What is your comfortable amount to spend on handbags?

Depends on the bag. With the income I have and the way I live, I buy contemporary brands and nearly always pay max 50% of normal prices, so around 300€ is my limit. For that amount of money I expect to get a bag that is fault free and will serve me for years. I buy bags so I can use them, not just display them or hide them in the cupboard.

I think Chanel was in the right price category 10-15 yrs ago, after that things have gotten so out of hand it's just ridiculous.

+1 with @anna2b2 re chanel and Dior.

bur it really depends on the bag. I don’t think so much about resale value as cost per wear over a number of years.

I do not pay higher than retail for myself (normally 40-50% less). I once paid over retail for my mom, for her 75th birthday present. I would not pay crazy reseller prices for any bag.

Since I buy both retail list price and well priced preloved vintage, I kind of average out the two to make myself feel better.

I haven’t gotten into branded exotics yet (maybe never), so the prices for regular leather are high but not in the stratosphere like some TPFers here.

@mocktail, I have to confess that I wasnt comfortable with the price of the BV pouch (wasn’t sure I would wear it enough to justify cost per wear) so I got an Etsy inspired one for under 300 USD and love that. It’s so interesting to read about our similarities and differences

I feel that varies depending on my disposable income. As I have gotten older and earned more money, I have become more comfortable...hmm, that doesn't sound right... how about, more used to spending more money. :P

The more I spend the picker I get though. Needs to meet my expectations for my hard earned money.
Currently around $5,000.
If I ever get the chance to buy a birkin, I'm gonna have to work a lot harder!

"Comfortable" meaning I don't really need to think about/plan the purchase would be around $300.

The most I've spent was $3,500 for my Chanel reissue mini last year. That was hard to stomach and I think "roughly the price of a Chanel mini" is my max for the foreseeable future.

I just recently got a Bottega Veneta Pouch, so at most I'll only get 1 more luxury bag this year.

Like most responses, it depends on the bag and the brand. Generally speaking, I prefer to spend no more than $3k on premier designers and no more than $500 on a contemporary brand. I'm also a bit of a bargain hunter so I try to wait until the sales when possible. I've been lucky enough to have purchased a few of my premier designer bags for under $1k, although I feel like the really good deals are becoming harder and harder to come by.

Re the Chanel price increases: I bought my caviar mini flap a few years ago at ~$3k. It now costs $4.4k (outside my comfort range). It wouldn't surprise me if, in another couple of years, a mini flap will retail for as much as $6k. The price increases are crazy and have completely turned me off the brand.

Omg, for Chanel, pretty much the same for me! I got a vintage small Chanel classic flap beginning last year for $3400. Had to take a leap of faith. It did stress me out a bit because it came all the way from Australia but I am very happy with it. (specifically went for vintage because I wanted gold plated hardware) It was the only luxury purchase of 2020 for me. And with the Chanel prices now, oof .

At this point in my life, 2k. I'm younger than many here who have been collecting for years and have more income. My most expensive bag retailed at 2600 but I got it for 1400 on a flash sale. I think the most I've paid was 2k for an LV bag. I could see paying more as I get older. But I honestly dislike the way Chanel looks and wouldn't buy it for any amount of money. Same for most Hermès.

I bet your Etsy one is gorgeous, too! :flowers: The BV Pouch is expensive, but I've loved it since it came out and I think I'll use it enough to get a good cost per wear. I get anxious in some situations so cradling the Pouch is almost like holding a security blanket or something

I'd love to get a Kelly Pochette or Kelly Cut someday, but I think when you add their cost plus the pre-spend to get an offer they're wayyyyy out of my budget! Maybe in a few years...

No more than $5k unless its Hermes, maybe. I think I may be done with Chanel now after this last insane price increase. I get that they want to compete with Hermes, but this is getting ridiculous. I will stick with the Chanel bags I have already although I had wanted a Chanel 19 and I think I am throwing in the towel now.
