness. SOMETHING drew you here. It doesn't make sense to me! Why even post on here, if you are just so much better than the rest of us because you actually care about things that you consider more important?

Whooooooops, what do I know....coming on tpf is my huge escape from Iraq and the doldrums here, I truly apologize that I like to be a little shallow sometimes ;) It's hard doing things all the time that make a difference! Sometimes I need a break!!!! :lolots: I'm just kidding........

Also...since you are being so philosophical ;) Reverse racism doesn't actually exist, the concept is invalid due to the power dynamics involved with racism. Hatred, on the other hand...does exist no matter what the dynamics. But we're not here to talk about racism, nor even try to compare it to fake handbags vs. real handbags. I would never even dare.

It isn't like the fake handbag problem consumes me, or others I would venture to say....actually, I have other things on my mind. I think most people do, also. But this is a thread....on tpf..........where people do, in some small way, care about fashion. And there are issues ALL the way around...counterfeiting is wrong, whether it is music or literature. I downloaded limewire and then deleted it because I felt icky...blechhhhhh!!!

It is not wrong to take a stand on an issue of right vs. wrong....and you are implying we are all stupid for basically wasting our time worrying about such an insignificant thing....but really, the smaller things add up to bigger problems if we aren't careful ;) And I would venture to say that the people who have posted on this thread in opposition to fake handbags, probably have strong opinions on other issues.

Actually, I can say that for a fact. I had the pleasure of having lunch with Swanky Mama of Three a few months ago, and we all had a GREAT lunch conversation about various things! She and guccigal07 are brilliant women....who happen to wear real Chanel and Hermes....but you know what? I definitely noticed what they were wearing, but it wasn't my focal point. It was their company, their opinions, and everything about the experience of talking with them. And I feel that way about all the tpfers I have met. I bet you and I could have a great lunch conversation too - and I'd bring my real Balenciaga, and I bet you would maybe like the color...if you like pinks/purples....but you wouldn't really make our whole lunch convo about it, would you? No, probably not.

Actually, most of my friends from my non-tpf life don't really care about purses....so I don't talk about it with them. I assume most people on here are like that, unless they have some friends that like purses.....but that's what drew us all here. But we can't talk about purses 24/7...that is why it spread out to having the General Discussion, Relationships, Beauty Bar, Health and Fitness sub-forums, etc.

*waves* Hi Candace! Nice to see you back here :p
Great post!

One of my favorite quotes, and appropriate for this thread and topic IMO:

Just because you can't do everything
doesn't mean you can't do something.

Can we stop counterfeiters/intellectual property theft/child labor, etc. . . ?
No.

In large groups are people able to make a difference? YES!

It actually takes away from people who buy the real deal to a limited extent. Having too many people walk around with fakes diminishes the value both to the designer and the hardworking people who save up for their designer purses. I am not rich but I work hard to save up for my purses. If fakes were ok, designers wouldn't prosecute counterfeiters nor would they be illegal items. Many of us here on the forum object to fakes but that doesn't mean we bought our purses to impress others. There are expensive purses that I don't buy (no matter how impressive to others they may be) because they are either 1) not functional or 2) I don't like the design.

That is the problem I have, I do not like people thinking that everything I buy is fake because there are easily affordable copies all over the place. I do not buy my bags for anyones enjoyment but mine, but I still feel it cheapens the experience of buying something nice for yourself when someone can get a reasonable copy for far less money.
