I hand washed one this weekend and it turned out fine. I followed the instructions for washing Hermes silks, wrapped in a clean towel to remove excess moisture and then dried flat. It cleaned beautifully. It is lovely and soft and drapes even better than before it was washed.
I Just finished handwashing mine with woolite (i add a non diying tissue) - following your instructions - it turns great - it seems also the pulls are gone - (that's good news !)
waiting impatiently tomorrow mornin when it will be dryed !
so happy !
thanks to all of you H Ladies !

I just wanted to mention, for those who are using a baby shampoo to wash their cashmere GMs, in the belief that it is a gentle detergent, it is not at all gentle on natural fibers. It is one of the highest pH shampoos on the market, designed to cleanse virgin hair rapidly and not to irritate eyes, which range in pH from 7.0 - 7.3
This has a 'roughing' effect on natural fibers, giving a fluffy feeling but it is not good for the fiber's long term integrity.
It's strong enough to break down the disulfide bonds in hair, just like a perm, only you are relying on durational oxidation to neutralize it.

I just wouldn't recommend it for use on your cashmere shawls ladies...

To all girls that Cashmere has loved before............if I am in the wrong thread...please let me know. I have but one question about the Cashmere's.........how does one maintain these shawls without getting snags ?? I am at a loss as to what happens with this material.....does it snag if you touch it.....literally ? I love the Kachina design and have it in most colors. I bought a light colored one....wrapped it around my shoulders to see it and then put it away. Sold it recently and buyer found a snag !!!! This shawl came from an actual Hermes store !!! What "careful" things must one do to avoid snags ?
Can they be repaired OR does the snag get bigger ? Thank you !

Like anything delicate, you should be careful when you are wearing jewelry. I think that causes the most pulls on any delicate fabric. Some of the newer shawls seem a little thinner than previous years and that could contribute to the problem.

I love to wear brooches on jackets/coats, but I do not mix them with shawls ever because I fear snags and pulls. Any necklace or ring with stones in prong settings are equally a problem.

Shawls from boutiques CAN have pulls and holes. Note that it may have been on display and tried on by a couple of customers. Not all customers handle shawls with care (or know how to...).
You can read these for info on a place in Italy that restores cashmere shawls (contact in the next link):

I inspect all of my shawl and carre purchases before walking out of a store. That's a lot of money for assumptions.

Also, if you drive, make sure the shawl/scarf is positioned on top of the seat belt (avoid snags) and check to make sure the shawl doesn't get stuck at the car door.

Thank you for the suggestions......they are such delicate wonders, but worth it !!

Thank you for all of the great pointers....but the one that hit me and I mean HIT me was checking it BEFORE I leave the store !!! How dumb can I be....people could actually try it on or the Staff could leave it on a manniquin !!!! Will not let that happen again !!!!!!

Good one !!!!

Great point, gracekelly - I just got a monster pull in one of my fave GMs from the prong on a ring. I used to wear the ring all the time and was pretty careful, but I got distracted. The ring is now in my jewelry box...

pH 7 - 7.3 is neutral. are you saying we should use detergent that has a lower pH and thus more acidic? note that most detergents are basic.

I have washed my gm's by hand in my laundry room sink as well as (gasp) in a lingerie bag on the delicate cycle of my front loader washing machine. I hang them to dry then gently press with steam iron when still slightly damp. They have turned out great both ways.

As I love cashmere I have quite some cardigans and jumpers and due to my lifestyle I just wear them and had so many holes in them so far. the same with pulls on my GMs. I have a wonderful tailoring specialized in these problems and they always did wonderful work.
sorry, off topic, what I want to say is YES, they can be REPAIRED!!!!
