Re-reading my previous post, it was unclear.
I'd go for the D. It has perfect specs, it is going to sparkle a lot because it has a superb cut and at 1.24 ct, I think it is a very large stone. I love the icy whiteness of F and up and to me the added size of the J would not be worth it.
However, if you want to be sure of being the most admired in 'most' circumstances, go for the J. When you buy a stone for beauty be aware that you are buying it for your own pleasure, since in my experience 9 out of 10 women (in America anyway) are always going to notice/admire the largest stone over any thing else, always, not the prettiest (unless the the largest stone has obvious, visible black boogers or doesn't sparkle AT ALL). The J in this case is certainly going to be pretty (it's very well cut) and it being over 2 carats gives you a very good chance of it being the largest stone, most of the time in most places (this would even include among lawyers and investment bankers in NYC in my experience) which does seem to be what really, really counts, when people are being absolutely honest. 1.24 doesn't do that anymore--it's a big stone (average is still .38) but it's not all that much bigger than 1 carat, which a significant amount of people now own.

Of the two, I would go for the perfect diamond because they are extremely rare. Less than 1% of the world's population owns a diamond above a carat and most people that do own a carat do not own a flawless diamond.

My engagement ring is H, VVS2 and I love it. I can see a slight tint when viewing it from the side in certain light (like our back office lights). But under most circumstances it is blindingly white and gets tons of compliments on the color. I couldn't go down to a J, but G-H still looks very white to me.

I woiuld go for the smaller stone. I think the bigger the stone, the more important it is to get better quality because the size makes it more noticeable. My stone is an F and I personally would not go below that. If you can't live with 1.2 ct, then I would look somewhere in between. I might think about J stones in my ears, but not on my hand.

Both are high quality stones that are eye clean and with a good cut. J is still very white unless you are highly colour sensitive.

Even my own light yellow antique diamond looks white depending on the light. Even when I compare it with my top wesselton stones. Don't worry about a J stone.

I have been trying, but I don't have any really good pics of my diamond. This might help show you that a J doesn't look yellow though.

Here's my J-stone engagement ring (2.11 carats, VVS1). It's warm but not yellow. I have it set in platinum.

Thanks Monica! It's exactly 2 carats, platinum prongs, yg setting. I'm determined to get a pic that would really show it's clarity. That was just done on my macbook camera, lol!
