What IS it with Birkins?

For me, I think it is a combination of shape, smell, touch, feel, adaptability, enduring but current style, understated but unsurpassed design and practicality. . .it really does feel different from any other bag I have ever owned and despite its price I use it every day and feel it is an 'exclusive' bag that can withstand 'humdrum' living - in my experience that is pretty rare!
I don't own a Birkin but yes, I was lured to Hermes it is because of Birkins 
1. Hype - yes, it's the most sought after bags, there are ladies who buy them because of that. I for one, is also guilty of that, but without searching and learning about the birkins, I would have not found this forum.
2. Easy to use bag - I can totally see it, it's designed as a tote, tons of stuff fit in and this is the kind of bag that I term "bottomless pits". Everything can fit in and yes, things will get lost inside. With this reason, it is also a popular choice.
Due to the bottomless pit nature of this bag, I can see myself wanting one but am dreading the weight.
It's really a personal choice. I like the Kelly for the simple quiet elegance and it able to go undetected and under the radar. Birkin on the other hand, will never be quiet or is it possible to be under the radar. Just my 2 cents.

For me, it's the fact that it's a classic bag. I have some Birkins that I got from my Mom as far bag as 10 yrs ago, and today it's still look as trendy as it was before. No other bags (except maybe a Kelly) can compare to its lasting looks.
i think there definitely IS something about the birkin... i have a 35cm and it's so functional, carries a ton of stuff, but still looks great. in fact, many times i've been stopped by ladies who i don't think are familiar with hermes or birkins, and they just say that is a NICE bag! i don't get that comment about any of my other bags!

The fact that it is a classic, you can use it 10 years down the road and it will still look hot! Both Chanel and Hermes is definately my choice for now. 
i like birkin because of its chic-ness, its high resale value (just in case i got bored someday), it's a classic, it will never be on sale, i agree with starrystar, at the moment only chanel and hermes for me!
Just speaking of the bag, not the brand caché, and allure of the birkin, just the bag...
Apart from the price issue, it is a beautlfully made, flattering bag made in literally hundreds of unique combinations of skin/color/hardware/size. The right birkin can go from day to night and back, and it can be as comfortable in a boardroom as in a park on a picnic. It can go casual or haute, it can be fun or serious.
It smells good. You can special order just what you want, it can be tiny or huge, and it doesnt make your butt look big. And it can be refurbished, and will last a lifetime. What more can you possibly want in a bag!!!
There are other H bags I prefer for myself at this point, but thats not to say there isnt one in my future, but it will likely be a HAC...
