i have the cordless dyson that comes with different attachements..can't remember the name...
my house is mostly laminate/hardwood so it works great for that. not so great for carpet which is only in my bedroom but I have an old bissel I use for that.

The only vacuum Ive ever used, the Electrolux Canister with the Carpet attachment. Not the one you can buy at dept stores,etc., but the one you can only buy from the authorized Electrolux Sales Stores.

I've got a Dyson, I think it's the DC50 (the small canister one for apartments). It's fantastic. It's very light to drag behind me and fits in the front closet without taking up too much space. When we got our pug (who basically sheds another pug every week) I was worried it wouldn't be able to handle the fur since it wasn't the animal version-but it does a great job.
