1. Diamond studs, the largest, best cut you can afford.
2. Gold hoops: YG, WG, RG. All 3 if you can. I love Charles Garnier hoops, i own 5. I'm still looking for a RG pair. Don't know if Charles Garnier makes them at the moment
3. Diamond pendant, small and dainty looks beautiful.
4. Watch
5. Yor style of bracelet. Cartier love and diamond tennis is on my wish list.

Pearl studs are great too. I have the cheapest pair of mikimotos which were $150. I think they r 5 or 6 mm. Would love a larger size. Might give those to my soon to be 3yr old and get me something larger.

Hmmmm what are mine. I've been rebuilding my collection since we were robbed 2 years ago so have really condensed my collection down to classic items.
1. Diamond Studs - I have 4 sets that are all slightly different, and I wear my half carat ones the most.
2. Classic necklace you wear everyday. Tiffany is a great place to start, then as your taste (and budget) matures, Cartier & VCA.... they are my favs. I will hand all my silver Tiffany over to my daughter (if i have one!) or niece when she is a teenager. (since the robbers obviously didnt want white gold or silver - they actually left it all - i still have all mine)
3. Classic watch. I started with a chunky mens Armani........ which my husband stole when I got a rolex.
4. Classic bracelet - I have a diamond tennis bracelet my Dad bought me for my 30th (which is stunning) but I wear my pandora bracelets all the time as I love them the most.
5. Right hand ring. I am still hunting for my perfect one since robbers stole my Grandmothers 3ct diamond band - and I will not be rushed - am thinking a diamond micro pave set band around 1cm in width which would be a classic.

I know I am going to go against the grain, but here goes.

1. Classic Tank Watch w/black Croc band.
2. Chunky Gold Hoops
3. Verdura Criss Cross Bracelet or classic statement bracelet
4. Chunky Gold Chain
5. Great Gold Ring

I will post pics, but I feel these pieces will take you from work to black tie with ease.

If I could add five more pieces, I would add.

6. Fantastic strand of pearls, 32".
7. Large pearl studs
8. Statement ring
9. Diamond studs
10. Diamond tennis bracelet(s)

I will post pics but I need to gather the items and have a photo shoot.

diamond stud earrings
diamond solitaire necklace

OP, definitely these two ^^. They're classic and versatile.

Re the other three - I think it's anything you want as people's tastes differ. I saw a "nice watch" in a bunch of lists but a lot of people don't wear watches anymore (myself included). Pearls were also frequently mentioned but I think they can be viewed as more "mature" for an older woman. If you like rings then I vote for saving up for a fabulous one you'll enjoy for years :smile1:

Love reading everyone's lists, so much fun!

My top 5:
diamond studs
pearl studs
a good man's watch
pearl necklace / or a cute pendant of good quality, diamond or pearl or both :)
a good/dressy ring

About the pearls, I think they are fab, I'm wearing pearls since I was a teen when I got my first pair of pearl earrings and pearl ring from my god mother. I can't imagine life without a pearl necklace, I mean even with the least feminine clothes & no make up you can wear it and feel pretty. It doesn't have to be South Seas huge pearls, smallish pearls are easier to wear. I don't think they are matronly. They are matronly if you wear Chanel suits on a daily basis and make you hair like Margaret Thatcher. BUT Even Marg looks amazing when she wears them.

Great thread! When I started my jewelry collection in my 20s I started with these must haves:
1) Pearl studs- you can dress it up or you can use it with casual clothes too!
2) diamond earrings
3) Gold hoops
4) Gold necklace ( or diamond solitaire necklace)
5) watch ( or bracelet/bangle)

Thank you for your advice! I found all my so called "fashion" jewelry finally ended up thrift stores. I could have something nice and long-lasting if I hadn't bought all these stuff. :thinkin:

Same here. Now I rarely buy costume jewelry, although I have a few pieces I like to wear when I'm going to be with people who have fallen on hard times.

My 5 would be:

1. 1" gold hoop earrings
2. a large eye-catching ring
3. a carved gold band
4. pearl necklace
5. a nice watch

Gah, I can't believe I couldn't put any bracelets on there. 5 isn't enough!

Please, can you post a photo of your great gold ring? I am on the hunt for "the gold ring".

I'm a pianist so I cannot wear rings or bracelets. I have to take them off every now and then, so here would be my list.

1. Diamond studs - not too big, not too small. Preferably in platinum or gold settings so I can avoid allergic reactions and wear them anywhere!
2. A simple and classic (preferably a bit small) gold pendant. I think diamond studs are enough of bling bling for my age and style so I would pass on diamond pendants, on daily basis!
3. A decent watch. I am still young and casual, so I really enjoy my Coach watch. The thin strap looks very light and cute.

4. Classic hoops and/or drooping earrings. I am a careless sort of person so I prefer studs on daily basis, but for parties or occasional night-outs, I think these are a must! They still need to be at least silver 'cos of my ears... :( Quite liked some of Tiffany's silvers I saw; Elsa Peretti teardrop ones in particular.
5. An interesting and bolder piece. I have seen some beaded bracelets from Tikah and Etsy. They are not toooo pricy and have the enough bling bling for night outs. Other suggestions would be big pendants or some cool rings...
