To all girls that Cashmere has loved before............if I am in the wrong thread...please let me know. I have but one question about the Cashmere's.........how does one maintain these shawls without getting snags ?? I am at a loss as to what happens with this material.....does it snag if you touch it.....literally ? I love the Kachina design and have it in most colors. I bought a light colored one....wrapped it around my shoulders to see it and then put it away. Sold it recently and buyer found a snag !!!! This shawl came from an actual Hermes store !!! What "careful" things must one do to avoid snags ?
Can they be repaired OR does the snag get bigger ? Thank you !

oh, and what I forgot, I read somewhere that the Kanthas is from 2008 and this year they had problems of the qulity and some of the GMs from this year are more delicate than the ones from others...
I don´t know if this is true though as I did not purchase anything then....
sorry OT again...

Keratins that are specific to hair, nail or wool have a pH of 4.7–5.4 so cleansing within that range is much more gentle on the fibres, yes.

can you suggest an acidic detergent? like i said before, most detergents are basic so i'd love to know what detergent should be used on cashmere/wool.

I have had great results actually using DermOrganic shampoo on my cashmere GMs. It has a pH of 4.5 - 5.5 and is sulfate/dye free.
I start with 2 tubs of water, first I wet the GM thoroughly in one tub of cool water (it stops the fibers absorbing detergent, like sticking an already wet sponge in water - it absorbs less because it's already soaked) then I dissolve 1tsp of the DermOrganic in the other tub of cool water and very lightly agitate the GM with my fingers.
Pressing, not wringing, remove it from the soapy water and rinse it in a couple of fresh tubs of cool water until the water is clear.
Again, only pressing the water out gently, they dry quickly spread out on a towel, the hems stay plump and I don't get any piling or fuzziness.
Very easy! ;)

I once had a snag in a new shawl after only wearing once so I brought it back to Hermes and they had it fixed but it costed me US$60. And so when I found another one in another older shawl that I have, I tried to fix it myself using a small needle.

I just picked up the thread with the small needle and pull gently. The shawl was full of colors, so I needed to pull it so that the part of the thread with the right colors are pulled back to their original spot. It took me a long time and my eyes were strained but it looked perfect again! So as long as the thread is not broken, you can still fix it. Now I no longer fear snags in my shawls.

That is a great idea !!!! I will definately give it a try. It is just so unfortunate that these expensive shawls snag so darn easy !!!!! I agree with you....it may give me a better ah-ha about wearing it !!!! Thank you kindly !!!

Thank you.....it is discouraging somewhat and I do believe that someone mentioned it that the older shawls seem to be more "sturdy". One wonders what they are trying to accomplish.............fool us by making.....dare I say.......cheaper shawls !!!!! Thank you kindly for the info......it brought that reference back to memory.....I may just quit buying them !!!

Thanks for this, BritAbroad... May I ask, where can we buy this shampoo, and do you steam or iron the GMs after? Thanks.

Sure, I'd go to www.dermorganic.com (I'm in no way affiliated) and click on their "find a distributor" link and see if one is close to you. Alternately, it is also sold on eBay if you check out a reputable seller with good feedback.
It also happens to be one of my favorite hair care lines in general (I was in the salon industry for 20 years prior to getting my nursing degree) so it's worth trying on both you and your GMs!
I have never needed to steam or press my GMs after washing them, but I live in a very dry climate so they dry very quickly here. I'd consider steam ironing a GM with a sheet inbetween as a buffer.
I know some lucky tPFers have great relationships with particular dry cleaners for their GMs but I don't trust mine not to press the hems so I'd rather do my own :p

Thank you for such detailed info. I'll definitely give it a try. I got lucky so far with washing my silks, but with the the cashmere GMs I hesitate a little due to the price if I damage it :smile1: Thanks again.

I understand that the best products for laundering Hermes Shawls are made by The Laundress. I apologize if this has been answered before, but I was wondering which product is most recommended, and any tips/advice. I am asking for myself as well as a good friend.

Thank you in advance for your help.
