Why Buy Designer Sunglasses?

I think they are worth it because of how often they are worn, and how very visible they are - sitting on your face. And, like you say, they show up in soooo many photos... You're right about cost per wear making them worth it.

I have roughly 30 pairs of sunglasses. They're Oakley, Ray Ban, Maui Jim, or designer. When it comes to style, durability, and quality Oakley wins all day every day. You can't kill them and even if you scratch the lenses they're easy and cheap to replace. I keep a pair in my purse, car, and work bag.

Now as for designer glasses, they can definitely be worth it if you wear them enough and care for them but I think some brands are better than others. I own Chanel, Prada, YSL, Dolce & Gabanna, Pucci, and Marc Jacobs. Prada and Marc Jacobs are the best bang for your buck with style and quality but MJ sunglasses tend to stretch out if you wear them on top of your head. I got all my Chanel sunglasses over a decade ago so there's no way I'd pay the atrocious prices they're asking now because the quality is no different.

The sunglasses that offer the prettiest views and the most protection are Maui Jim, bar none. They're worth every single penny I spent.

If I had to give up any of my sunglasses the designer ones would definitely be gone first. They just don't offer what Oakley or Maui Jim do. I still love their style and the flair they offer but to me they're not what I consider to tried and true eyewear for everyday use.

Ha! You are a gal "after my own heart" - I own at least 16 pairs of sunglasses presently (all designer), and I've sold a few pairs as well.. I think I have a little addiction going, but since one wears them on one's face every single day (well, at least I do, my eyes are pretty sensitive to light), I figure they're worth it! Presently in my collection are:. Celine, Balenciaga, Dior, Chanel, Gucci, Versace, Prada, Roberto Cavali and
Kenzo and I love them all! I sold a Gucci and a Proenza Schouler last year because I just never reached for them in "light" (pun intended) of all the others. #Obsession!!!
I do think they are all well made (better than the rest of what is offered in the marketplace), and that the respective companies invest more in actual function and style.. most of the time the designer sunglasses appear to be composed of sturdier materials as well. Finally, though it may be hard to believe, each pair I own is different and each serves a different function as well as aesthetic.

I have sensitive eyes too, I thought I was the only one!

I don't buy sunglasses often I just never get rid of them once I get them, haha! I've never thought about selling the pairs I don't really wear anymore so you've planted an idea in my head.

Designer sunglasses will usually always win more style points but my Oakleys and Maui Jims have stood the test of time with quality and durability. I'm willing to sacrifice a little style to know that at the 10 year mark my Oakleys will look and work the same as they did the day I bought them and that hasn't happened with my designer shades. I'm hoping to find that guarantee in a designer brand and I'm excited for the day that I do! Until then, they're my feeling fancy/special occasion/ wanted-to-look-really-cute-today glasses!

I live in FL, nice sunglasses are a must. My contacts also make my eyes more sensitive to the sun. I feel like sunglasses are like bags. I switch them up based on my mood or what I’m wearing. I love that my designer sunglasses hold up well and how nice they look compared to cheap ones.

Well said! Yes, mood plays a role in my choices as well!

Ive started collection sunglasses that I have thrifted..its like a little game to see what I can find. I would never get the opportunity to buy them new.
Lately Ive found Tom Ford , Michael Kors for the grand total of NZ$7.
But over the last few years Ive found Fendi , John Galliano , Lacoste, Emporio Armani and a few other lesser known brands from NZ that turned out to be a bit pricey.
Ive found better sunglasses and clothing from thrifting then buying instore. And as such I look after them. The chances of me getting another pair at those prices is very slim.

I have only four pairs of sunglasses:
1. A Gucci pair which has lasted me years and years (probably at least 10 years at this point)
2. The foldable Ray-Ban wayfarers - which I purchased to place in my smaller bags
3. The Prada Baroque - I regret this. I used to think they looked cool, now they just look dated
4. Gentle Monster - I went to Seoul and all my girl friends bought one so I got curious and bought one for myself. They're great!

To be honest, my favorite pair are the Raybans because they're so convenient to stash in my bags. The Gucci one looks the best on me though, I really wish I had kept the receipt and the papers it came with so I can find the style. It's the perfect style for my face shape.

I think designer sunnies are hit or miss. I liked my Gucci and regretted my Prada. At the end of the day, it's the design and the fit on your face which is important, labels be damned.

My first pair of designer sunglasses was a pair of black Marc by Marc Jacobs ones with a little star on each arm that I probably got at Nordstrom Rack. Next was gold Juicy Couture aviators on sale for $80 I treated myself to while I was working in retail like a decade ago... I still have them though I need to replace them because I scratched them last year! I have a couple pair of cheap fashion shades, but I think classic shades are a good investment piece since a good pair lasts for years and can finish an outfit nicely. My latest pair: Balmain, purchased at Saks Off 5th for $100. Find a price point you’re comfortable with and shop around... the hunt can be fun!

Have you tried taking a pic of your Gucci sunglasses, and doing a Reverse Image search on Google Image? Or posting a pic here in TPF and seeing if anyone knows the style?
