What's your FIRST designer bag you ever bought?!

Mine was a tiny little Coach (attached pic). I searched through my old posts from 2007 and it looks like I bought it for $67 at an outlet and nearly died at the price. Apparently I even had considered returning it.

I had just graduated undergrad and NEVER carried a purse of any type before then. I remember being staunchly anti-purse growing up, high school, college, etc. But there was something alluring about the designer handbag world, so I made the purchase. It seemed so roomy at the time, but anyone familiar with this style bag knows how tiny it is! I've since moved onto big bags.

I posted this about 5 years ago in a similar thread. Here's my long story of the first designer handbag I ever purchased.

In the fall of 2000 my best friend had purchased the Kate Spade "Sam" bag in black nylon. At the time, I thought she was crazy for spending that much money on a bag. However, she was working, while I was a broke student starting my last year of law school.

Fast forward to March 2002. I was in middle of my articling year and had never been so stressed in my life. I lost a Motion in Court, tripped and fell on my way back to office (in the pouring rain) and was fighting the tears when I got back to the office. I just sort of snapped. I called my friend who happened to work near to Holt Renfrew, told her that I was about to do something drastic and asked her to meet me at Holts on her lunch hour.

We met up there and I bought the first Kate Spade bag to catch my eye. It was a black and white stripped canvas tote with a bright crimson red lining. I think it was the Monaco stripe pattern. I swear to you all, that day money did buy happiness.

The SA was so nice to me. I may have told her it was my first "real grown-up lady purse", so she wrapped it up in one of the pretty Holt Renfrew boxes and even tied it up with ribbon for me.

I returned to the office. At the time, all the articling students shared one big space, with each of us having our own cubicle. Of all the students, I was the only female. So I strutted in to the office, announced that I had spent the last 7 months listening to their guy talk and they owned me 5 minutes of girl-bonding. I proudly displayed my beautiful new bag to them. To their credit, they played along, offered several compliments and told me I deserved it.

It was the uniqueness of that particular bag, the quality of the construction, the feeling of luxury and the idea that I could reward myself, that "flipped the switch". I began to take an interest in fashion and worked on developing my own style.

That bag would be the gateway to many other "because I deserve it" bag purchases over the years. I've refined my tastes and edited the collection quite a bit in the 17 years since that fateful day, flittering between contemporary and luxury designer handbags. Although I retired that first Kate Spade bag many years ago, I held on to it until just last year, sending her off (with a Marie Kondo, "thank-you for your service") to a consignment shop. I think she still resides there waiting for a new owner.

It was a google search I did in 2012 trying to find the name of that first bag that lead me to TPF. I've mostly lurked here ever since.

Amazing story! You should post more stories here on the purse forum, would love to read more of your experiences :)

A baby pink glove leather Mulberry Bayswater - at the time they were less than £500 and I manage to find a one in excellent condition, hardly used, for approximately half the retail price. Sadly I no longer use it as it's too heavy and cumbersome, but I'm still reluctant to sell.

If you are talking high end, then the first one I bought with my own money was the LV Mini Ribera bag in Damier Azure at the end of 2005. I bought it with my first ever Christmas bonus from work. My first ever high end bag was the LV Tambourine bag that my grandmother got me for a college graduation present in 2003. I still have both of these bags. If you are including mid-level bags, I had a couple Coach bags in the late 90s, early 2000s during college years but cannot remember the styles anymore.

My first designer bag was a huge Coach British Tan duffle. I still have her tucked away in closet in my "purse vault ." I don't carry the duffle bag now but the memories of my Mom buying her for me at the long gone Jordan Marsh store at the iconic Shoppers World Mall in Natick, MA brings back some very happy moments. My Mom loved her purses and was my first enabler. I'm thinking about sending the duffle back to Coach for a spa treatment to restore her to her original beauty. She is from the era when Coach bags were made in NYC. My purse obsession has evolved over the years. I'm sure my Mom is watching over me and loving my Bottega Veneta collection. 'Miss you Mom!
I miss the old Shopper's World!!

If we're talking Designer Designer, then that would be Proenza Schouler PS1 Pouch in the color Sunshine. Quite an impulse purchase and frankly, In hindsight, I shouldn't've bought it - I only carried it a handful of times and it's been almost two years since I got it. But I guess we all have to learn what works and what doesn't and not every bag is a keeper.

My first luxury bag was a Louis Vuitton Pouchette Accessoires. I paid $165 for it in 2001. I bought it as a gift to myself for completing my teacher certification program.
