when did your bag obsession began?

In some jobs like the fashion industry, you are being judged by what you wear, so I understand that! Also depends on the crowd you mingle with. so sorry that the experience with your boss is negative for you though...
You're lovely. My job has nothing to do with the fashion industry; I just had a dictatorial boss. And a LOT of years have passed between then and now, so by now, it's just another mildly amusing story to tell. Besides, I *did* end up with some gorgeous additions to my closet along the way.

1988 spring break. Trip to NYC to see my godmother with my mommy. White plastic coated vinyl print mini 2-way satchel with hot pink palm tree print. That bag was fierce as hell and I left it in a yellow cab after seeing the Statue of Liberty and I bawled my eyes out. Yeah I’ve always been into bags.
That satchel does sound fierce and fun!

My bag obsession began in around the year 2002 during a very difficult time in my life. So to deal with things I couldn’t control I used to stay up all hours on eBay and the Louis Vuitton website just looking at expensive bags. It was my mind candy and escape. I did purchase a few from eBay (this was before TPF and their lovely authentication threads). I was fortunate to not have been duped and unknowingly bought a fake. Today I am able to own the bags I used to only look at.

I experienced the same thing as you during this pandemic. I think this new interest in bags provide a distraction for me, it might be a new hobby. I am happy that you are able to own the bags that you haved always wanted!

D1081552-86F2-4334-B0BA-1A9EA66E3122.pngMy handbag obsession began around the summer of 2005 when I saw magazine pics of celebrities carrying the Chloe Paddington.

The era of ‘It’ bags is generally over thanks to social media and a move toward an individualized sense of fashion.

But man oh man, during 2005, I remember thinking ‘Stop the presses, what is that bag?! I gotta have it!’
That gigantic padlock that was so out there combined with a beautiful classic handbag style and luscious looking leather.

I purchased my first designer bag (Chloe Paddington in caramel color) in 2005 and it was a ‘gateway drug’ to other designer bags, lol.

I no longer have my Chloe Paddington but I always remember it as being my first designer handbag!

You must have had fond memories of that bag, I love reading about everyone's experience and their first designer bags. Thanks for sharing

In my 20’s and 30’s, I could not afford nice handbags. I tended to be a “carry the same black handbag everyday until it fell apart” then buy another black handbag and repeat. In my 40’s, I started working as an esthetician and had to wear a black tee and pants to work, then weekends as a single mom, so I never even got to wear people clothes, let alone accessorize. Two years ago, I was given a D&B by stepmom that she bought new and never used. It was pretty and I liked it, but I turned around and gifted it to my sister...her first nice bag and she really deserved it. She loved it and is now a Dooney junkie. My then boyfriend (now DH) thought what I did was kind so he bought me a Coach Prairie satchel for my birthday that year. That was the beginning. I became a Coach girl, buying them secondhand in all colors. I started buying and selling bags on PM that I picked up cheap because they needed a little TLC and I fixed them up. Then this past spring, I took a chance on a pricier bag- a Lancel Dalichic. I never had a bag that nice in my hands before and could instantly see what top quality was like. Wow! Eye opener. I bought an LV Bucket GM on auction for $180 that had a peeling lining and fixed it up. That was all she wrote. I fell in love with LV canvas bags and have not looked back since. I have 8 LVs, 2 Gucci bags, a Fendi, a Bally and a Burberry, as well as a few Coaches, Minkoffs and a Ralph Lauren Black Label. I have a couple Longchamps too. All my bags are secondhand except for that one Coach from my DH and a Coach tote I bought at the outlet. I am so spoiled buying preloved and vintage....I get great bags for a fraction of the price. But I am really slowing down....my collection is basically where I want it after trial and error this year.

Thats really awesome and thoughtful of you to do for your sister. I buy my bags secondhand too, not everyone has the budget to afford new bags, its a great way to try out which bags are suited for yourself. Great to hear that you're happy with your current bag collection , it sounds like a wonderful collection !

I started out liking coach bags in 2008 or 2009. Then I ventured into juicy couture for a little while and then I saw a LV keepall in an airport and fell down a rabbit hole I dabbled in MK also but nothing compares to LV for me. Safe to say I'm obsessed but that's a good thing since I verify LV bags everyday! Here's a portion of my Louis Vuitton collection. I recently sold other branded bags and SLG's along with LV bags that were pretty worn. I don't care for many LE items that are impractical. My collection reflects my lifestyle so no fancy bags here although I appreciate them from afar. I have a short video on my IG and TikTok (@liyahsluxuries) with my entire collection if you'd like to see it ❤️

My husband was the catalyst. I was content with my Target and TJ Maxx finds with no regard to brand or quality. I would buy my idea of a cute bag, carry it every single day until it fell apart and repeat the process.

My husband, however, was raised around horses and all of their fine leather tack. He made good fun of my bags that would start fraying within mere weeks of purchase. One day, he decided to be more helpful than jokester and suggested I try buying leather goods at a higher price point so that I could use them until I got tired of them.

About 20 bags (now happily pared down to 7) and many dollars later, I’m in obvious, full agreement with him! I don’t want more than 7 bags around but certainly appreciate keeping bags as long as I like because they are indeed well made.

Although I’m content with my bags, I still enjoy videos, read about and look at bags quite a bit.

The irony of it all is that my husband can say very little, if anything, about my bag behavior because he started it all!

For me, my obsession with bags began after I purchased my first and favourite designer bag, a black Balenciaga City in regular hardware. Prior to me purchasing this bag, I merely admired the styles of various bags and knew nothing about leather or quality differences. I loved the Balenciaga City style and dreamt about buying one but could not bring myself to spend so much. Nonetheless, I kept thinking about this bag and after a few years of convincing myself, I finally pulled the trigger. I should note that no bags after that first one took quite as long when it came to self-convincing

After finally buying that first designer bag, I got addicted to all the characteristics that makes a good quality bag. I couldn’t stop touching (or smelling) the leather of my Balenciaga and loved observing all the little details, from the stitches to the hardware. After that, my bag obsession fully took off.

It was when I was about 5 or 6 years old. My parents took me to a flea market. After walking around a bit, I spotted a pink, plastic purse with faux pearl handle. There were some kid jewelry pieces inside, but it was the baby's shade of pink and its cute size that mesmerized me. I was so enamored with it, I ended up staying at the vendor in the hopes my parents would get it for me. Instead, my parents freaked out because they thought I was lost. They found me, but I didnt get the bag.
As the years passed, I collected and used different cute-styled bags, but now I'm working on my designer collection. But I still love cute design, luxury or not....

Long story short, it started with a pink bag.
