What jewelry do you travel with? (Specifically Fine Jewelry)

This depends on why I'm traveling and to where.
If I'm traveling on business, I bring:
1) pearl or diamond studs
2) A nice pendant

If I'm traveling on a hike, or to the beach, I bring NO jewelry.

If I'm traveling on vacation, or to a wedding, I bring only the jewelry that I really NEED with the outfit.

I mostly travel with my studs, diamond ring, and diamond pear necklace and I NEVER leave anything in the hotel safe, had bad experience and I don't trust leaving my jewelry anywhere

Silver. I travel with silver and stainless steel. Cheaper, easy to replace, not a target for thieves (unless its branded like Tiffany's heart things, but mine isn't so its fine). Silver looks pretty, and my investment in it isn't great so I feel safer.

IF I am going somewhere where I need jewelry--I take insured pieces only and use the hotel safe when not in use.

I am having a huge battle in my head about whether or not to bring/wear my diamond studs on my trip to visit my inlaws. ..<snip>...Is that something I should leave behind?

My rulr of thumb for vacation and business trips is this - If I would be heartbroken to lose it, I leave it home. I already lost two pair of earrings that I miss over and over again. Never again.

The only exceptions I make are: (1) If there is to be a special event and I really want the particular jewelry to 'make' the outfit, then I take it. and (2) If I am visiting the person who gave me the jewelry and they will be hurt if I do not wear it, then maybe... Again, depends on how valuable it is.

Like others have said: I don't trust hotel safes; I don't trust hotel cleaning staff; and I do not want the hassle of registering the pieces with Customs on the way out of the country just to avoid another hassle on the way back in.

And I apologize if I missed this in a search, compress if I did.

I am having a huge battle in my head about whether or not to bring/wear my diamond studs on my trip to visit my inlaws. I only usually wear them 1-2 times a week, and that's like the HIGH end of my wear. Usually I just wear/bring my wedding set. Is that something I should leave behind?

Take them! My studs have been to more states than I can count as well as Mexico (x3), Costa Rica, Italy, Germany and Israel.

I also just traveled to Israel last month with my ering and two stackers. I never really took anything off longer than overnight while I was sleeping.

yea Ill do it. I take everything off/out at night. :)

I want to get use out of them, cost me 700 dollars so I wanna at least have a decent cost per wear lol

I travel overseas every year and I no longer travel with expensive jewelry.
I have lost a diamond stud earring two times (two different pairs). The first time I replaced it. The second time I didn't bother. And now I know they can be lost and it's really not fun.
These days, I put my really nice things in a safe before I leave and travel with "fun" pieces. This is true especially when I know I will be spending a lot of time on the beach, swimming in hotel pools, etc.

I travel for work all the time, both within north america and also internationally... I have never claimed my jewellery. I just walk through customs with my usual everyday stuff.
diamond studs
diamond necklace (st onge) small tiny treasures necklace by roberto coin
DBTY platinum bracelet
and a RHR and stacking ring.

customs just does a quick scan of my luggage, sometimes a random body scan if i'm picked and im good to go!

not to mention the company I work for....usually I have about 30 watches with me. some samples and some live product. and customs never even asks me why I have so many watches!!!

so I guess i dont understand why you have to "claim" your jewellery?:shrugs: I understand if you have lost pieces while travelling but I just dont get the fear of customs thing...somebody enlighten me!!!

Just my diamond stud earrings which I wear them all the time, even in the shower and to bed.

And if I'm going for a nice meal, maybe my wedding band which is from the celebration ring collection from Tiffany. Otherwise, even this gets left at home.

it's my understanding that you claim the things you've bought in the country other than your own in customs...not your own personal possessions. you have to pay tax on what you bought outside your own country if the value is over a certain amount.

ya i figured that, but i have heard of a few cases on tpf where people have said they dont bring their jewellery so they dont have to claim it....or people that have been given a hard time at customs with certain personal belongings???

i've just never had these issues so i'm interested to hear about it...

I wear something low-key like my sterling Torque triple bead pendant. I also wear a simple watch and a band of some sort on my left ring finger. I never bother with an earring or bracelet. Diamonds aren't my favorite and I certainly wouldn't wear them on vacation.

If I feel uncomfortable I stick my left hand in my pocket, roll my sleeve over my watch, and tuck my pendant inside my shirt. I also keep suede pouches in my pocket for everything except the watch, which was under $500 anyway.

Saligator makes a valid argument. All of my jewelry is branded but I choose to wear silver pieces without a prominent logo on them. They make me feel confident but hardly anyone guesses their origins.

I cannot say about USA customs, but here in Canada, you can get randomly pulled aside and searched. People have been accused of having purchased jewellry on the trip they are returning from, when in fact they may have owned it already for some time. So you ought to travel with proof of purchase and it is recommended that you register the piece on the way out of the country so as to avoid that hassle on the way back in. Same goes for cameras and other expensive equipment that you may take with you.
As for commercial samples, Canada Customs requires you to declare those and pay the appropriate duties and taxes on them. Commercial samples are not allowed to be covered under your personal exemptions. That said, people do smuggle all the time. But if you get caught, you pay the duty and taxes and a fine and a note goes on your file for a period of months and years, making you a target for further searches on each and every subsequent trip. Snowbirds often have such stories to tell.
If you travel a lot for work, the inconvenience and hassle is not worth the few dollars you save by smuggling.
As for me personally, I have not recently been stopped and searched. I am more likely to get pulled out and searched at the security gates than I am at Customs, for whatever reason (likely my colouring and facial structure). On the other hand I don't set myself up for trouble at Customs, either. In Canada, our tax free allowances are less generous than in the USA, I believe also - but it does vary, depending on how long you are gone from the country.
So, as I said before, if I would be upset to lose it, I don't take it on the trip.

I don't recommend that you bring them with you; obviously these earrings are very special to you and I'm sure that if something happens to them you would be very heartbroken... For traveling don't even risk it, just bring your daily pieces.
