What happens when you dunk a bag that shouldn't get wet?

WOW!! Super job you did on those three bags! I have the first bag from the Sheridan line here. It is black and tan of course no hang tag.. got it at thrift shop. The black pebbled leather looks new as does the interior...it doesn't look to have been used much at all. Unfortunately when I gave it a wipe down with a damp cloth the tan rolled edging lifted away and split apart on one of the rear corners about one inch long...any suggestions as to maybe gluing it back together?
Sorry can't post any pics yet as I just joined and still a newbie :)

That's too bad, when the piping splits I don't know of any way to repair except perhaps taking it to a leather expert or cobbler for professional replacement. It wouldn't hurt just to ask for a professional opinion.

You might try fabric glue. Go to a fabric or craft store like JoAnn's Fabrics and look for fabric glue that says it will work on leather. If nothing else that might stabilize the area and keep it from tearing further.

It sounds like the leather is very dried out and you should use a good leather conditioner on the tan trim. Don't use an opaque conditioner on the pebbled leather. When I condition a pebbled leather bag I use leather therapy oil.

Good luck!

Thank you katev for all your helpful information. I did take the bag into a pro leather expert and he said the trim has rotted in that location. The trim would have to be replaced and that would be super expensive and not worth the money. Too bad cause the pebbled leather looks new. I will try the leather glue and hope for the best I guess. Too bad the original owner didn't look after the bag.
Thanks again....you are so knowledgeable and I appreciate it......and your bags turned out super!!! Would have never thought of the washing machine...lol!!

Here are the after photos, the smell is gone and the color still looks great! The hangtag was missing but I love the way this brass replacement hangtag looks with the color of bag.

I guess the moral of this story is “When the bath is the only option left for your Coach bag, don’t be afraid to try it because it might be the best thing to do!”

You are so brave! I would never think of washing leather. All three bags came out great.
Since you are such an expert, do you know how to get smoke smell out of coated canvas? I bought a leah on ebay and it reeks. If I can't get the smell out I am going to have to hope the seller will take it back.

Nice work on these my friend! I agree about throwing the bags in the wash if they can't be helped otherwise. I just threw 2 $1 garage sale finds in the wash this week. Thing is, they were suede!!! Both of the bags were stained with water damage and grime and I threw them in a handwashing cycle. One dried to almost mint condition, and the other was so bad off, it could not be saved, but looked cleaner. So yes, good work!
That is amazing! I have a suede bag that is in pretty good condition, but there are a few spots. When I tried to work on them with water and cleaner though, they got worse. Do you know what I can use for spots that won't water stain the suede? TIA

You have to be pretty desperate to do this, but seriously, I just sprayed some stain remover on the bags, threw them in a pillow case and put them on a hand washing cycle in the wash with some fragrance and dye free gentle liquid detergent. Got them out before the spin cycle and stuffed them with towels and let them dry. There was a bit of color dye that washed out of the bags, but for me, it was worth it. After they dried, the bags were cleaner and I just worked them with my hands to soften them up a bit. This bag seriously turned out excellent. Here is an after photo. The before condition showed clear water/wet stain damage.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Your purple suede bag looks great! What kind of stain remover did you use on it?

I agree that the washing machine is the last resort but when there is no way you can carry the bag because of it's condition; then it is worth trying. And it is easier to do when you picked the bag up cheaply at a garage sale or thrift store.

I just found a beige/camel, canvas Bleecker bag at the Salvation Army and it is badly stained. I may not be able to rehab it but I want to try and I think that it may eventually require a trip through the washing machine. Here are the before pics, let me know if you have any suggestions, thanks!

THANKS ;-). For the suede, I just did a spray and wash type of spot cleaner. Just a quick all over once over.

For your canvas bag, I would do a pre spot treatment on the canvas with something like era. Something that will break down those stains on an enzyme level. Let it sit for a while and then do a very light scrubbing with a soft toothbrush (on the canvas only). Then throw it in the wash on the handwash cycle and see what happens.:-)

Thanks, your bag looks great. It doesn't look like you lost much color.
