Why Do People Buy Fake Designer Bags Or Fake Designer Anything?

There will ALWAYS be imitation products. ALWAYS. Jean-makers try to copy the pockets of 7 for All Mankind, TR, etc. Furniture stores knock-off designs of higher-end furnishings stores. I just recently purchased a beautiful Tommy Bahama dining set which cost well over $10K. I recently saw the same identical set at a Mor furniture store. Obviously cheaper wood and an inferior product, but identical in appearance. Do I care? No. Not everyone can afford or wants to spend that kind of money on their home furnishings. I happen to. But why should I care, truly, if someone else gets something almost identical for less money? It doesn't take anything away from the set I purchased. I know it's real. I could care less whether anyone else does.

Have you been in Forever 21, Charlotte Russe, and any of the other "knock-off" fashion stores? Their styles and designs are IDENTICAL to what you'll find at Saks, Bloomies and Nordies. Identical. Obviously inferior in quality. But everyone wants to be stylish. Some people care about the label on the inside. Some people don't. Again, if it matters to you, you spend the big bucks for the labels. If it doesn't, and you want the designer looks for less, you shop the mass retailers.

There's definitely a divide on thought here. I honestly don't see it as "theft" when items are knocked-off for less. It truly happens everywhere. Pottery Barn and Pottery Barn Kids is a wonderful example. They license other cheaper companies to make their furniture (like Simmons) and they stick a Pottery Barn Kids label on it. What would cost you $200 at Sears for a crib, now costs you $900 at PBK. This issue isn't unique to LV.

This again???

Does anybody read anymore?

What you described is NOT what this thread is about.

What we are talking about is...if that brand of furniture at the department store slapped a Tommy Bahama label on it and sold it as though it were really Tommy Bahama.

Cheaper imitations are not fakes. If the labels inside the shirts at Charlotte Russe said 'Chanel', then they would be fakes.

HUGE difference, and not what we are discussing.

^That's not very nice in my opinion. I have no problems with anyone who carries fakes and don't get me wrong, I'm not in denial about what replica products fund and contribute to. No matter what their reason is for carrying it:
- they simply like the design of the bag
- can't afford it
- can afford the real thing but don't want to buy it
- don't know it's fake
- has sentimental value (eg gift from a parent who has passed on)

There is really no reason to judge. However I do see how it is annoying when someone knows it's fake and insists it's real.

In that instance try and give the person the benefit of doubt. Perhaps they truly believe it is authentic? Or maybe they've realised that it isn't and are too embarrassed to admit it?

I know that could be a reason because I've been in that boat before. Plus there are many PF members who have been in that boat before too (so many that I think we might need a few cruise ships).

I was cheated of thousands of dollars years ago and I truly thought my Gucci's and Fendi spies were real. I found out they weren't here on the PF and got rid of them.

I've seen some posts here on the forum that are 'sneak' shots of colleagues fakes (or shots of bags in the gym etc) which are in poor taste in my opinion. I'm not saying your intentions are vindictive pinksugah, please don't misunderstand me. I just feel that it's not a nice thing to do.

It's okay. I honestly don't think I will do it without her permission especially that i know that she wouldn't mind at all. They're all fakes and she admits it! her justification is "Why should I buy a $250 dollars purse/sunglasses/shoes when other people are starving to death?" Not very convincing in my opinion!
I bought a fake chanel 8 years ago when I couldn't afford the real thing! But looking back at it now knowing what I know, I wouldn't have bought it or used it even if it was given to me for free!!

I get what you mean. I say things and don't follow through or change my mind afterwards myself sometimes as well.

Like just the other day I told a colleague I would be ignoring my neighbour who has been harassing me (about cooking smells, when I haven't even been cooking!! But that's another story) but she said hello when I ran into her this morning. And I said good morning how are you and had a quick nice conversation with her. I'm such an idiot, need to learn to be rude. Again long story...

I get what you mean about that particular justification. Because you can always take it to another level and say, well $50 on a purse can be $50 spend on the starving. Or even $5 for a purse could be $5 spent on the starving.

People change though. What you did 8 years ago is not what you would do today as you said and that's what counts. Man there are a heck of a lot of things I did 8 years ago (or even 2 years ago) that I would not do now!

so she will donate 250$ for starving people?! lol that's what the sentence is implying, otherwise it's just a lame excuse. if she said she doesn't want to spend x amount of money on whatever ok, that's honest but that starving people thing... lol.

Patination is not an indicator of price.
I have a $20 Dooney card case which has become patinated. It's good quality, but it was not expensive.

but patination is an indicator that it's really leather ;) real leather is more expensive than cardboard as vachetta substitute (I think I saw a cardboard fake once, seeing it was cardboard because it was falling apart lol)

Hi guys! I am reading this thread and it is very interesting. I am a teen and have wanted an LV for a LONG time. I finally have the money bt reading this thread I'm kind of discouraged. I don't want people to see me carrying an authentic LV and assume it is fake and think I'm trashy and cheap when in reality I'm nt. I cannot give up my dream of owning an LV. Wat sld I do?

You should not care what other people think... you know its real and thats what matters.
Because I dont dress up most people would think my whole collection are fakes but I dont care I know theyre not and thats all that matters.

^^^Since this thread is 82 pages long it would seem natural for the discussion to change and progress in different directions. Relax.....

10 pages, 90 pages, 1,000 pages......imitations are not the same as the fakes that this entire thread is about...the conversation can change, but the argument is still irrelevant.;)

Sorry I am not totally caught up yet, I haven't been able to catch up since I left on my deployment, as you can see I last posted on this back near the beginning, middle of January. Unless people are jumping in without reading. But I just finished reading the last 40 or so pages, and this thread is a philosophy professor's nightmare :push:

You should go for it....or consider another brand because LV is not the only great brand out there. Anyways, people "in the know" and more importantly you will know that your bag is authentic. The people who think its fake are probably jealous (bc secretly they know its real) or don't know anything about handbags...Also, you get a great feeling carrying such an awesome purse!!
