Why Buy Designer Sunglasses?

RayBan is a reputable brand, known for sunglasses. Designer sunglasses like Chanel, Gucci, etc are licensed names to the manufacturing companies you mentioned, they aren't produced in the fashion houses.

exactly, that’s why I think it’s not worth buying designer sunglasses because they truly won’t be better. a Pair of Ray Bans will do the job and look really stylish actually they are truly the classics the pairs that wont ever go out of style.

Designer specialist brands are basically the only option for mammoth ivory (usually from Siberia), vintage turtle shell (pre-ban deadstock), exotic woods and solid precious metals. These are definitely worth the price as they tend to be made to exacting standards with made to measure and even bespoke options. Maison Bonnet being one example among many. If you are going to wear glasses might as well wear interesting ones.

Buy what suits your budget and your aesthetic. I wear sun glasses a lot. For many, many years, I’ve have bought frames at Morganthal Frederics (an optician boutique with multiple branches) bc they are comfortable, stylish and durable plus i can get my prescription with bells and whistles (anti glare, progressive etc etc) put in them. Also important, I get a professional opinion on fit and shape and size from store professionals who themselves are usually avid eyewear collectors who also know my taste and collection. I personally would not buy most fashion designer sunglasses bc many come from the same large manufacturer and I am not fond of logos. My DH loves horn eyeglass frames etc, so it’s something we like to shop for together. As for price, my prescription is pricy (currently about 1100 usd just for the lenses, and so are the frames. So, a pair of glasses or sunglasses can be comparable to a few CSGM. in horn or an exotic material, the cost of an H wallet. Needless t say, I try to be careful with my glasses and keep them inside the case when they are not on my head. They do last for years and I wear ones that are twenty years old or more.

my favorite pair is an oversized blue and white buffalo horn pair by Hoffman, handmade in Germany, for morganthal. Its a few years old but Morganthal carries a version every season. Morganthal also does excellent plastic and metal frames (I particularly like the Matsuda ones (mine are prescription)

I wanted to add that I love the universal sunglasses case by Valextra. Pricy and exposed temples, but it allows me to carry oversized sunglasses in small bags

Having not read the prior posts, I have some designer sunnies that are polarized and of high quality. I'm not saying I could have gotten some with the same features for a lot less, but the ones I have are durable and stylish. That said, we all have our "thing", and if designer sunglasses are a person's choice, I say 'go for it'. On another note, I like coats. Nice coats. I have more coats than necessary, but I like them (I should stop buying them  ). However, I'll still get another if I really love it. So, for those who get designer sunglasses? Fine!

On yet another note, there are many things/activities/events I don't have an interest in that others love. Again, we all have our "thing".

I can't always afford to buy into some designer lines at the bag level so "settling" for a less expensive item scratches that itch
I managed to amass a sizeable collection of various designer sunnies from NM last Call. I literally wept when they closed that store. :crybaby: I also managed to acquire a nice shoes and bag/accessories stash from them too :girlsigh:
My "thing" is black boots. I have had to ask for others to stage periodic interventions as I simply wasn't able until very recently to walk away from another pair of black boots. I have been known to ask fellow shoppers-----complete strangers-----to please wrest them from my hands and put them in their cart in order to save me from myself.
The pandemic 2020 rekindled my nail polish obsession. I tried to branch out into brave new colors, and succeeded admirably while still managing to cover every shade of griege known to man

I’m bumping this thread because I was confused that I couldn’t find a Chanel sunglasses thread... I just splurged on a pair and am wondering why theres no section for Cc sunnies lovers?

For me, the cost per wear is worth it. I don’t wear contacts so I get rx sunglasses and keep old pairs as spares in my car’s glove compartment. I’ve been fortunate that I haven’t lost any sunglasses yet (fingers crossed) and my prescription hasn’t changed much over the years. I’m partial to Gucci although I also have Raybans, Miu Miu, and Warby Parker. WP has some nice made in Italy frames for ~$195 with rx lenses. I’ve had my Gucci sunglasses for 10 years now.

I bought a pair of Jackie O's from Ray Ban...made in Italy..from The Rack a few years ago for around $100. They are tough as nails...I'm not careful with them. I have a pair of Versace Tribute sunglasses and Dior's too which I'm a little more careful with...but I kind of like these well made obscure names that I just read about above on this page. May look into buying one of these unique styles!

Hi! I haven't read the previous post but I have sunglasses from a Korean brand called Gentle Monster and I love them!!!! I got a pair for my mom and grandma as well. I got them when I studied in Korea to fit in a bit. The design is unique and they're really sturdy worth the $300 ish price tag.

I wore the same pair of Victoria Beckham sunglasses for 11 years before purchasing another pair of VB sunnies. I've had basic sunglasses from the chemist etc. before and they just don't hold up to my use. My older VB ones had been sat on, wore out on the boat (exposed to sea water/salt and sun) and besides needing a clean they are still perfect... just not my preferred style anymore.

I fully expect this new pair to last me another 10+ years. I do keep my sunnies in their pouch/case when not being used but I give them similar levels of care that all my belongings get.

Okay here is the thing

you don’t have to spend on designer sunglasses but Try to go for something at it’s at least 60 dollars because sunglasses are not just a fashion accessory it’s a tool to keep your sight in good health for a long long Time.

and cheapies sometimes can hurt you more than not wearing any sunglasses If you don’t really have the UV protection.
you can get a good quality pair at Nordstrom rack from the brands Quay Australia or Diff eyewear or you can even find designer sunníes at 60 dollars in your nearest Nordstromrack or asksoff.

now there are some cheap ones which do the job but have to take them to an optical store to check it’s UV protection.

Most designer sunglasses brands are owned by the two eyewear giants Luxottica and Safilo and manufactured in China. Whilst the smaller independent eyewear brands don't have the name recognition of the larger brands, quality-wise they tend to be much better and (generally) less expensive too. Cubitts, Archibald London and Kirk Originals are good brands in the UK and I hear that Salt Optics in the US are very good quality but I don't have direct experience of them myself.

you forgot Marchon and Marcolin hehe
if you didnt know about them check their websites Both have a big chunk of brands.
Marcolin has Tom Ford and guess between many others while Marchon has MCM, Victoria Beckham and Lanvin

you are right the eyewear industry depends of big groups ( surprisingly all Italians ) and now of those groups also have now a factory in China.

actually if you go the MCM site you check pair by pair And you’ll see there are some made in Italy and some made in china.
