I came from a low income family and spending $20 or more was a joke on a bag.... My brothers wife was rich and had every tote in the early 90's from Gucci...LV...Dooney and when I saw the prices...it seemed unreal. I asked her one day if I could borrow one of the smaller Dooneys and she said....No, you go to public school and they may steal it. I was bused to one of the top HS in the area...everyone had designer everything....drove BMWs etc...I was like WHAT??? I felt like crap. As soon as I got my 1st job I got a small Dooney and I would stand in the mirror at night and I was sooooooo happy!!! That feeling hasn't changed but my budget has!!! My husband grew a company and now we are pretty well off and at Christmas my sister in law is now asking "what is that bag" I am obsessed with Jimmy Choo, YSL, and currently sporting an off white brief Balenciaga and I love that now after kids and many bills and my brothers middle class pay...she sees the prices and finds it unreal!!! ;)

One of my clients came in for an appointment carrying a beautiful oak roxanne i then decided my aim for my 40th bday was my 1st brand new car and a mulberry roxanne my dd2 went off to university and life became more economical, but 3 years late i got the car and it seemed to have a mind of its own it kidnapped me and took me to the mulberry outlet, and only let me go home when a nice shopping bag was nestled into the front seat!
The rest is history!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went to Italy to studied abroad in college and learned the European way of quality vs quantity. As a student could not afford the Gucci purse I loved so settled on my first pair of designer sunlgasses Moschino. Once I graduated and $$$ started rolling in... I kicked off my bag obssesion with the Fendi Baguette when I was 22 and just bought myself a Balenciaga for my 33rd birthday last week. The obsession continues....

I got my 1st Coach bag in 11/05..Since that time I have a few Coach bags and I do not buy any other labels...Before Coach, I'd buy from walmart, tj-maxx etc...I love that I have found good quality bags and Long lasting as well....

I inherited my love for handbags from my mother. She's always carried a Gucci, Chanel, or LV bag for as long as I can remember. I'm now 26 and have a decent collection of my own, and she still continues to impress me (style-wise) with her purchases!

The concept of quality hand-made things. Living in America, everything seems mass-produced and nothing lasts very long before it falls apart. I like the idea of things staying in the family, being passed down for generations, and retaining value. I'm not the type to buy my decorations from Bed, Bath & Beyond.. real art versus mass-produced art, Indian decorations from trips versus Pier 1, etc.

I think I was 13 or 14 and was visiting family when this girl walked in looking like a rock star with a white Dior tucked under her arm and I realized that a bag could absolutely MAKE someone's look. Was obsessed with Dior for a long time after that. (Hence the screen-name - even though I don't follow anything but Dior's couture line anymore.)

But in undergrad, had a raw leather bag - I want to say Henry Cuir, but not sure; don't even know if that line was around then, actually; this is going to drive me crazy now - and everyone around me was forever mistaking it for an original all-weather leather bag from Coach or Dooney. And I realized that a bag can be the best way to make friends with other girls - it gives you an excuse to strike up conversations! Plus, the bag looked cooler the more it aged. And I've been hooked every since (although this past year, I've started to fall for jewelry more...)

What a fun thread!
It started in college and medschool, but only with Nine West and Guess. At that time, it wasn't the brand, but more what bag could carry my papers, highlighters and school stuff without looking like I'm going hiking (ie not a backpack!). Then during residency training, which was my first real job, I saved money for a Coach bag for my mom (her first Coach). Then I realized, wait a minute, I'm working looooong hours, I might as well reward myself for it. So I got one Coach bag for myself. But I only used it for special occasions, because it was my most expensive bag. So after a few months, I decided that I should get more bags so I don't keep saving that one bag for special occasions. I got another Coach, and another, and another... and several more. It got to a point that I was on first name basis with everyone in the store and the SAs would call me when something I liked came in. My husband would get me a bag when I finished a tough rotation during residency. For my birthday he gave me a lovely Tivoly LV. I loooove it. :yahoo: He finally figured out the secret: a great bag=happy wife= happy husband.

it started back in college when i bought my first Fendi...and used it religiously for a few years....but my bag addiction exploded when i moved overseas to Dubai and high end fashion is EVERYWHERE and in your face. all of a sudden my LV collection exploded and i had to collect a piece from every other fashion house! :p

I got my love for all things expensive and pretty from my mum, but my first actual purchase (I think) was a bright pink Kate Spade at the height of my pink obsession. I had to have it, and it was kind of downhill from there (and uphill price wise)

My addiction started when I was about 10. I always loved purses, I would go into my mom's closet and get her Coach's or Dooney's or LV's. I would spend my allowance on little cheapie bags, you know $30-$60. Then after high school I got my first job and a light bulb clicked, "why spend $30 here $80 there when I could save up and buy a better more expensive bag that will last longer?" So my first purchase wasa Dooney Itbag the ones Mischa Barton used to be the spokesperson for, then I moved on to Coach (revisited from my Mom's time) then to Tokidoki by LeSportSac (how could you not love them?), them LAMB, then Juicy which I still love, most of the time. But now my current obsession is Marc Jacobs, and Mulberry!

A few Christmases ago, my husband purchased an Antonio Melani leather bag that was so rich looking. He got it from Dillards and I remember feeling guilty because he purchased it at full price, which I think was $200 or $250. Of course, shortly after Christmas the sales price dropped to 1/2. After that, I decided never to pay full price for a bag again unless it was highly sought after and unavailable at most places.

I remember that bag, though, because it was gorgeous and was the nicest bag I had ever owned until that point. He filled each zipper pocket and the two front saddle pockets with cash and gift cards and a few small beauty items (lipstick, mascara, stuff like that). It was so much fun opening each pocket to see what he had stashed inside.

This has become somewhat of a tradition now and I am sure he probably regrets starting it! My taste in bags has only gotten richer and my bags have higher price points now. LOL. I typically purchase the bag on my own (to make sure I get what I want...color, style, brand, etc) and now he fills up the pockets on his own :)

For me the addiction started when I was a freshman in college and bought my first "designer" bag . . . a small Coach signature flap. It was a quick fall down the slippery slope of designer purses from there.
