What is PVC material?

What makes me laugh is Vegan bags made of PVC and marketed as eco-friendly and cruelty free. Sure, no animals were harmed in making it, but it's made of chemicals and is rarely recycled (most PVC ends up in landfills).

Thank u so much for telling me what pvc is. I just bought a handbag from burberry & when I got it the handles were hard and it felt fake to me. I called them & they told me it was leather coated handles. It doesn't smell like leather, look or feel it. I just read what evryone wrote and I'm sending the bag back. I dont want anything on my bag thats pvc. Not for the MONEY I pd.
I feel stupid for buying this without knowing.

Thanks again everyone, :smile1:

Sorry it didn't work out, but glad you are able to return it. :smile1:

I understand how you are feeling. I am glad you made good decision for you. I personally love Burberry.

Thanks, I returned it yesterday. I also like Burberry and I still will, on someone else;) I saved up some money for a good bag but just don't know what to get?? It seems like everyone has coach? Why? Am I missing something here? This is coming from a person that has cheap bags. My husband said it's about time I spent some money on myself and get a good bag. (Meaning something in style and not so ugly) lol

There are a lot of nice mid-range bags aside from Coach out there that you can get for a decent price and are mae of leather! Try looking into Linea Pelle, Marc By Marc Jacobs, Kooba, Rebecca Minkoff (some are pvc, be sure to check), Treesje, Botkier, etc. via the subforums. Even the bags that go for around $500-$600 new can be found on sale at great prices. :smile1:

I have nothing against PVC, I had a Nine West bag made of pvc that I loved and got a ton of compliments on, I wore it until it wore out. I sure wouldn't pay a high price for a bag made of PVC though, no way, I don't care what brand name is on it.

I have a coworker who is an avid animal lover and vegan. She would only buy PVC or canvas. She angrily stares at the rest of us who dares to wear leather bags and shoes.

PVC is essentially plastic. While I much prefer real leather's look and feel and all my serious bags are always leather, I think PVC is practical for a summer fun bag. It dyes easily and can have a wide range of colors. The material is good for wet days. No to mention it's usually much less expensive. :smile1:

I actually like coated canvas material, I know it's coated with PVC, but I have one bag for naaasty weather like that. HOWEVER... I only paid $40 for it (down from $100). And I don't want to buy any more of them, because I agree with others, they don't degrade well in landfills and are not eco-friendly IMO.

i like coated canvas alot -- is that the same thing as PVC? -- i like how you can toss it around, beat the daylights out of it -- seems like it will last forever.

with designer brands you are hopefully paying for QUALITY... whether its PVC or leather --

im sure there are even levels of quality in PVC products -- what you get from Bloomingdales versus Canal Street in NYC...

but of course you are also paying for the Name. The marketing campaign :)

would love to see a pic of your $300 PVC bag! I bet its adorable! If you love how it looks, and its functionality and would get a lot of use out of it -- who cares if it is PVC or leather?

:)

i think it's canvas, then it's coated with PVC.
A straight PVC bag is just PVC throughout.
I have a coated canvas bag, it's 1.5 yrs old, and I carry it every day pretty much, especially since it's getting into a rainy season here. It still looks new. I got 1 scuff on it once, and I was able to rub it out with my finger, and now it's completely gone. I love it.

my leather bags don't look this new after daily wear for a year.

This is why I only go to Payless for my dd patent leather shoes. Because @ $75 no SA can fool me. I just have to look inside and read "All manmade" - Another term for plastic!

PVC is called "poison plastic" and is toxic under certain circumstances. Toys "R" Us was called to stop selling toys that are made out of PVC, along with many other stores. Why they are making purses out of this, I have no idea. It is probably because they can use this material to make a purse look shiny or have a variety of different colors, but at what cost. I would not buy a purse made out of PVC.
