I’ve been pretty good about following the one in, one out rule for my bags over the past few years. This spring I bought two new bags and sold two for example, and then I received one for Mother’s Day. I now have 11 bags and that feels like too many for me, but I have a few that I am unable to part with due to sentimental reasons. For example, I remember buying this Michael Kors crossbody when I was in grad school. The leather is absolutely fabulous and it can hold quite a bit, despite the compact size. I hardly ever reach for it anymore but I have so many memories tied to it, like saying yes to my dress and running around the city getting ready for my wedding. So I’m trying to let go of the guilt of possessing so many things that I don’t necessarily need or use because the sentimental value is worth it.

Here is another one. I think purses are important for safety issues. I remember there was a time in my life that I would only carry wallets/wristlets. I went grocery shopping and after I was done I drove home not realizing that I left my wallet on the cart. I drove back to the store and I saw my wallet on the shopping cart outside. It has all my cards, my DL, everything. I live in a place where identity theft is high. This lady saw me and she said, "Oh my goodness, thank goodness you found it." Ever since then if I need to be hands free I carry a crossbody. Especially when grocery shopping. Ever since that experience I started carrying purses and have come to enjoy them.

In this situation, you follow the Marie Kondo rule: does it spark joy? If it does, keep it!

What always makes me happy is the moment my new expensive bag shows its first little mark or color transfer. I always celebrate it. It's the moment the bag is really mine. I know it will happen anyway eventually and after it happened I feel way less stressed about carrying my new baby.

That’s a nice way of turning something that many of us see as a negative into a positive.

Your post came to mind today when I noticed some scratching on the hardware of my newest bag. My heart definitely sank a little at first, but then I reminded myself that wear and tear is inevitable and this bag is more uniquely mine now. So thank you for sharing that!

Things I remind myself of when I’m tempted to buy another handbag:
1.You don’t have to own every beautiful handbag.
2. Sometimes less really is more.
3. There are other less expensive ways to accessorize.
4. There Are better ways of spending my disposable income. e.g. self care, personal training lessons, vacays, learning a skill, etc.
5. Often too much of something sometimes makes it less special.
6. Theres a fine line between collecting and hoarding.
7. I can only wear one bag at a time
8. I don’t need 5 bag options for any one outfit
9. I’m not a celebrity or a socialite so I won‘t use an excessive amount of bags
10. Too many options can be overwhelming..as I don’t want to feel the need to change and use all of my handbags all of the time.
11. buying a handbag will always be easier than selling it
Love this!
