Sorry, but outside of religious and cultural reasons, I actually don't see the problem with pig skin...it's still a form of leather, like deerskin or calfskin or snake skin etc. ><

*Should anyone read this in the future let me give you some info on Gucci Pig Skin*

Just before the onset of WWII Mussolini invaded Ethiopia and 20+ countries signed a trade embargo on Italy. Gucci could no longer get hides from France, Switzerland, etc... so they had so source products at home. Aldo Gucci found a company which supplied pigskin, the texture was so unique and different that he started incorporating it into the products. It became a signature style for Gucci, and they've been using it ever since. In 1971 Gucci purchased the ranch.

Interested, I had no idea.

Well I'm happy, one of my BTHs is pigskin :D.

I noticed when I was on a hunt for gloves for BF, pigskin was more expensive than any other 'normal' leather.

Does anyone know the kind of leather that is used to construct the Guccissima handbags and accessories? I hope it is not pigskin.:yucky:

Calfskin

Pigskin is much more expensive to source and produce than calfskin

I think the Jolicoeur, Charmy, Princy all are.

Oh, my Jolicoeur is definately pigskin. You can really tell the difference in the bag's base posted below. Although it is way more durable than calf's, I do feel like it can look like faux leather in some lights. Not sure if I'd buy pigskin again. It just feels too much like faux, cheap bags. You just don't have the luxurious soft leather feel.

So there is a great conclusion to my drama. I got the Abbey platino today!!!:yahoo: I called the Gucci in downtown and they said they would look for it and called me back a few hours later and i guess there are only 4 left in the whole country and she had one!!! So my dear husband went and picked it up...i :heart:the packaging and the box. it was seriously so pretty!! I am soooo happy! the bag is gorgeous, and the leather is soooo much softer and nicer than the black abbey. I am sooo delirious with happiness. Thanks to all you girls who helped me out.... oh btw..ill post pics tomm!!

Trulyobsessed - Congrats! I am so glad things worked out for you. :yahoo: I too have similar religious/cultural concerns and really appreciate your starting this thread!! Cheers!!

I love pigskin more than the calfskin because they are sturdier. Although I understand the thread starter's dilemma because of religious reasons. It also made me wonder whether those who hold cows as sacred use LV bags with vachetta (or any cowhide bags for that matter). I know that unlike Hermes, leather types on Gucci bags are not THAT much of a big deal for most people but I would love to see a thread created to document leather types and color as well *wishful thinking*
