What's the difference between Asian/Japanese eyeshadow vs Western/US eyeshadow

Are there no US eyeshadows that are like Japanese eyeshadows? Are they really that unique?

I'm placing my first order on Imomoko and am looking for specific eyeshadow palette recommendations. Please let me know which palettes I should buy based on your recommendations (not just brands).

Thank you!

Hi Lola, I think it depends on what brand you are buying from. Some drugstore asian eyeshadows are very shimmery, which I personally love as it's very fine shimmer.

However, some of the more high end lines like Suqqu and Addiction have more refined finishes that are far superior in my opinion. I am a huge fan of the KATE line for neutrals, the gradical Eyes and Diamond Cut are my faves from the current line, also Glamtrick Eyes if you can find was one of the best KATE palettes!

HTH a little

Thank you so much Mira! I will definitely add a Kate palette to my order. I'm considering Esprique or Coffret D'or or Shiseido Integrate -- but I'm not sure which. I feel like I'm drowning in the choices and don't know which to choose. I've never tried any Japanese eyeshadows and I wonder if I will be disappointed when I receive my order. I have tons of US eyeshadow and I wonder if Japanese eyeshadows are really all the different. Are these Japanese eyeshadows going to give me something new that I don't already have in my collection? Is the shimmer or sparkle in Japanese shadows different from US stuff? Are they like Dior shadows?

One big difference I've noticed is, Japanese eyeshadows are much more sheer than Western eyeshadows. Subtlety is key, so if you're looking for a big color payoff, you might be disappointed. You can still get pretty defined colors if you pack the eyeshadow on (and really...PACK IT ON---think 4-5 layers), but in general, Japanese make-up emphasize more of the "natural beauty" style, so most of it is not bold.

They are definitely more on the sheer and shimmery side in comparison. Some brands can be even more shimmery than Dior's e/s.

Here are some brands I've tried and would recommend: Lunasol, Esprique, Coffret D'or, Paul & Joe, Majolica Majorca, KATE, and Lavshuca.

I cannot compare them to Dior, as I am not fond of the texture (apologies). But they are more of a sheer shimmer as oceansportrait and likeadoll. Unless you are looking at more highend brands where the textures can be more comparable to say Shu Uemura.

Integrate is very nice, although I still prefer KATE (jmo). Although Integrate Aqua Creamy ROuge Lipsticks are divine, but that's a whole other thing

I've fallen in love with Shu Uemura. But only the mattes and some pearls... every thing else is very glittery/sparkly/frosty.

Anyone else love Shu? And how does Shu compare to the Japanese brands that are harder to come by?

Good question... I've only purchased mine based on the unique packaging lol
I do notice they are somewhat on the sheer, shimmery side. But that doesn't mean they aren't pigmented.. just not as.. heavy looking ?

Thanks for all the helpful advice! I was going to originally order from imomoko but after reading blogs I found out about adam's beauty--they are so much cheaper! For example a bought a Lavshuca palette from Adam Beauty fro $14 that was listed at $29 on imomoko. I've never ordered from Adam Beauty before. I'd love to hear your experiences. How long did shipping take? Are the extra fees for customs or stuff like that?

I've purchased from AdamBeauty, great site with shipping only $2... took around a week ~ 2 weeks I believe...3 weeks max if it takes longer at customs. You can pay more for faster shipping.

AdamBeauty has the lowest prices from my experience.

FacialShop is second for prices + free shipping: http://www.facial-shop.com/
Again, same amount of time as AdamBeauty since they all ship from Hong Kong.

BeautiesHK moderate pricing, sometimes you can find a better deal than the other sites: http://www.beautieshk.com/eshop/index.php
Same shipping time frame.

Another moderately priced site, this one with different brand selection you might find rarer items on the other sites...: http://www.yesstyle.com/en/beauty.html

Other sites include a wider selection but are way more expensive because prices are in JPY: http://ichibankao.com/default.aspx
Shipping $4 for around 1~2 weeks

Don't buy from Gooddealer they didn't reply and ship my items once.:pout:

Happy Shopping!! :flowers:

^^ THANK YOU! I totally bow down to your expertise!

I ended up ordering 2 Lavshuca palettes (Melting eyes and Jewel) and one Coffret D'Or Jewelcious palette (#1). I also ordered a Skin79 Gold BB Cream. I did want to try Lunasol--maybe next time. This might be the start of a dangerous (meaning expensive) hobby of collecting Japanese makeup. Oh dear!
